Feels like Mitch has started to get back to his usual self since the all-star break .. like he's dialling in more making better/smarter plays.

Agreed. I just hope they play like this in the playoffs man. Please give us one year of just dominating in the playoffs scoring greasy goals

Yes, he collects assists on Matthews goals, he is glued to the best goal scorer in the league. Matthews is on the heater lately, Mitch is collecting assists...

13.5M x 8 years. Do it now !
It’s not just he collects assists. Mitch literally creates space for Matthews and creates quality scoring chances for him. Yes Mitch wouldn’t get all the assists without Matthews goals but Matthews probably wouldn’t be scoring this much without Mitch feeding him the puck. They really are an amazing 1-2 combo.

Not sure what they are feeding these guys, but they all look possessed. Marner looks like a rabid dog out there. Never seen this intensity from him.

Starts slow then takes off later in the season

Can't understand the people who want to trade him, the guys a stud who loves the team and city

Proud of his no quit attitude
There's a reason he's called the "engine" of the team. Anyone who thinks he's riding Matthews coat tails, it's a tell they don't have any sophistication to what they see. It's actually embarrassing to read. MJ last night, you can tell he's just in awe of his IQ sometimes, such a treat to watch.

Even the biggest Marner supporters cannot say he has played like he has the past 10 games or so. He looks like he has rabies.

No one has ever denied the talent, but the intensity has been cranked up. That’s all people want to see, another Dougie G. It’s more frustration than anything for a lot of people. He brings this every night in the playoffs, nobody can say a bad word about him

He's played like this many times before, pay attention. No, he didn't look like this last year when he finished 3rd for the goddam Selke, you're right. Nor the previous end of season 1st line all star winger, those voting were obviously blind. Guys like you do this every year, you trash the crap out of him when he's just finding his form, then suddenly say "wow he's never looked like this" when he returns to his hall of fame level play. Sure, he's evolving, but to say he's never looked a "rabid dog" defies belief. Don't worry he will turn the puck over again, make sure to run here with your "analysis".

Back to playoffs only matter for people losing their minds about the guy in November.

I'm out.

Marner funny post game on getting Matthews his 50th:

"I think you saw it I'm just trying to give it too him the first three or four shifts we had together, so I'll probably get yelled at for not shooting a couple of those"

I yell at Marner all the time for not shooting enough. The guy is so much more effective when teams can't automatically assume he's going to try and force the play to Matthews.

Sure, whatever you say. If you can’t see the uptick in intensity i don’t know what to say. I guess you are just blinded by love. And it’s not just him, it’s the whole team in general.

We only got hit the hardest bc we have three of the top seven salaries in the league.
Honestly, I don’t think a lot of the contracts will be higher than or closer to 11mil even if COVID didn’t happened.
Pietra, Rosi, Jones, Makar all signed during the COVID period and I don’t think any of them will be close to 11mil.

Dmen never make the money of a superstar forward and even then, they would have all been close.

We would have probably even seen a guy like Nurse making 10 million+ (he signed for 9.25).

Before covid hit, revenues were soaring, the NHL was talking massive increases of the cap and it's not out of the question we would talking about it going over 100 million next year instead of 87.

It screwed us real hard. Instead of being able to add a couple of more impact players during the cores prime years, we have had to scramble to make things work. To try and spin it as to have been to our benefit is ludicrous.

Between the awful cap system and the failure to bring about international play, the current NHL leadership has been maybe the worst of any sports league ever. It punishes good markets, fails to grow the game, doesnt help the little guys and the guy being it all even got himself voted in to the HHOF while hes still in office!

What a crapshow.

12 years ago…Shea Weber got 14 year 110 million.. 12 freaking years ago
Karlsson 11.5
Doughty 11
dahlin 11

You do understand that their relationship on ice is symbiotic

Is Matthews benefiting from Marner ? Sure, he might only score 65-68 goals without him.

Mitch on the other hand, having his own line without an additional $11M player would show you how much he is really worth.

