TSN who has long been accused of having a pro leaf bias, has Marner at 23 and Rantanen at 10. They have Matthews all the way up at 3. You may like Marner more than Rantanen but it seems the stats and the rest of the hockey world do t agree with you. This is good news, it puts Marner’s ceiling at around 12.5 x 8. We should be able to get him signed now.

I was convinced that Marner was going to stay and re-sign, but after hearing that Treliving made 2 attempts to get Rantanen I don't know anymore. It sounds to me like they're not close in negotiations. Paying JT, paying Marner, and paying Knies down the road means bold decisions have to be made.

It will hurt losing Marner for nothing, for all his faults hes a solid hockey player. But there's also something to be said around cup teams and their culture. Marner can never be a culture guy with his me first attitude.
Matthews is in a similar boat but the guy has legendary potential. You absolutely buck up and pay for that. Marner, while being ultra skilled, is not as rare of a talent as Matthews. Just imagine what tre can do with an extra 11Mil to our D, we could really be turning the corner here into a stalwart defensive group.

I'll bite. Show me proof of the number and term that Marner is asking. Then show me proof not some journalists opinion of the number and term that the Leafs are offering. You guys are getting all wound up over rumours and journalists making shit up or being used by both sides in the negotiations. Also, it's very probable that Marner will go to UFA as is his right. Why are you exhausting yourself over rumours.

Funnily his biggest money offers from other teams are likely going to be from non-playoff teams. Chicago/Pittsburgh /New York/Anaheim also have state income taxes so there goes the narrative that the Leafs have to grossly overpay to compensate for taxes

This is just fine. Marner is now under tremendous pressure to perform and that can only help our chances of winning a cup. If he does what he normally does, he costs himself millions and we aren't on the hook for yet another albatross contract. He's the one taking the gamble.
The problem is the only person you listen to is Marner. Multiple sources saying the Leafs offered Marner more than Rantanen signed for, it doesn't matter.
Do you expect Marner to come out and say I want 13M+? Why would he say that? Would he enjoyed getting booed the rest of the season?

"Multiple sources" is all that you should need to hear to dismiss it. Marner deserves more than Rantanen. Marner and his agent would never publicly announce their offers but both sides might use the media to negotiate.
What proof do you have they're making any of this up?
Common sense and reading between the lines of what's been reported would suggest the Leafs have likely made a fairly generous offer to Marner without knowing every single detail.

Can someone please list out a deal that makes sense for both Toronto and Marner? I honestly cant do it if its not 12.5 x 8, and im not really sure that makes sense for us.
It’s not the end of the world if he walks for nothing. A deadline trade may have gotten 2 1sts, look what we got for 2 1sts. It was something but we wouldn’t be crushed without Laughton and Carlo.
If he wasn't willing to sign to a decent deal that works for the Leafs, then we really should just wait and see how the playoffs go. If we fail to succeed, and as usual he's a big part of that failure, we are probably better re-allocating that cap elsewhere anyway. We can't keep doing the same thing, and expecting different results... at some point we are going to have to change it up.
