Easy answer for me: Sign Cole and resign Torres when the time comes, either buying out some of his arbitration years or when he becomes a FA at age 28 (2025). Keep Judge until he becomes a FA (at age 31! - 2023) or trade at deadline 2022.
Look at what Betts got in arbitration. What do you think Judge is going to get? Cole is going to cash in and set a record for pitchers. The Yankees are not going to be in a position to pay Stanton, Cole, Torres & Judge. When the time comes, Torres may well cost $300. That is what it is going to take to buy out his arbitration years. Meanwhile, there is no getting rid of Judge. Not at 31. His value to the franchise is much more that he may even get. You are going to wind up paying him in some fashion, also to the tune of around what Stanton costs per year.

Andujar to 1st would make a lot of sense. He and Voit can platoon there an at DH.

Torres and LeMahieu up the middle

Stanton-Hicks-Judge in the outfield is set

I'd move on from Sanchez and look to trade him for a good young starching pitcher.

Sign Cole

The Stanton move gets worse and worse by the day. He is easily the least valuable of those four players and it's not close. Cashman showed absolutely no foresight making that trade. It's probably impossible but I would be doing everything in my power to unload him.

Not sure about the long-term viability of any of the former AAAA player pickups – if even one of Urshela/Voit/Tauchman remains viable long-term, that'll be a win – but other than that, this makes sense, IMO.

Sorry, but that is viewing as things unfolded with the benefit of hingsight. Everyone said that the Stanton deal was a steal and one that for the price, Cashman could not say no to.

I'm not everyone. I never thought acquiring Stanton was good move. Another right handed slugger wasn't a need. Cashman should have been addressing team weaknesses instead of doubling and tripling down on strengths.

I know that. But still does not dress the fact that the move was lauded basically universally by fans and pundits.

Well it's not like they can't fit good players down the road. Stanton could be moved. Judge can be traded before he hits free agency. There are options.
Trading Judge is not really an option. Not now and not when he is 31. That is not happening. Not with what he is worth to the franchise. So that is unrealistic.

Trading Stanton is possible, but the market for him it minute due to the salary. And those two teams or so, need to have a need in the outfield. Red Sox and LA is out. So where are you trading him?

And again, remember that Cole is 29, just threw the best season by far and is bound to have a regression. Signing such pitchers to 7 or 8 year deals that take them to 37 or so years old is generally not a fantastic idea these days. You will be paying him for what he has done and not likely to do again. I would much rather go forward with Torres and Judge.

What would be your plan? (not trying to be aggressive or facetious)

Houston's response was shitty. They should have just said, "He was supporting our player, but did so in an inconsiderate and insensitive manner. We apologize for the situation in general and to the affected reporters specifically, and will make sure all of our employees receive sensitivity training moving forward to avoid these types of incidents." And then be done with it.

I seriously doubt, however, that the guy realized what he was doing, or did it intentionally. Probably just some meathead without a clue. Doesn't excuse it. I just don't think it was malicious.

I get it. I know you are not the type.

My biggest plan would be to develop our own. Sevy is supposed to be the ace. He was supposed to be our #1. I would also look at someone like Wheeler and continue to strengthen the bullpen.

I think that's fair. Wheeler would be a decent depth addition, similar to Paxton last year. I agree they need to continue to develop their own guys but that will take years.

I'm hopeful that by moving a position player or two they can find a 25-26 year old #3 from someone.

Then maybe Cashman will be the only Yankees GM in history to have two consecutive decades where the team doesn't make the World Series. Damn lucky to have him and Hal, we Yankees fans are.

Giving Judge a long term deal at 31 will be disastrous for the franchise if he continues to show that he doesn't have the skill of staying healthy which he hasn't done throughout his career.

Betts got what, 10 million in arb. That was after 2 top ten MVP seasons (2nd, 6th) and two consecutive GG awards. At the time he only had missed 14 days to a concussion injure and then they signed a one year deal at 20 mil after he won the MVP award. Of course Aaron Judge has the one top ten MVP finish (2nd) and the ROY in same year and no GG. For some reason, these things count in arbitration. Big difference is Judge has missed 131 days due to injury.

I know you are just touting the economic reality that the Yankees brain trust has DECIDED THEMSELVES to work under. While it does mean we'll just have to accept it, it doesn't mean us fans have to happy about it. This era is feeling very much like the 80s era that a grew up on where the Yanks had the most wins of any MLB team during the decade but didn't have any world series wins to show for it.