The affect of Mitch Marner on Matthews's ability to score is abysmal, while Mitchs primary source of points is Matthews's scoring (not Marners brilliant playmaking as you'd make it sound).

+1 Here's hoping he finally breaks through this spring!

It feels a bit like the Groundhog Day Movie, doesn't it? I got sucked in last year too and was predicting a great playoffs for Marner and it was great for 4 games, then bam, he turns into a cupcake, as usual. And the stink of game 3 against Florida is still around, how it's even possible for an NHL player, never mind a player as good as Marner to play so badly in any one game, and especially in the biggest game of the season just blows my mind.

So here we are again. Marner is all cranked up in February, his fanboys are giddy with excitement and mocking anyone who dares to question if Marner really is a demi god and our intelligence is being once again insulted with all the straw man nonsense that's getting drudged up for another round.

Will the movie end differently this time? We'll find out a couple of months from now but in the mean time, expect many more posts from a couple of his biggest fanboys along the lines of Marner is gods gift to hockey and if you disagree then you don't know what you're watching, playoffs don't matter, don't mention playoffs during the regular season yada yada yada.

Looking forward to tomorrow night. I'm usually bored to tears with the regular season around this time but it's different with Matthews doing what he's doing (I stayed up until the end last night hoping he'd score, he did not disappoint) and Colorado is a good team that's very tough at home. This is a huge test and if we can come up big in this one, being the naive homer optimist that I am I might even start believing we can make some noise in the playoffs, we'll see. GLG!!

There's a reason why Matthew's fought to have Marner on his wing, he's probably the best playmaker wing in the league and those two bring the best out of each other's skill sets

There arguably the best line in the league, every single season, they make the game fun and there ours

Let's keep it that way

Agreed, really enjoying watching them. Defensively too, just beasting back there together.

There untouchable in this form, even when there defending you know that puck is going the other way shortly
A coaches dream to watch tape.

Also McCabe post game asked about Auston said "he and Mitch don't get enough credit defensively frankly". What does he know?

.... Naaa, he's incredible. Did you see those points he picked up yesterday? Wouldn't blame you if you didn't because the highlights barely caught him in the plays.

Which one did you like more:

Assist #1: from the Benoit clearing attempt hitting his skate at his own goalie goal line

Assist #2, Marner breakout pass (assumption because highlights don't even pick up Marner having the puck lol). Matthews takes puck from his own side of the blueline and $800,000 Holmberg sets Matthews up with a beautiful pass.

Let's talk about that pass to Matthews by $800,000 Holmberg on the 7th goal... Jeez pay that man 10.5 million now, it'll be a bargain, because if you read this board, it takes 12+ million to set up Matthews. Lol

Tomorrow's a big test. IIRC, last time we played Colorado, MacKinnon outplayed Matthews by a good margin. Would be nice to see it go the other way around this time.

Now that we're rolling three lines with Tavares on the 3rd line to have a balanced attack (I've always thought we should have 1 of the core 4 on line 3 or well never win a cup), I bet Marner will improve with 2 minutes less ice time. He is asked to do every job all game every game. When he's light as a feather he's insane. When he's playing 24 minutes I think we're seeing a different player who has to conserve energy

Interesting idea. Marner seems to fall apart after the first 4 games of the playoffs, maybe he's being asked to do too much and he just burns out? Could be I guess, playoff hockey is very physically demanding and Marner's a small guy by NHL standards.

Worth trying IMO, what do have to lose. 2 minutes more or less of Marner in any one game doesn't seem like it would make a massive difference, but him turning into a cupcake after 4 games is a big problem as we need him playing like the 11 million dollar man for more than just 4 games in order to have any hope whatsoever of going deep in the playoffs. I've said it before - our best chance of being a better team in the playoffs, is for Marner to "be all he can be" in the playoffs. He's such an enormous talent and the difference between him being at his best and him being "that other" is such a huge swing.
