Better to beat up on the bad teams than to not beat up on them. If this just the end result of the soft part of the schedule, the Mets will be brought back down earth very soon sand very quickly.

Yup...you have to beat the crap ass teams that are on your schedule. And no doubt they can't continue winning at the .700 or so clip they have been on past 3 weeks. So yes your right, Mets will come down to earth. But let's keep in mind, they can come down to earth, play .500 or so ball the next 4-5 weeks vs this tough competition they have coming up and they'll still be right in the mix.

All Mets have done is get themselves back onto the dance floor after looking like they were going to be not even invited for the 4th straight year. Well they are now going to play meaningful baseball games for the foreseeable future and very likely into September as well. So for all of success starved Met fans like me and the rest of my brothers in Metland...that's about all we could ask for now.

Was looking at Mets upcoming schedule just now and tho a bit daunting, when you have pitching as good as the Mets do, it gives you a bit more confidence that you can get thru it.

Here's way I look at it: Mets have basically 50 games left in the season(49 to be exact). They currently have a 57-56 record. I'm thinking 85 wins tops gets you a WC spot this year which is due to all the parity in the NL this year. I even think 83 wins could get you the 2nd WC spot.

But let's say we use 85 wins as the magic # to get a WC spot which is reasonable, that would mean the Mets would need to go 28-21 the rest of the way. That my friends is doable and not an unreasonable pace in my estimation as no one is running away with this thing including the Mets.

a few weeks ago the mets were only 5 out in the wild card but had to jump like 9 teams as florida was the only team behind them...depending on the outcome of the late games, the mets have leaped over 6 of those teams. making up 5 games was always doable...never thought that jumping over that many teams was possible

the one thing I will never understand is yankees fans that feel the need to go out of their way to shit on the mets when anything happens? why? if I was a yankees fan I wouldn't give 2 shits about the mets or what they were doing. the other way around is stupid too but atleast you can understand that its the little brother complex. but its baffles my mind why you guys care in the least what the mets do

Hence why when a team...any team goes on a 17 W's in 23 games type of streak as Mets are currently, considering most teams in WC hunt are playing around .500 or so give or take a game or two, yeah you can pass alot of teams along the way.

Heck wasn't it just 2 weeks ago the Nationals who were on a similar streak as Mets are on maybe even better finally cooled off as they came back from the dead as well and now are in a WC spot?

Alot of parity this year which has both kept the Mets in the hunt despite their horrible losses most of the year and yet has given the Mets life as well. We'll see how this plays out but at least we have important baseball games in August and September to look forward too. Which reminds me...Mets need to win at least one of these next two games vs Marlins...so no resting on laurels here...keep on keeping on....

The bullpen has finally started to pitch well. Even with Diaz still struggling and Familia figuring things out, they have a few arms out there that are getting the job done. Wilson has come in and pitched as well as you can expect, Lugo is a beast, and Avilan has done well. Gsellman is always off or on.

If Diaz and Familia can't find it, they have some options to help, but those guys have to figure it out.

Hubbs has been a bit over the top lately with the Yankees, but this is a valid point.

I get that the point is the Mets have played bad teams, but it's such a non-intuitive statistic. Obviously four teams have a lot more losses than a single team. You basically have to add in the Yankees' losses and divide by four to have a number that means anything.

Yankees fan here . Have to agree with this. Mets fans are starving for this. Good for them. Especially with the Yankees cruising towards a division win it’s nice to watch the Mets story unfold this year.

Youre right lets not talk baseball in a baseball thread on a message forum on the internet...

All I did was state the obvious. They have beaten one team that is legit playoff contender during this streak. One team. And that team has its warts with the pitching staff.

Its not to shit on the Mets, its to bring a bit of reality to the current state of the team. I think its great when the Mets are good. Its good for NY. Good for NY baseball. Just before I buy into the hype I want to see how they do against some quality teams.

Yeah but I'm a Yankees fan and I agree with @Greg02 .. that's a stupid tweet.. saying 4 teams combined have more losses than the Yankees do?

That's shocking...just shocking ..also 20 teams combined have like 1000 more losses than the Yankees...omg!

The tweet was one thing, which was still in itself accurate, but my response was to the original points I brought about the hype building around the Mets which i think is significantly jumping the gun considering who they have played.

My take is that you can't hate on the Yanks for losing to bad teams and then hate on the Mets for beating them. Here are some additional facts.

The Mets have 31 of 48 games left at home and they have been a good home team.
The Nats and Phillies played the Marlins the same # of times as the Mets (Phillies have a losing record). Imagine if the Yanks didn't lose 7 games to the Os in 2017.
St Louis and Milwaukee have their own punching bag to beat up on.

So basically they are all in about the same boat. But imagine if the Mets got to this position after losing 9 of 10 instead of winning 9 of 10.

theyve done what they had to do. get hot against weaker teams. they need to keep this going and beat some better teams now.

this is fun. im going to enjoy it until they lose 10 of 11 and bring me back down to that dark place i was in not that long ago.

Don't worry, soon the Jets will take over and then the Rangers. At least the Knicks won't be good enough to provide hope.

IDK how anyone could accuse Mets fans of "getting ahead of themselves" or anything like that. Read the posts here, go to Amazin' Avenue, MetsBlog, wherever. Pretty much every post ends with, "This is so much fun until [something cataclysmic happens] and we're back to normal." Mets fans are some of the least likely fans in sports to get ahead of themselves given we've seen so many collapses before and that part of us being "Amazin'" is that we do some impressively awful stuff, as well.

I texted my old man last night (who was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan when he was little, until they moved, and has been a Mets fan ever since 1962). He's seen some stuff. His response to my semi-optimistic text: "Starting pitching has settled in, b-pen has improved slightly. They have some bats so anything is possible. Concerns- Cano was heating up and they have a bunch of guys hitting below .200 (talking about Guillorme, Altherr, etc.--he doesn't understand they're emergency backups). Not much bench. And then they have terrible defense and baserunning. So it will probably all fall apart." He's been watching the team for 57 years now or whatever it is. He knows what's up. You grow up a Mets fan, and you just know the wheels are about to fall off at any moment. There's no getting ahead of yourself as a Mets fan.

That is, unless you want to listen to WFAN or something. But the people that call in there seem to constantly be in a battle to be the biggest dick on the radio waves at any given moment. They're not representative of anything.

Yes, because Met fans on this site are historically unrealistic. It’s not like we’re completely unaware of our history.
