Did you just quote a guy that had been previously suspended for betting related offences, talk about classless...
Longest suspension served this season!

He almost served the same total number of suspended games served last season - 41 to 47. If you remove Pre and Post Season suspensions, he wins 41 - 35

Gross hit. Should have been a suspension.

But even that is nowhere near as bad as Reilly because it was during/right after the play.

Reilly had time to walk his dog, make a coffee, and take a pee in the time between the goal and him deciding to hit someone unsuspecting in the head with his stick.
He literally targeted the head of Simmonds, how the in the god damn f*** can you say Morgan's was worse....

Um, yes I did, as he's Greig's teammate. Did you follow the discussion or did you just feel like taking a jab at Pinto without any context?

This was clearly a case where the Ottawa player was trying to show up the Leafs and get under their skin. I am a big proponent of that stuff and I think the league needs more of it, but if you chose to engage in that, you are going to get a response and very well could get a stick to your head. I’m more than OK with that, too.

We need that emotion in the game.
i can't decide whether this is stupid or condescending. a pro hockey player can't have/express emotions while also not clubbing someone in the head with a weapon to vent his feelings? that's some bull****. emotion adds to competition, not whatever this hell that was.

So let’s say Reilly challenges Greig to a fight and Greig says no. What then? I’m fine with players doing something considered disrespectful but I’m also fine with players retaliating for something they consider disrespectful. If a player wants to risk a suspension I’m fine with that too. Both players made their own beds

Then Grieg comes off as a p***y.

I know an in person hearing can result in a 5 plus game suspension but does it also come with a minimum amount as well?

Like, is it possible theoretically that he gets no games for an in person hearing? I think everyone knows he's getting suspended but I'm just interested in the application of in person hearings.

I find it more likely Reilly did it because he was expected to rather than he couldn't control his emotions.

I can't think of a situation where a player got an in-person hearing and ended up serving no suspension whatsoever.

Ottawa

This was after the play and resulted in nothing...or is it because it was an american team, specifically the bruins doing it.

The league frequently explains that penalties are worse when guys aren’t actively engaged in a confrontation and ready to defend themselves.

Here both guys were engaged and had sticks up from the beginning. In Greig’s case, the play was over, he was skating towards his team to celebrate the win. It’s not remotely similar.

Even then Chara should probably have gotten something.

Does anybody on here remember the Bautista bat flip a few tears back . Texas reacted like a bunch of ass hats saying the code the code the code and you are showing us up blah blah blah ... Suspensions and so on happened . Now bat flipping happens all the time and nobody gives a shit cause it's all part of the entertainment .

This is very much the same thing , Toronto feels they were embarrassed by the play but their real embarrassment is the fact they lost to a rival who is way behind them in the standings . What this has done is take the pressure off the players and coach as the focus is now on the incident and not on the loss .

Personally I found the play of slamming it in the goal entertaining and it has nothing to do with trying to embarrassing anybody . But that is just me .

I feel a 4 game suspension is about right as Rielly is not a dirty stupid player he just did a stupid thing . .
There were no suspensions over the bat flip. It was a playoff game.

Think twice, a 6 gamer in person, reduced to 4 games.

You're both ridiculous. I literally said both sides should listen to it, meaning it was a pretty neutral, balanced opinion piece. Why don't you both give it a listen instead of spouting off nonsense and not contributing positively to anything.
But they said in their piece it's hard to be neutral.. so isn't that a contradiction?

So your argument is because they did it in the past, it should be the same for the present? Is that a hill you want to die on?

Umm yes? Thats literally how they determine suspension lengths - based on precedence. Are you new to hockey?

So first off, I am a Jets fan. Get that out of tue way right now.
All I can say is that if Dillion got 3 games for basically letting a guy skate head first into his shoulder, then Reilly should get 6.
Now do I believe that 6 games is correct??
Hell NO!!
He barely even touches him if we are being honest about it, and it was the dummy who thought it would be a good idea to slap it into the empty net.
I said it before , this league is soft as butter. It hardly resembles NHL hockey now.
We pay big big dollars to go watch these games and I don’t think it’s too much to ask for these guys to go play hard and throw some hits.
Head shots out of tue game? Fine, I’m down with that. But make a hard and fast rule on it.
Hit in tue head? Automatic 1 game. But DOPS can’t even do that right.

So..6 games for Reilly and 3 for Dillion is fair….. I guess.

The problem is there's zero consistency so you can pick and choose whatever play you want to serve as a benchmark.

Gallagher's five games make six for Rielly absurd. He didn't even get an in-person hearing for the most blatant elbow I've seen in years. Then you've got shit like Trouba taking a fine for baseball swinging his stick into a guy's head. Or other crosschecks to the neck (and many other dangerous plays) that they simply ignore all-together. Hell there was that weekend earlier this year where I think three guys were injured being boarded from behind, and not all of them were even penalties.

There's no point in even bringing up previous suspensions because the league will always find a way to surprise you.

The Big Smoke (unfortunately)
Paraphrasing cause I didn't write anything down of course as I listened to it on a walk but more or less:

- Friedman agreed that Rielly went too far - referenced a past example where Rielly fought Morrissey over a hit on Robertson which would have been a better response with Greig, shouldn't have lost his cool on Saturday.
- Friedman agreed Rielly should be suspended, but thought it would be in the range of 2-4 games and was surprised by the in person based on past examples. Referenced Lizotte and Magiapanne suspensions, also Matthews getting two because it didn't ride up on Dahlin and was straight to the head.
- Friedman and Marek both stated that this is all a case of tribalism - if it was reversed and it was Robertson or Knies that did what Greig did, Tkachuk would have responded and Sens fans would want him to. Similarly, if it was reversed, Leafs fans would be mad at the Sens for responding.
- Similar to the above, Sens fans calling Leafs fans out cause it was 'just an empty net' would have the opposite opinion if it was reversed. Again, all an example of tribalism in sports. Both sides are being ridiculous kind of opinion.
- Referenced past players including Marc Methot who said what Greig did was a no-no and that Rielly should have responded, but went too far.
- Mentioned how the Leafs are always called soft with no pushback/response and if the Leafs didn't do anything they'd be ripped (again, went too far), and Leafs fans will like that he had pride to do something. Again mentioned Sens fans would be happy if Tkachuk did the same.
- Hard for people to be measured/neutral with their opinions (case and point this thread).
- Referenced the Giroux interview post-game and how he didn't say much about it either way. Mentione how they believe he didn't like what Greig did and understood why Rielly did something in response, but obviously didn't like the severity of it. Referenced him learning under Pronger who would have done something way worse than Rielly did.
- This puts the Leafs in an awful position being without Rielly for a prolonged period of time.
- Mentioned examples of in person hearings getting less than 6 - Kulikov and John Moore, and Spezza.
- Reignites the Leafs/Sens rivalry which is good for the league.

Probably missing some stuff but that was the crux of it off the top of my head. Recommend listening.
Appreciate the summary!

Once again you’re adding something that didn’t happen. There was no clubbing on the head. Rielly was engaging him, as he should, and his stick caugh him in the neck and jaw.

I have no problem with either player’s actions.

Yes, emotion adds to competition.

If he missed the net because of that, they would have non stop chirped him and play would have continued. Just mad that it went into an empty net.
