No. When he decided to taunt.

How often do you think taunting happens on the ice?

You think they just put the suspensions and retaliatory penalties aside because sticks and stones are the same as the words that are exchanged?

“He said bad things so I swung my stick at his head.”

“Oh, in that case, sorry about that, no penalty.”

LOL.

At Historica Canada, we just had an emergency meeting to discuss this incident and I'm pleased to report that it will be included as a Canadian Heritage moment.

Does anybody on here remember the Bautista bat flip a few tears back . Texas reacted like a bunch of ass hats saying the code the code the code and you are showing us up blah blah blah ... Suspensions and so on happened . Now bat flipping happens all the time and nobody gives a shit cause it's all part of the entertainment .

This is very much the same thing , Toronto feels they were embarrassed by the play but their real embarrassment is the fact they lost to a rival who is way behind them in the standings . What this has done is take the pressure off the players and coach as the focus is now on the incident and not on the loss .

Personally I found the play of slamming it in the goal entertaining and it has nothing to do with trying to embarrassing anybody . But that is just me .

I feel a 4 game suspension is about right as Rielly is not a dirty stupid player he just did a stupid thing . .

10? For a first time offense?

That's to much
First, second, or third time offense should have nothing to do with the initial suspension.

You should just have games tacked on for being a repeat offender.

10 should be the minimum for shit like this. This is stupid.

It was a taunt.
Are you expecting that I disagree? He taunted the leafs and their fans by putting a slow slapshop into the net. That's what makes it so damn funny.

Slappers in the NHL typically clock in at 70-90 mph. It was a 73 mph shot. To quote Aaron Ward, it was "a total muffin".

Please note that I pulled this quote from Maple Leafs Daily, who were using it to make fun of Greig: Former NHLer makes fun of Ridly Greig over the shocking low speed of his empty-net clapper

This was the most shared and engaged NHL content across all platforms by a substantial margin.
it was shared even on accounts that cover other sports from big NFL accounts to basketball

this type of content drives viewership

Unless the NHL head office is completely stupid (a case can be made for that)
they know about this quantitative data and should be pushing this NHL rivalry content

It happens all the time, but you’re referring to chirping.

This was clearly a case where the Ottawa player was trying to show up the Leafs and get under their skin. I am a big proponent of that stuff and I think the league needs more of it, but if you chose to engage in that, you are going to get a response and very well could get a stick to your head. I’m more than OK with that, too.

We need that emotion in the game.

It's interesting that Friedman didn't mention a more recent and comparable example in Perron.
They did mention Perron, my apologies for not including it. Hard to remember every detail in a 10 minute segment or however long it was.

I believe one might be more of a comparable as Perron has history with Dops.

I’m not too sure though about the other example.

What makes this act selfless?

Would love to know the difference between the two instances. Is it cause he had another teammate near?

Gross hit. Should have been a suspension.

But even that is nowhere near as bad as Reilly because it was during/right after the play.

Reilly had time to walk his dog, make a coffee, and take a pee in the time between the goal and him deciding to hit someone unsuspecting in the head with his stick.

I think people need to realize that Reilly doing this after the goal was scored and the play was over is what is going to ding him. It makes it almost impossible for him to say it was a play that went bad and not retaliation.

It becomes much more cut and dry

This was after the play and resulted in nothing...or is it because it was an american team, specifically the bruins doing it.

Yeah I just heard. Friedman made the argument that it didn't ride up for Perron and it was staright to the head and says Reilly should make that argument but fails to mention Perron did hit the shopulder first and tried to use that argument. The Mangiapane suspension is a very different play, doesn't make sense to use. Firedman completely lookjing past the circumstances around the incident is probably a good reason he is surprised.
