Proposal is bad. Add suzuki and your GM would send you to montreal in exchange.
These don’t travel well. Someone proposed Price at $2mm retained for Brochard, 1st, Savoie and more. It was an insane proposal. Some Habs fans believe Price holds huge value when his contract is so definitively negative it’s more sad than amusing. The Oil giving Habs a few major assets to acquire Price at $8.5mm was a cosmically bad hot take. Adding Suzuki doesn’t even take the stink off it. You still have to suffer the brutal overpay on Price as he ages and works out his other major off ice issues as well as his lousy regular season stats. Edmonton would have to unload guys like Drai and RNH just to make the cap work.

You pretty much perfectly summed up my take on this.

Edmonton needs a goalie.... Are they willing to risk it????

Mtl: Price (2M retain)
Kulak (900K Retain)
2nd 2022
Total CAP is 9.6 M or so

Edm : Koskinen (4.5M)
Turris (1.65 M)
Bouchard (850K)
Lavoie (Minor)
1st 2022 or 2023 (top 10 Protected)
+Cap space is 1.8M

Cap is not perfect but it's a starting point... Price still on the sideline for a month or so might get the numbers to be good.

Any trade revolving around Price and Evan Bouchard is an instant no. I wouldn't take Price for free through.

There are atleast 10 teams in the playoff picture that would love to add a guy like Chiarot. Something about supply and demand etc etc. Teams looking to get over the hump include the avs, leafs and oilers. Minny and Washington being wild cards as well.

On the flip side, there appears to be a higher-than-average amount of veteran D on expiring contracts/bad teams this year - Giordano - Leddy - Oleksiak - Subban - Letang - Boychuk - Stralman - De Haan- Etc.

So where teams see Chariot on a very deep list could affect his price, as he may or may not be the big fish this year

Giordano and Chiarot: Both can provide physical play and are proven trusted top 4D. Chiarot can be acquired in a sign/trade situation though cause add 3 years and you get him from 30-33 which would be a good move. I think teams that are after Chiarot are thinking beyond this playoff run. That's how I see the Habs getting their 1st

Oleksiak:
He is not on an expiring contract

Letang: Hard to move with his cap hit and not sure if the Pens will move him at this deadline

Leddy: Decent add but not a physical type that is strong in his own end. He does help puck moving though

Stralman & DeHaan: Depth move types

Boychuk: He hasn't played a NHL game since 19/20 bud.

Others? I'm sure other names might pop up. Similar to Giordano and Chiarot? Not sure

In anyways, I think that Mtl and Edmonton make a lot of senses, as far as trading partners goes.

Edmonton will need depth (a whole lot of it), if they want to get serious in the playoffs, and that's all we have.

Guys like Toffoli or Hoffman, Chiarot or Edmunson (or Petry?), Price or Allen, would improve Edmonton a lot I think.

We would have to get paid of course, because we're not in the charity business, but I think trades could be made between them

What about Jake Allen? What would the Oil pay for him?

Probably not much. I see him about on par with Koskinen.

IMO the Montreal guys we should be sniffing around should be the likes of Armia, Lekhonen, Evans, Perrault, etc. What's sinking this team at the moment is our bottom six is laughable.

It would be a good approach by the Oilers... Overall depth does matter in the playoffs. You are smart to realize that.

* Armia comes with term and is meh this year. Ability is still there but we are not retaining to move him. So I think this falls through
* Lehkonen is a great skater and has a very solid 200' game and forecheck. He has 1 more RFA year left after this year I believe and I can see us getting a few calls on him. I think Habs management will hold onto him unless we get a offer we can't refuse.
* Evans is not going anywhere. We need him in our center depth and that contract he just signed is very good for what you get.
* Perrault could be had for cheap I would imagine

As far as Chiarot, I said it before and will say it again. I think teams that are in on him are thinking past this year. Habs might get their 1st if he comes with an agreed extension. Extending him for 3 years gets him for 4 playoff runs and from age 30-33. That's solid value if you can get him to agree on an AAV

I dont think he is worth a first right now but a lot can change in a hurry . Saying he for sure will not get a 1st is nearsighted . I can see it if a team is desperate enough . If they are on the playoff bubble and have a ton riding on the season with high expectations , I can see a team being desperate enough. Is his value a first? Not really but in is whatever the market is willing to spend.

Every year at the trade deadline I go "how the *F* did that player go for so much? And THAT other guy go for so little?"

Back to the OP, you might find a team willing to give a first for Chiarot, but I sure as hell hope it’s not the Oilers. We’re not 1 Ben Chiarot away from winning the cup.

I get the David Savard comparisons from last year, but he was a RD and Tampa was one David Savard away from the cup.

Evans and Lekh are not available. Allen is far more valuable than Koskinen. Try again.

Most insiders seem to think Chiarot will return a 1st. He’s even the number 1 target on TSN’s trade board. Nothing is assured but that’s the chatter.
Will Edmonton step up to pay that price? No idea.

I'm curious. Is there a single Edmonton fan that wants Chiarot for a protected 1st?

I'm curious, if the Oilers do make that move or another team does, I wonder if the entire fan base will revolt or will some try to say it was a good move (after the trade)?

I think the 1st could be in play but in a sign/trade where the new team gets him on a 3 year extension. I stand firm that teams that are in on Chiarot are thinking past this playoff run.

With no extension? My price has been stable at two 2nd's. This was before and after LeBrun said what he said. But lets not forget, LeBrun said he talked to a few teams and they said Chiarot was a target and a 1st is a possibility. This is not out of thin air where only some Habs fans are pushing for it.

The better question is this... Would the Oilers or any other team pay the 1st if Chiarot plays nice on a 3 year extension? Sign/Trade? Why is there not much talk on this type of trade? :dunno:

Don't think we need to take on Turris or retain on Chiarot to get a 1st pick back, certainly not both.
Ideally I'd take a bad contract back for Chiarot, possibly Turris if we're dealing with Edmonton. I'd keep the retain salary slot for other contracts if possible.

I have yet to see one. Some have some minor interest in Chiarot, but not at that price.

Well what we say here has no impact on what ends up happening, but I think he's worth the price personally.

I could see the Oilers focusing more on improving their goaltending though.

Either way, I think if he goes to a playoff team they'll be happy.

We will see about that. If Chiarot do get a first would you admit you are wrong.

Outside a condition such as a 2nd becomes a 1st if team makes conference finals thus picking 29-32, or Montreal is taking back a dump, he’s not getting a 1st. He is not good enough.

In reality sign and trades are pretty uncommon. We like to talk about them as an option here but you don’t really see them happen very often.

I wish people would stop talking like they actually know what the situation is.

It’s just called common sense. You do not retain long term on a player like Carey Price. Someone will take him at full hit and Montreal will keep the retention slot AND cap flexibility.

Hahahaha. That’s a good one.

Habs add Suzuki to this and Edmonton still says No way.

That whole package doesn’t even come close to getting you Suzuki

I think they would consider retaining 2 mil on Price with the right return.
Remember we won't be contending for at least till the end of Price's contract if we go full rebuild [ which i hope we do] so retaining doesn't hurt us.

Yes it does in year 3-4-5. Just look at Toronto’s issues with the cap from the past 3-4 years and tell me they wouldn’t take that Kessel retention back. It’s unnecessary and stupid

Just look at what a late first get you from the past 10 trade deadlines. He's certainly good enough and the team getting him will be happy.
