I love the "you haven't played competitive sports/there are unwritten rules you need to follow/etc." argument because it means exactly nothing and is a pathetic gatekeeping attempt because you think competitive sports culture is some 5D chess that "normal people" wouldn't understand.

Unwritten rules/codes are unwritten because of one thing: they're stupid

If this is the kind of on-ice response that is acceptable in a sports culture, then the culture is bad, not the ones who criticize it.

They're unwritten so that they can be changed at a moment's notice, usually to defend one side or another in shitty behavior?

In a sport that still allows fighting, the response within that framework is to drop the gloves and start throwing hands. Hitting someone in the head with a stick is not something within the spirit of how NHL hockey is played. Reilly was stupid.

My only criticism of the play is that Rielly should have hit him harder.

When a no-talent scrub like Ridly Greig - - who’s just as useless as his father was - - is showboating and trying to send a message, there has to be a return message sent.

Novice fans new to the game have no concept of physical hockey. So I’m not surprised at how traumatized some people are by the hit.

Are the networks issuing a warning to viewers that the play is disturbing and contains graphic violence before showing the replay?
no talent lmao.. he has plenty of talent and lots of teams would take him in there line up

Morgan is already out $91,500 thanks to the one game suspension. He should donate it to Toronto General for research into mental well-being.

A couple? It's a cross-check straight to the head, outside of play, in the dying seconds of a game, with the intent of payback.

If Perron got 6 games for this Perron suspended six games | NHL.com

then Reilly should get +10. This is way worse than what Perron did, and it's not even close.
I am so curious to see how this is handled.

I think Perron is the clearest reference. A “clean” player seeking retribution against a player who had not actually broken anything in the rule book. The “code” should not factor at all into any incident where a player targets another player’s head with their stick well after the hockey play is over.

If the NHL really wants to throw the book at Reilly—the other hit that I think could be a reference is Scheifele’s hit on Evan’s from the Covid playoffs. That was retribution for an empty net goal too. That got four playoff games (equivalent to 11-12 regular season games if you use the 28:82 game conversion). Scheifele had never been suspended before either.

what's with all the pearl clutching. greig knew exactly what he did and knew what the response would be. this falls under keep your head up. id be surprised if the league did anything.

Bobblehead Bettman is definitely going to mandate a suspension on Rielly.
