I like the move, but are they just really down on McNeil or what? Like 2B/3B is probably his thing and then they add Lowrie and Cano with Frazier already there, and Davis in the mix. I thought they'd let McNeil start at 2B and then address other areas.

Also, bringing in Luis Avilan could be a sneaky-good move for a team that needs LHPs in the pen. I can absolutely see him making the roster and doing well.

Brodie has done a terrific job adding depth to the MLB and AAA clubs and I feel like he's probably got at least one move left in him. Obviously the Cano thing is the one that has the potential to quickly define him, but in general I think he's done an excellent job. I'm really excited to see if he takes a more aggressive, upside-oriented approach to the draft now. I feel like he will. He doesn't seem like he'd be content to draft a bunch of college relievers like the previous regime.

Alonso is 24 and has nothing left to prove in the minors. 1B should be 100% his unless he is a disaster in ST. BVW has essentially said so himself. With the investment in Cano, he's obviously the starting 2B. Rosario probably penciled in at SS, Lowrie hasn't seen regular time there since 2014. That leaves Frazier and McNeil as the odd men out--do we try to move one of them before opening day? McNeil is the better player, who would be interested in taking Frazier off our hands and what would he reasonably fetch?

The Mets will be contending for that division that’s for sure. Sign Ottavino and you’re set.

1. Brandon Nimmo (RF)
2. Jed Lowrie (3B)
3. Robinson Cano (2B)
4. Wilson Ramos (C)
5. Michael Conforto (LF)
6. Todd Frazier (1B)
7. Amed Rosario (SS)
8. Keon Broxton (CF)

Bench:
JD Davis
Yuan Lagaras

Love almost every move BVW has made this off-season. Lowrie is a crazy good and unexpected move. McNeil had an inflated BABIP last year, so I think it's very smart to let him be the supersub in the IF (and maybe one of the corner OF spots if Broxton/Lagares aren't playing CF). Cano and Lowrie are old so it's good to have a mid-20s possible stud there to give them time off. All of the new additions could feasibly put up 3+ wins on offense in a lineup that was bereft of dangerous hitting last year.

For the first time this decade it feels like the Mets have really legitimate depth everywhere except the rotation, and the healthy starting lineup has only 2-3 question marks.

1b- Alonso (McNeil, Frasier)--
2B- Cano (McNeil, Lowrie)---
SS- Amed (not too much depth here but hopefully we see a healthy breakout season for the sub-23 y/o Rosario)
3B- Lowrie (JD Davis, Cano, Frasier)
C- Ramos (not too much depth here either, and i'd love if they could grab Maldonado in case Ramos and Travis are dead at the same time)

The OF is nasty too with Nimmo/Conforto and a defensive stud in CF with Broxton/Lagares.

So now that Grandal has signed for one year, $18.5M, do you think he regrets turning down the offer from the Mets of four years, $60M? I like Grandal a lot but I'm actually glad how it worked out.

McNeil
D’Arnaud
Cespedes by years end

Lowrie has the 3rd highest WAR among 2B since last year behind only Ramirez (who is 3B now) and Altuve. He also hits an absolute ton of doubles and has a great eye.

The contracts this offseason don't make sense. Grandal/Lowrie get real cheap one year deals (in Lowrie's case obviously he's older and wasn't going to get many years). Ramos gets a cheap deal for two years. Harper/Machado don't even have a huge market. There's just so much value out there and Brodie is doing a great job at picking it up. That said the fact that's he's able to do this does make you question the Cano deal a bit more...would seem pretty likely he could have signed Kimbrel for less money than Cano is getting and then just signed something like Dozier and Lowrie instead of Cano.

Agree with all of this, but didn't Lowrie get 2/20? Or did I miss an option or something?

Only thing I can think of with Cano is he thought that deal would move the needle the most, and he also may have wanted to make a splash. The latter element is silly but it does count for something here.

Just dont understand it. I really dont. Why even sign LeMahieu?? He is an everyday 2B. We have Torres. Andujar at 3B. I just dont understand this move at all.

Wonder if something last minute turned them off of Machado? Just doesn't make sense. This is hardly a guy that will put them over the top

It's just like the Lowrie signing for the Mets although he's younger but not quite as good. He's a useful player who can play multiple positions. He provides nice flexibility and definitely strengthens the teams depth.

Although I will say, having a guy that's a career .300 hitter and gets on base 35% of the time can't hurt...

*In Coors Field. He's a career .330/.387/.445 in Coors and .264/.311/.362 outside.
