Despite 33 goals in 39 games his pts per 82 is only at 101 in a crazy high scoring league.

He isnt a top 5 player this year when he needs to be, its not b/c of the lack of goals. He needs to pump up the play making and start finding his wingers

Really? Marner fan?? Matthews is a top 5 player he’d have more Assists if his wingers scored more goals but everyone wants to pass to him that’s what makes him better with Willy cause even though he defers he still shoots and scores

Marner needs to be traded it’s that simple

Matthews by about $500-$600K

Matthews deal being only 4 years was never going to lower his price. His next 4 years will be his highly likely most productive remaining of his career, why would the price be less for short term? I don’t get how people don’t understand this. Years 5-8 of a hypothetical max term deal would be against a higher cap but with a 32-36 year old player which kinda cancel each other out.

His deal should have been 12.75M max imo but 4 vs 8 doesn’t change much here at all as far as I’m concerned.

I agree with this. I couldn't care less if Matthews' term was 4 or 8 years, he will be a Leaf from age 18-30 so we're getting his absolute peak. He'll have been at the club for 13 seasons at that point, he can do whatever he wants after that.

Hes been B- this year and he has been a franchise player 5 years before that in the reg who cant get it done come playoffs

He is no more overpaid than matthews, and is as impactful since 2019 before this year.

Marner being from toronto probably hurts his perceptiona lot

If he was american i think fans would make excuses for his poor play as much as matthews has when he has bad stretches

Why are you constantly crying about one of our players taking some criticism, are you a family member or something? Pretty much all our players are getting grief from the fans this season (and deservedly so), what is it about Marner that gets you so worked up, are you in love with him or something?

I think marner deserves to be called out for his poor play this year.

But there are a few posters who have clear agendas against marner.

It's so odd too. You hear people get upset about the constant mentioning of delay of game penalties, that they lie and make up what year it happened. A certain user said it happened 5 years ago when it was 3 years ago.
I guess we know where Marner's low smartness level comes from in the playoffs.

He shouldn't be allowed to answer questions. His quotes along with his playoffs are both bad. Ironic Mitch is sticking up for someone with a bad playoffs.

This was so predictable. Good team, and Mitch is a mix of invisible and terrible. We are going to pay him 13 million to watch these performances in the future too. I know his fans will listen to no criticism on him, but he did his act again today. Of course Keefe will continue to play him, because Marner's feelings are top priority for this organization.

Yeah, I'm so looking forward to the Leafs attempting to rebuild around an aging William Nylander in a few years. Then we can not make the playoffs again and all the guys who just complain can be happy.

Looks like a 139 point pace with Nylander and a 87 point pace with Marner.

Matthews is such a chameleon though. Often times he's this all world sniper, other times he's dogged on the backcheck and turning over pucks like a Selke guy, blocking shots for fun. Occasionally he'll make a Mario Lemieux impossible set up, but then on routine plays he just makes these awkward touch passes that don't set up any kind of clean look for anybody. For a guy who can play the game any way you want with all the tools in the world, there's just as good a chance he just blends back into the wallpaper.

Also, his partnership with Mitch can be so stale. Completely neuters his rush game.
