This puts a lot of pressure on the Marner camp. Leafs management is not afraid of turning this one into a back-alley brawl … no more handling Mitch with kid gloves.

I'm not inflating Rantanen’s value, just giving him the credit he’s earned.
You're giving him more credit than he's earned, while withholding the credit Marner earned.
Marner is a great player, but calling him ‘superior’ in every aspect is misleading.
Rantanen is a great player, but Marner is superior offensively and defensively in every game state.
If you want to talk about ignoring context, look in the mirror. Rantanen’s impact speaks for itself, you just don’t want to acknowledge it
I haven't ignored any context. I'm the one pointing it out. Saying that it "speaks for itself" is just a fancy way of saying you're ignoring the context,
Fair enough but at least they posted a ranking by TSN
So nothing then.

Again. Rantanen is a minus player without Mack.
Last three full regular seasons

Asked to waive but refused.

My prediction of Marner being moved at the deadline came really close, but no cigar.

They didn't really asked to waive it...

Actually they are talking together about the offer but saying his goal was to resign him because like every GM, he had to consider a Rantanen deal if he wanted to go somewhere else. He declined because he said he wanted to stay in Toronto

Not comparable because of the no tax in Dallas thing.. I think the leafs will offer 13.25
he gets paid in usd which is stronger than cad

he gets ad opportunities like almost no where else

if he is willing to walk over 8-10m than so be it, but don't act like us giving him similar to the rantanen deal is not comparable

Agreed. The tone matters significantly because Tre still leaves the door open for Marner to re-sign instead closing the door completely, I think. Seems like Tre was just offering the opportunity for Marner to go elsewhere if he chooses. It was a nice shot by Tre, though. However, Marner's wife is pregnant I believe so there's no way he was gonna waive at this moment

I did. But it doesn't matter. Believe what you want.

Marner is a worse goal scorer. Rantanen is a worse playmaker, and overall player.

GMs and agents use the valuable metrics available to them. The idea that you think GMs can't handle more than one stat in negotiations is hilarious.
Points combines even more point types than primary points, so your argument is weird.

Maybe if shots and blocks were a more significant part of a player's overall impact, and it aligned with contract history. But it

1.) again. Show your evidence that the hockey world views Marner as more valuable there are many quotes of the opposite and new information that treliving asked Marner to waive to trade for rantanen. I don’t even like that move.
But that would be “evidence”.

You have not provided any.

2.) I do believe that GMs can use more than one stat. I don’t believe there is any evidence ever that GMs value primary assists the same as goals.
An 80 goal 20 assist player is worth more than a 20 pt 80 assist player

3.) I also believe that you are falsely comparing points (goals and assists) vs goals. We are comparing two players with virtually identical point paces.

4.) most importantly I believe that if the NHl was using primary points as a primary factor for million dollar decisions they would actually keep track of it on their website

5.) you have not at all proven that similar “primary point” contract histories line up.

Are you actually suggesting that a

80 goal 20 primary assists 50 secondary assist (80 goal 150pt player)

Would make as much as a
20 goal 80 primary assist 20 secondary assist player?
(20 goal 120 pts)?

so if marner didn't waive then that means he DOES wanna stay right? (or he is pulling a tavares which would REALLY suck and be kinda scummy)

If so, we really need to get this guy at a good deal, he shouldn't be getting more than 12.5 I'd say and that's with a great playoffs.
Personally I think it's something in the middle. Since he doesn't appear to be afraid of losing that 8th year, I surmise he wants to use the ufa market as leverage to a short term deal ie 13m x 3, then he'll wait for Matthews to go first...at this point the cap could be 120m and 14% would be 16.8m, that will be when he wants his 8 year deal, ages 30-38 at 16.8m.

Marner can not play in the playoffs. He is a perimeter player that has few skills other then playmaking and defends like any old 3rd liner on the PK.

Time and space Marner good. No time in space Marner bad because his poor speed/shot. He is nowhere near Rantanen.

Morgan Reilly sucks defensively. His foot speed sucks now and he has the lowest IQ on the Leafs.

Why would you say Marner is superior offensively?
Rantaben scores way more then Marner and although Marner is a great setup man allot of his assists come from player with consistently the top scorer In The league?! And Raantanen has reached 100+pts more then once I believe

Either way I really like where this is headed
I really hope Tre is the GM I hope he is
Marner shouldn’t accept 1 cent more then rantanen and I’d be very happy to watch Marner walk if he doesnt

Leafs above 16!!
Let’s see how bad Marner wants to wear his PJ’s

holy shit, we asked Marner if he wanted to go to Carolina in a Rantanen deal

IMPORTANT NOTE: Leafs told Marner they want to keep him, but a trade was open to Carolina if he didn't want to stay

I respect Tre for doing that. It now puts the ball in Marner’s court. & takes a little bit of the scrutiny off the leafs, We gave you the out.

Asked to waive but refused.

He wasn’t asked to waive, they told him they want to keep him. They gave him the option of Carolina if he wanted out. There’s a clear difference. So it looks like he wants to stay

Thank you Dubas for that NTC as a final f*** you.

Why are we thanking Dubas? The leafs literally had 4 years within the 6 year contract to move him. Be angry at Shanahan. Buying years of UFA is going to cost you an NMC in the NHL. They had 4 years of full control over him and elected not to move him. So being up and arms about it now is moot.

Damn looks like Rantanen was close to signing with the Oilers.

North of what he signed with Dallas.

I forgot who I was talking to, but I brought up Edmonton could swoop in to try and sign Marner and was told it was a pipe dream and the money couldn’t work. If they had money for Rantanen they have the money for Marner. Yeah… I could still see it happening.

This is a great article

In the report, Friedman confirmed that the Leafs communicated to Marner that it is their intention to sign him. Marner responded by declaring his intention to remain in Toronto, declining to waive his NMC to be dealt to Carolina, keeping the door open to re-sign with the Leafs.

"The Hurricanes initially asked for Mitch Marner in return for Rantanen. Because it was for Rantanen, the Maple Leafs had to consider it. They told the winger their desire is to sign him, but they had to ask in this case. As is his right, Marner declined to move, re-iterating his desire to stay.

Neither the Maple Leafs, the Hurricanes, nor Marner's agent, Darren Ferris, would comment. But that could have been the biggest blockbuster of the week."
