I mean, what did this team need? They just broke the HR record. Didn't need more of those.

They've added some pitching, although I would like them to add more.

I know we hate contact hitters in this thread but they sort of needed a DJ LaMahieu. Ian Kinsler is around a 90 wRC+ at this point, but I remember the Red Sox being geniuses for doing that.

The splits are a legitimate concern, but lots of guys have crazy splits. He's a punch and judy hitter, I can't imagine the air pressure was having that much of an effect. He should be able to hit at Yankee Stadium.

And he can field, which is only important in here when we're ****ting on Andujar.

When Tulowitski gets hurt, we have a good player ready to step in. If we hit on the 1 in 69,000 chance that Tulowitski stays healthy, then we have Troy Tulowitski - who's complaining?

And literally everybody I just mentioned is better than Greg Bird, so there's that.

Come on, lol

Machado would bring elite defense at 3B, and be a 35-40 home run and 100 RBI hitter here.

Harper would bring elite OBP skills, and the potential to hit 40-50 home runs a year with his lefty bat at YS

Also, expecting Tulo to become the Tulo from his rockies days is extremely unrealistic.

We already have four starting outfielders. Harper was literally never an option.

Machado is an excellent defender and an excellent contact hitter. Is that what you're paying him $300m for? No, you're paying him that to hit for power, which is something we already do well (better than any team in history) are already paying Stanton obscene money for, and will be paying Judge obscene money for.

Everyone is disappointed that the Red Sox were better than us and won another title, so they want Harper/Machado to feel like we're doing something, even though neither of them really ever fit into our team.

If the Yankees needed a huge splash, it would have been in the pitching staff. I don't know if I would consider Paxton a huge splash and again, I'd like to see another move or two there.

Our competition is Houston and Boston. What big splashes and major improvements have they made?

He annoys me but he's an MLB outfielder.

We have four outfielders, one of whom will be a professional DH, and a 3B who should be a professional DH. Where was Harper going?
My previous post must have given you some hint I'm going to answer Brett Gardner's spot.

I heard it mentioned elsewhere that history has dictated that a players split away from Coors Field hasn't necessarily correlated to how well they've performed after leaving the team. Hopefully that rings true in this case

No ones knows what Machado's contract offers, but even then, he's worth the money. Elite defense at 3B and hitting. Please tell me you're kidding with him not fitting into the team?

That argument makes more sense with Harper if anything, and even then, you'd find way to fit him in if he wanted to come here.

Inexcusable if the Yankees don't end up signing one of them (not saying both).

He doesn't fit into the team. His strengths are the team's strengths.

It would be stupid for the Penguins to spend huge on a UFA center. It would be stupid for the Predators to spend huge on UFA defense. It would be stupid for the Yankees to spend huge on power hitters.

I would have been fine with Machado because he has strengths besides power hitting and we can sort of use a 3B (sort of), but I'm not losing sleep over him.

Harper was a non-starter. He only plays outfield and only hits for power. Again, that's like the Pens spending league max on an offensive center.

I heard a rumor of Harper to Phillies and will be cover on mlb the show.

Edit: Being on the show is old news but they waited to see what team he'd be on.

Machado's defense at 3rd would've been a tremendous help to the team and pitching staff while also allowing you to explore different trade possibilities involving Andujar to continue improving the pitching. The fact he has power and a better bat than Andujar while only being a few years older is a bonus.

Bad Stanton trade is bad.

If they were so concerned about huge contracts, they shouldn't of traded for Stanton. Doesn't make the actual trade itself bad, just their reasoning now. Bad Judge draft pick is bad has about the same logic. Stanton makes close to Ellsbury in the AAV department after the Marlins threw in 30M so not really going to buy into his deal hamstringing the Yankees.

We are the Arsenal of MLB.

Want to sign a defensive midfielder? SureS let's get Kim Kallstrom on loan.

Lol

You created the luxury tax.

The Yankees routinely spent 60-70m more than the 2nd highest team. Up until 2013-14 it was 40m. In 2005, the Yankees payroll was 100m MORE than the Mets, who were 3rd highest.

I don't have any problem with teams spending. But please, let's stop the tortured fanbase angle here. It's ridiculous.

Lol, Judge isn't getting paid big bucks for another 4 years.

Gimme a break....

Could have just not signed CC, Gardner and DJ if that was your main concern..

I'm dreading what will happen once Severino, Judge, Torres, Andujar and co want big contracts..
Betts got $10.5 and $20 million in his 1st and 2nd year of eligibility which for Judge starts the 2020 season. My guess is $40+ million total for those 2 years for Judge.

I dont want to hear it with the money. CC and Gardner are gona after this season. Ellsbury in 2 years. Tanaka in 2-3. They will have money to make things work. But the bottom line is they havent won anything this decade. The Red Sox have won three times now? Stop with the nonsense. Your young players are in the prime of their careers. You go all in.

Been saying this for the past couple weeks although not with the intention to “restock”. Youre not trading Andujar to get prospects. He is 23....

I think those prospects would go for Kluber.

CC and Gardner should have never been re-signed. CC at this point is a long-man/spot starter and Gardner is a backup outfielder. That’s over 16 million off the books. You don’t sign Tulo, that’s about $17 million. LeMahieu is another $12, so that’s $29 million right there.

The Yankees have a “crowded” outfield, but use Statnton as a DH. Ok, so if Harper doesn’t fit, you could have taken $29 million and change and spent it on Machado, who would not only improve the lineup, but the infield defensively. This would allow you to trade Andujar to San Diego and take those prospects and deal them for Kluber.

What would you rather have? Machado and Kluber, a stud 3B and an Ace, or... CC, Gardner, LeMahieu and Tulo, a 5th starter who should be a long-man/spot starter, a backup outfielder, a quality 2B that’s going to be used as a super utility guy and a broken down SS that can’t stay healthy?

I’m taking the former and not even thinking twice about it, because the former is what the team needs more than the latter.

Nah, f*** restocking.

If we trade some sort of package, it should be for a big splash right now.

I'm totally on board with the notion that we've been getting beat up this millennium and we absolutely need to go all in. All I'm saying is, Machado isn't really addressing why we didn't win the World Series. He's simply making our strengths bigger in the hope that we can overcome the same weaknesses.

A big splash I'd be interested in is a trade for a legit, bonafide ace.

As for LaMahieu, they need to makes moves and they did make a move. It was a good one. They don't all have to be huge.

Those guys are going to be locked up by the Yankees, don't worry about that.

Locking up those guys is exactly why they're not shelling out dollars now. (On things they don't really need)

I'd be much more upset if we were losing an arms race to Houston and Boston.

Neither of them showed interest in Harper. Neither of them showed interest in Machado.

They've done precisely f*** all this winter.

What about the teams getting Harper/Machado? Chicago? L f***ing OL. LA? They've been making the splashes all along and still can't compete with the AL. Philly? That gets them to the bowl, but they're still the smallest dog there. Brewers aren't interested.

Our real competition isn't pursuing these guys.

Now, I totally agree with the idea that those teams are already better (particularly Boston) and the ball is our court to improve. Machado is not prerequisite to improve.
