It is up to Dubas to do what he want with his lunch money. They didn't take them, Dubas gave them away.
Reminds me of a line in an episode of Suits, went something like this:

When you're the biggest bully in town, sometimes people give you their lunch money without you even having to ask.

Doesn't really fit here probably, it was a good line though.

It is all on the 3 amigos if they have to be broken up. IMO one of them should have been shipped out after they did not leave a penny on the table, and taking Dubas' lunch money.

And look at what's happening in Leafs nation as a result. If HFBoards is any indication... I see less posting. More people agree we arent in a position to win anytime soon.

Shanahan and Dubas put a pinhole in the Leafs tire. Shes a slow deflate but at the end of it we're headed for a flat.

I hate to say it, but this seems spot on. At the very least, that's the way I feel and I can't be the only one. I still post here but that's mostly to amuse myself while I'm not engaged during work hours. I still have the games on, but most of the time I'm not really paying attention, I'll just glance over when a goal is scored and watch the last 10 minutes if it's close or whatever. It's the first year with this core since we played WSH where I feel like our cup chances are near zero, not just this year but in the near future so unless something major changes, I'm waiting for the tire to flatten out and the next rebuild.

I feel bad for Rielly, hopefully he can pull a Borque and win a cup with someone else when he's done here.

Yup, he seems to care a lot, but on the other hand he’s got Tessa to soothe his woe’s so he’ll be fine. I wonder if he misses Hainsey?

He will throw his body only when he's under considerable scrutiny to perform. He will then throw a couple hit a out of desperation because he is fearful he will be perceived as "not caring". If 10 was the most afraid of contact a player could he, he'd be a 10. Other soft players at least occasional got engaged in after whistle shenanigans. Marner very clearly with his body language and facial and non eye contact makes it very clear he doesn't want anything of it. If.... If... He bothers even to go within 10' of it in the first place.
you could say that about all of our top paid guys

I don’t understand why we should care how Matthews reacts to personnel moves.

He got a huge contract extension and did what was best for him. He treated the Leafs and his contract like a business, which it is.

Now the leafs have to treat everyone like a business, including doing whatever they think is best for the team to win.

Matthews can be amigos on his own dime and time. He doesn’t call the shots, this isn’t the NBA, and he’s not Lebron.

I think we need to move on from Marner at this point. The situation isn’t tenable and time and again this group has shown it’s not good enough.

Something has to give. Extending Marner is just committing to more of the same not good enough results.

Let him do his lame brained junior hockey crap somewhere else for however much papa Paul demands he get. We need a deeper team and players that have another gear in the playoffs, unlike Mitch, who disappears.

And Matthews is under contract and isn't going anywhere for at least 4.5 seasons.

Imo their friendship if anything I suspect gives the Leafs a bit to extra leverage. Marner at present is the odd man out until he locks himself in with a new deal.

Sadly they’ll over Mitchie like Nylander, after all they sell a lot of jerseys, lack of playoff performances not withstanding……..

MM is a great player, skilled, vision beyond everyone except Gretz, desire to excell, unselfish and timid. 4 out of 5 ain't bad.

True but not at the level of Marner. Scared of confrontation and after whistle shenanigans? Yes to all

Strong physically on the puck? A light breeze will knock Marner down. Tavares, Nylander and Matthews are excellent at protecting the puck and shielding a checker leaning on them them off.

Matthews is good at using his body to separate oppositions from the puck. Two-three important series goals vs Tampa was Matthews physically knocking the opponent off the puck, causing the turnover and scoring.

Marner has zero physical game and almost zero ability to protect the puck with his body.

What you get with Marner is fancy but dangerous passes. Passes that become less effective and more dangerous come playoff time. Elite players (as Marner is paid) should be able to lift linemates to higher point totals. Matthews does... See Marleau, Kapanen, Johnsson stats in 2019. Tavares used to until he was no longer in his prime. Marner... He's 26, looks pretty average once he's off Matthews line and he struggles to set up anyone not named Matthews for goals. He can't even set up Tavares anymore.

Love Marner but this Matthews-Marner bromance is so overblown.

Marner has literally zero significance to Matthews wanting to be a Leaf for life. Matthews is a superstar and loves the spotlight here.

One of my favourite lines is from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Aldo Giuffre: "When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk." (After shooting the guy talking about killing him.)

Reminds me of every time the villain has the hero trapped, and decides to rant (or leave) instead of just finishing the job. If Dr No had just killed Bond in 1962 we wouldn't have to put up with all the sequels!

Disagree a little here, they are extremely close friends as well as line mates. Great players want to play with other great players, if the team around him sucked do you think Matthews would have re-signed ? I don't.

If we don't have Marner, we have others in his place though. Say we spend that cap space on D, maybe the team's better overall?

It's possible. Or we could just suck like we did in the Kessel era and have guys like Hagman and Stajan on the team.
If we spend that cap space on something other than Marner the team might be better, or it might be worse. I don't think it's realistic that we'd be that much worse though and considering how bad the team has been in the playoffs, there's something to be said for going in another direction.

Unless you're fine with just making the playoffs and think playoffs are mostly just luck anyway like some have said, I don't think that's true but if you do than keeping Marner is logical.

I totally agree, the team could be better. But we also could spend it irresponsibly how we have in the past and then the team ends up worse. If we were able to get a D man of equal or near equal value, we'd probably be a better overall team. Depends entirely how we spend his 11M.

Could also spend the Captains 11m on a Defender

Not sure if "irresponsibly" is the appropriate word but sure, every contract is a gamble in some way and some work out better than others, nobody bats .1000 etc.

If we got that Dman, I agree we'd be better but I don't see where we'd get one. More than likely what we'd do is spread out that cap space between 2-3 new guys which could work really well too but either way, 12-13 million (I assume that's what his new contract would be) spent on D instead of Marner would go a long way to improving our top 4.

Rather pic on jt he’s the one we can do withouT we can put anyone in his place and have them produce

Don't like him, never have, probably never will. Don't appreciate his dipsy doodle no look passes one bit nor his constant turnovers. When it works it looks great but when it doesn't he looks like an idiot out there.

I'll cheer him on since he's a Leaf but he's one player I could do without on this team.
You get away with that style of play in the ohl but not here.

Your right
You can’t play that style and score 600 points in 500 games played. Just impossible to do with fancy OHL passing. He should stop those plays so he can be more successful

You can get away with it in the regular season. You can't in the playoffs. Marner and AM decline in the playoffs to about the level of WN. WN does not decline at all. Marner further declines in games 5 6 7.

Just the way it is.

But this is hockey entertainment and I don't think winning a cup is 1St priority for MLSE

Not that he deserves to be there, but Marner will love the all-star game………if he doesn’t get booed
