Matthews is such a chameleon though. Often times he's this all world sniper, other times he's dogged on the backcheck and turning over pucks like a Selke guy, blocking shots for fun. Occasionally he'll make a Mario Lemieux impossible set up, but then on routine plays he just makes these awkward touch passes that don't set up any kind of clean look for anybody. For a guy who can play the game any way you want with all the tools in the world, there's just as good a chance he just blends back into the wallpaper.

Also, his partnership with Mitch can be so stale. Completely neuters his rush game.
My issue with Matthews nowadays is when he came into the league, he would physically dominate opponents... But now he plays the way Alex Ovechkin does (going to prime scoring position and then waiting for someone else to set him up), except there's a reason Ovie plays that way now; he's lost his speed. Matthews hasn't. And anymore, if no one's setting him up, he just looks like complete shit.

I prefer Marner AND Nylander away from Matthews because I find that both of them think when they're playing with Matthews their jobs are "set up Matthews"...

Been saying since the North Division, AM and MM plays off each other too much, when pucks were going in, it was fun to watch but when the team was losing and pucks were getting stop, it was terrible. MM won't even look at the goalie when he was on odd man rushes or scoring chances bc he was constantly thinking about setting up AM. And AM would go to his spot and just wait for MM to feed him.

Thats why Willie seems to be less dominant when he plays with AM.

Willie is at his best when he plays with guys who can rush with him while he is dictating plays.

MM is at his best when he gets room to skate and someone digging pucks for him.

AM is at his best when he knows he needs to do everything but physical plays.

I would even try putting Bert and Knies with AM and see if they can become Legion of Doom 2.0.

Let JT plays with MM and Calle and have a rush line with Holmberg-Domi and Willie.

What's up with the mods deleting perfectly polite posts?

:D

If you could mature Mitch by banning my sh*t, I'd be all for it.

I merely point out to Mitch playing like a moron, I'm not causing it...

It's so odd too. You hear people get upset about the constant mentioning of delay of game penalties, that they lie and make up what year it happened. A certain user said it happened 5 years ago when it was 3 years ago.
I guess we know where Marner's low smartness level comes from in the playoffs.

He shouldn't be allowed to answer questions. His quotes along with his playoffs are both bad. Ironic Mitch is sticking up for someone with a bad playoffs.
Oops more Mitch displeasure by me;)

What’s wrong with this quote? It was true. Justin Holl was the town whipping boy. He had moments of being bad, but it’s not his fault the coach played him 18 minutes a night.

This 18 wheeler is picking up steam
Let's hope it can negotiate the big left turn coming this week
If not the new president might have a few more millionaires for his golf tour

“I thought Mitchell Marner was excellent here tonight”

Agreed Sheldon, I don’t know what people watch, but it denotes a real lack of sophistication in their “analysis”. It’s why I always marvel at the disconnect between the pros, former coaches, league voters and some of the fan base here. Yes playoffs, also quite good last night. Some critics here do bring up valid critiques, but a lot of what I read is just lazy. Like last night for example…

Most people can discern valid criticism and accept it. Rage farmers are either malicious or suffer from the Dunning Krugar effect. Not sure which one people would prefer to be seen as.

You remember that CBC mini documentary about young Mitch blowing it in a big game and mean Paul Marner's giving it to him for not skating and missing the net? It's kind of crazy how that one little scene seems to have set the entire pattern of his pro career and relationship with the fanbase.

Mitch is a fun lovin kid who tries his hardest every game .. he is not gonna fix his stride now so it doesn't matter anymore .. he is who he is .. bottom line now he needs a big fast tough winger on his wing who can create open ice for him in playoffs .. and he needs a snipper who can find back of net .. JT is fine as a snipper .. and I think Bert in playoff mode can help Mitch create open ice too .. we need 2 lines in playoffs who can tilt da ice .. Knies and Bert will be fine as options if both play a tough forechecking game

Bolded is the important part, just enjoy the player for what he is not what you wish he was or some made up garbage about his teeth or how he comes across in an interview.

I've been pondering Marner's up and down play this year and his outburst in the media last playoffs and am starting to suspect Mitch is the kind of person to hold a grudge against Keefe for sitting him out of game 82 when his 100th point was on the line. Keefe said at the time it was to protect Marner and Matthews health for game 1 but I seriously think that ticked Marner off inside and he wanted the chance to get him self into the exclusive 100 point club. Cap or possible?

I believe it I would be pissed about it he has all right he played nylander the last game to score his 40th without that game he’d be a 30 goal scorer so marners has all right

Good point forgot about that. Marner may actually be passive aggressively getting back at Keefe this year by not going full throttle. Everyone keeps pointing to his marriage this off season but I think it goes deeper than that. Mitch is that type of person.

I thought the Marner haters believe he and Matthews make the lines and basically run the team through Shanahan?

I'm not a Marner hater. I secretly root for the guy harder than the others because we're from the same area. Not sure if that's what you were saying but yeah some posters float that stuff. I'm just pointing to Keefe maybe making a mistake in resting him when that 100th point means alot to Marner and his legacy. Not sure who is at fault if that is the case. Marner for wanting individual stats or Keefe for not reading the room and pleasing his stars.

I’m not a Marner fan personally, but not giving him the chance to get 100pts is a bit of a di$k move. Can’t blame Marner for wanting to hit that milestone

He's not going to carry a grudge for a season over something that was most likely discussed with him and he was on board with.
It's a pretty silly notion, not sure why you think 'he's that kind of person'.

Based on Marner's history and attitude in the media i have every reason to suspect he's that type of person. You think that had zero impact on Mitch?

And just because it was discussed with him doesn't mean he wanted it in his mind. I remember you posting this same line last year when Mitch's tone when asked about it was pretty sour.

I enjoy watching Marner when he's playing well, which he is most of the time. There are times however, most often in the biggest playoff games this team has played when he's absolute trash and then ... well, if enjoy watching him then good for you I guess but I sure as hell can't.

Believe what you like but forming an impression of someone over some sound bites is a little silly, IMO.

Yes I concur it's just a tidbit. A theory for his effort this year other than the usual marriage non sense.

But Marner's whole existence is being a skilled player and point accumulator. Reaching that 100 point milestone is a huge deal to him. Let's not just pretend he liked being sat out the man's a competitor and wants to get every thing he can.
