The recent reporting about a possible Marner for Rantanen swap which Treliving was prepared to do then it goes to say had both Marner and Rantanen made it to free agency the Leafs would have signed Mikko instead.

That has been my pipe dream all season long and it almost happened, that Leafs would be willing to move on from Mitch and invest his Cap in the Big Finn instead.

Rantanen brings down Marner’s value, sure someone will overpay in free agency, but for the Leafs it puts a real marker out there. 12.25 looks fantastic for him now.
If he signed for that I could live with it. Wouldn't be overjoyed but I'd take it. This also depends on his playoff performance, if it isn't stellar, he can walk and we can spend the dollars elsewhere.

So they actually asked Marner about the Carolina trade? Wowsers!!!!

I’m happy that Tre is willing to at least ask him, shows Ferris doesn’t hold all the cards here and the Leafs are willing to explore options. Marner’s camp can’t be upset, they’ve tried to sign him and his agent is bent on July 1st.

It really doesn't say that at all. Once again you hear what you want to hear but not actual reality. What Toronto wants is certainty, they wanted one of them signed for long-term rather than hopefully one of them signed by summer.

It was reported that the Leafs would trade Marner straight up for Mikko but they didn't want to ask Marner to waive his NMC (because we all know he wouldnt have).

No more NMC for players until they are legends. It's embarrassing. At the very least, have a 10 team list for any player and complete freedom to trade after three years or so. it's ridiculous to have a team locked in to a player even if he is garbage.

Leafs also have to learn to waive players more and bite the bullet. It's not fun to lose profits in that player but it's better than losing every post-season, the revenue from an extra round or two dwarfs what a player would cost them to be waived if they can then upgrade the position.

Why are we thanking Dubas? The leafs literally had 4 years within the 6 year contract to move him. Be angry at Shanahan. Buying years of UFA is going to cost you an NMC in the NHL. They had 4 years of full control over him and elected not to move him. So being up and arms about it now is moot.
Pastrnak's last contract and this one has a M-NTC (8-10-10 teams) through the last three years
Rantanen's last contract had a 2 year M-NTC (9-9 teams)
Sebastian Aho's current contract has a 1 year M-NTC (15 teams)
Brayden Point's last three years have a 3 year M-NTC (10 teams throughout)
Even draisaitl's last contract had a M-NTC but for 10 teams
hell even kucherov had a M-NTC for the last 3 years of his deal (10 teams throughout)

meanwhile we handed out NMC's to Matthews and Marner completely and to Nylander too, and there is a mix of UFA and RFA signings above so that can't be the reason either.

it isn't the most flexibility as the player still gets to chose where he goes, but it makes a move such as this possible from the franchise's standpoint vs a full NMC

it is Dubas's (Tre in the nylander UFA and Matthews UFA deals) fault that he gave them everything (High AAV's, shorter terms, full move protections) and in the deals we got nothing back

Funny that this was leaked by Friedman and not Dreger.

I guess Ferris thought Marner saying he wants to stay might have reduced his bargaining power, so Ferris felt the need to interject and shit his pants yesterday, saying he would be willing to test FA

I would have told him that they were not going to sign him so staying past this year was not an option unless he accepted a fair number the Leafs could live with.

You're giving him more credit than he's earned, while withholding the credit Marner earned.
Actually, I’m just giving Rantanen the recognition he deserves based on his consistent performance, especially when it matters most in the playoffs. It’s not about inflating his value, it’s about acknowledging the full scope of his impact his size, scoring ability, and two-way game, which is better than Marner's.
Rantanen is a great player, but Marner is superior offensively and defensively in every game state.
While Marner certainly brings a lot to the table offensively and defensively, saying he's superior in every game state ignores Rantanen’s undeniable impact. Rantanen's offensive game, especially his goal-scoring ability, is elite, and his playmaking is just as dangerous. He can take over games, especially in tight situations or during high-stakes moments, which is something Marner hasn’t consistently done to the same extent.
I haven't ignored any context. I'm the one pointing it out. Saying that it "speaks for itself" is just a fancy way of saying you're ignoring the context,
Saying something ‘speaks for itself’ means the results are clear. Rantanen’s impact is evident without needing to twist the narrative. You claim to be pointing out context, but in reality, you're selectively framing it to fit your argument.

The context you’re ignoring? Rantanen’s goal-scoring dominance, his ability to elevate in the playoffs, and his physical presence, which adds another dimension to his game that Marner simply doesn’t have. Context isn’t just about raw numbers—it’s about how a player’s skill set translates to winning hockey. And in that regard, Rantanen has proven himself just as much, if not more, than Marner."
So nothing then.
Yes I agree you've provided nothing to back up your claim.

All the guys who love marner just a question...

Aren't you guys tired. This dude is so f***ing difficult. Like STFU take 12-12.5 and move on. You get endorsements and paid in usd to live and be a GOD according to his words in his own hometown. Like bro you're talented but you're such a bitch. God it's exhausting.

He wasn’t asked to waive, they told him they want to keep him. They gave him the option of Carolina if he wanted out. There’s a clear difference. So it looks like he wants to stay
Yeah but at his ridiculous ask. Can't have your cake and eat it. Here's hoping Tre does not cave like he did to Nylander. Either way, Mitch is not helping his brand with a good chunk of the fan base. He won't want to stay if they are punted in round #1 or 2.

He wants to stay but at his number, a number Leafs refuse to go to. And he wonders why a chunk of the fanbase can't stand him.
Can you imagine if he doesn't sign now that we know this. We could have had Rantanen yet may end up with nothing but cap space because he wouldn't waive his NMC? He'll become the worst hated Leaf in history. He better sign for nothing more than 12.5 for 8 years.

While I'm quite uncertain as to what to do with Marner.

I don't really like all this stuff leaking about a possible trade, particularly if it came from the management. Just seems like a desperate move to save face to leak it.in the event of another early exit.

Nikita Grebenkin: "Forecheck....Backcheck....Paycheck"
Mitch Marner: "Paycheck....Paycheck....Paycheck"

While all media reporting on stuff like this never quite paints the full picture, can't help but cringe that Marner's representation/Marner himself is fumbling his brand quite a bit. The guy should be the most beloved sports celebrity in the city, instead the entire public narrative is going to focus on what are likely absurd contract demands.

If Leafs management don't budge, Ferris may have overplayed his hand, especially with the Rantanen contract being taken care of well before July laying down a hard ceiling on aav expectations

Will be interesting to see the fans reaction if they shit the bed against Florida the next home game (March 13). Said it many times, Ferris is not doing this guy any favours but at the end of the day, this moron can dictate what he wants from his agent.

Take a look at Ferris' other clients, you'll see a pattern. This is all by design, the guy doesn't give a F about player reputation - he's here to get his guys paid at all costs.

That’s not reported. What was reported was that they DID ask him to. They said, we want to keep you but if you don’t want to sign we can trade you if you want.

As much as I would hate to run it back after another playoff disappointment, I'd rather sign him to a slightly higher Nylander deal than have him walk for nothing. Said it many times, sign at a team friendly deal and you will win over many of the fans you pissed off with your last negotiations.

You then need to add a Bennett to add a different flavour to the top 6. JT would have to give us a sweet deal or walk for nothing.
