That does not justify the response that it got. You as well as Rielly are 100% entitled to not like what Grieg did, thats fine, its not really in question. What is not fine, is the response it elicited.
I'm not saying it is; I've said a few times now that Rielly will miss some games, so stop pretending to hold the moral high ground.

But, as Grieg should know, you may elicit an angry response if you do that bush league BS.

I could see 2 or 3 but if Greig is hurt it's probably more. A vet trying to impress upon a kid to have a bit more respect but he goes over the top with it. Greig likes to get under skins.....a lesson might be learned but it will come from his own teammates or not telling him to knock off or not bothering. Anyway it will suck more for the Leafs.

So you'd be completely fine with someone running up to a defenseless Matthews, and crosschecking him in the head?

Please, this board would shut down if that happened.
I'll put it this way: when he cross-checked Dahlin, I was not pleased, and had he gotten more games, I wouldn't have been surprised, nor would I have protested it.

Also, had some like Tuch or whoever went after him, that wouldn't have been an illogical thing to expect either.

I would wager money that Grieg knew he was going to piss off some leafs, I dont think thats in question, that's literally what he is paid to do. An angry response a cross check to the head. Im all fine with Rielly responding with some emotion, its how he did it that I and others take issue with.

Looks like Pinto is the only one cleaning up. ;)

Well, he achieved his goal; with one smack of a puck, he reignited the battle of Ontario.

It should have been a regular “scrum after the whistle”, not a vicious attack with intent to injure

A guy got speared in his balls and a guy took a tee shot into an empty net today and people are saying getting firey about that is weak?

Its crazy to me, I get the feeling that anything less than a suspension worthy retaliation would have been looked at as soft.

Not sure Benn even got a penalty for injuring Matthews with some cross checks to the lower back, making him a handful of games.

We're you vocal then about suspending Benn?

Strange.

We're you vocal about Marchand deserving a suspension when he tripped Liljigren earlier this season and smashed up his ankle pretty good. The kid missed 2 months of the year.

No?

Hmm.

There always is. People just pretend it’s never happened before.

What is the point you're making? Kesler shot the puck after the final whistle, so not quite the same thing. And you know what didnt happen? A CROSS CHECK TO THE HEAD. If Rielly had done what Wideman did it would have had the same result... Some roughing minors and everything would have been all hunky-dory.

This thread explains so much on here.

Bad Grieg. It's all his fault he got cross checked to his dome.

I think I understand now.
I doubt he'll do it again. He wouldn't have done it if prime Reeves, Chara, Chris Simon were on the ice.

Probably why Zegras isn't showboating anymore.

What’s wrong with shooting a puck into the net when the game’s over? Why did it need a reaction at all?

Generally goons aren’t on the ice when you have an empty net. Honestly. Reeves is a bully and toxic going after smaller players always. The quicker ppl like reeves are out of hockey the better it gets.

That's what is at stake here, really.

The question should be whether Reilly is responsible for a lesser infraction being exacerbated into a more egregious one, or whether he intended to commit the more serious infraction.

From video evidence, it seems likely that the former is correct.

If deemed that way, the punishment will be meted out based on the fact that he is responsible for controlling his stick at all times.

A cross-check to the shoulder wouldn't warrant any supplemental discipline at all, but when it rides to the head, intentional or not, it will be.

So, yes, this is precisely what is at stake.

I anticipate the punishment will be based first and foremost on how long after the whistle it happened, secondly being a predatory hit.

Whether Reilly intentionally or accidentally cross checked Grieg in the head is at best third in the suspension priority checklist.

How long after the whistle never mattered for crosschecks because no player is ever eligible to be cross checked. You’re mistakingly applying hitting rules to cross check rules.

It matters for hits because a player is eligible to be hit for a certain period.

By definition every crosscheck is predatory.

That's what I mean. He was out there playing against the softies so he figured he could get away with it.
