Yep a beauty, great hands.
Yep, got to love the skill of Tavares to find Marner despite being double teamed. Marner standing all by himself, with a wide open lane to the net. Thought it was a pp because it was Matthews, Tavares and Marner....just a 33 million on a line.

They scored. What's the problem?
Would like our 11 million players to produce more, in particular Marner. Tavares this year as well, but I give him more role because I expected him to decline towards in final year's of his contract. Nylander is still exceeding his 7 million contract.

He definately had more than 1 hit, those numbers are never very accurate.
He's certainly underperforming, part of that is not having a left winger that can play with him and Matthews. I wasn't a Bunting fan but they miss him there.
2 Elite guys like Matthews and Marner should get by with just about anyone on that line. Part of the problem is that they are so in love with each other, I don’t think they realize Knies is ever there.

Clear with every game, Mitch needs to be the one traded for a core change. Nylander being resigned might make Marner's days numbered

No its not. He is 100% getting signed to an overpay. Muskoka 3 is meant to be.

Indeed. Blaming Marner's lack of production on Bunting not being on his line anymore takes some serious ... I'll be polite and just say "imagination".:laugh:

I mean if someone's going to argue that the reason Marner's not getting that many points is because he no longer plays with Bunting, then it logically follows that a BIG reason Marner has gotten as many points as he has playing in Toronto, is that he IS playing with Matthews. So Marner is basically a product of Matthews, who would have thunk it?

Not the player he has been for the past 7 years.

Significantly worse at creating plays, handling and receiving the puck, and his top speed is noticeably lower. Something is very very off with him this season.

He is getting older and was never quick. Marner simply cant move like a kid anymore and this is common with all players like him. He is going to be like JT in the 30s but without the size. But here is the kicker, we pay him NMC him or lose him for nothing

Just trolling, need attention. It's pathetic.
Read the room. You and your three sidekicks are the only ones showering him with love and support. You are the minority! 70% voted trade him. Majority agree he's been bad this year.

I think most would be more than happy if you three had your very own marner appreciation thread, so long as this one isn't shut down as it was before. That way the majority can have discussions without you three attacking every critical yet accurate post.
And you can proceed banding together comparing him Gretzky unbothered!

Nothing but coveted cap space. Unless he agrees to be traded of course.

You are really going buy a hfboards poll for justification lol

You can get away with it in the regular season. You can't in the playoffs. Marner and AM decline in the playoffs to about the level of WN. WN does not decline at all. Marner further declines in games 5 6 7.

Just the way it is.

But this is hockey entertainment and I don't think winning a cup is 1St priority for MLSE
It is hockey entertainment. If every team’s fans had the attitude it’s Cup or I’m done with this franchise there may be less than 6 teams in the league. Enjoy each game for what it is.

It all comes down to expectations.
If the team for 3 of the 8 highest players in the league. Think it is fair for fans to have high expectations instead of just being a middle of the pack team.
I think 8-10 teams(Sharks, Ducks, Sabres, Habs, Sens, Hawks, Yotes, BJs, Caps, Blues) in the league would love to have the current Leafs record, bc the expectations of them is really low due to the talents they have.
It is not being spoil if we want to see more from the boys but rather why aren’t they living up to their potentials?
The mix is just not right. Like a band, you need a lead singer, drummer, keys, guitar, bass… but instead of a band, we have everyone playing the guitars.

Almost every team that makes the playoffs spends to the cap, only one can win. So every fan base has the same expectatations afterall they all spent max. If you keep getting matched against a better team and lose. Why the turmoil? As I said before only once in the last 8 years did we play somebody with a worse regular season than we had.

Once again expectations.
We didn’t have a bunch of no names, we had been having THREE of the top 7-8 highest paid players in the league and one of the three teams with two 10mil plus players and the only team with THREE 10mil plus players in the league over the past 5 seasons.
We had a worse regular season records than other teams in the playoffs but how many Cup winners were also the team who had the best regular seaosn records in the past 10 years?

Once again expectations.

Nomatter how hard you try to spin it, this current group is massively under achieving. They don’t often shown heart and desire to win esp when facing an uphill battles.

Like I said, there are many teams that would love to have the current Leafs records but that’s only due to their current players and not players like AM, MM, JT, Willie….

The Cap is the Cap because we paid most of it to 4 guys makes no difference, the same amount was spent. We are fortunate that we have 4 all stars but it doesn’t work because we spent too little on defence. Had we spent 11 million more on D we may have been in the elite teir. We went for star power rather than team strength. Everyone has no movement clauses, nothing is going to change that. So just enjoy each game.

Why should fans enjoy crap?
Honestly, why?
Should we drop our standards to crap bc of the way the team is built?
We can’t even voice our opinions on a hockey forum?
We can’t even discuss with others if only or what if on a hockey forum?
Do we just need to take it and think, man, we should be thankful this is not the 80s Leafs?
Come on bro, that’s a pile of crap and you know it.
If they play well or lose or win or play ugly…we can still discuss the game. That’s part of being a fan to the greatest Hockey Team in the NHL and the greatest fan base in Leafsnation.

Money puck:
Marner 2023-2024:
On ice expected goals: 49.4%
Off ice expected goals: 50.2%

Definitely not something you wanna see from one of the top paid players in the NHL.

Just found an Athletic article which takes a deep dive into advanced stats. Inficating a bunch of concerning things which some of us have already commented on:

Not only are the Leafs creating less in Marner’s minutes compared to previous seasons, but it’s also relative to his teammates this season. He’s rarely had a negative influence on his team’s expected goal creation, but this year it’s down to minus-0.17 per 60.

And that’s not the only side of the puck where Marner has been a negative relative to his teammates. There are a lot more defensive flaws on the Leafs this year compared to seasons past, and Marner has contributed to them. Toronto’s expected goals against have ticked up to 0.09 per 60 in his minutes, without any major changes in usage to explain it.
Marner’s impact, relative to the average skater when accounting for his role, usage, and coaching, is still slightly above average as the heat maps reflect below (the top row is offense/bottom row defense, with red showing areas of more expected goal generation). But he’s someone the Leafs count on to be more than slightly above average — he’s expected to be a game-breaker, along with Nylander and Matthews

Mitch Marner is scoring, but is there enough substance to his game this season?
