if anything I think this kind of makes Kippers reporting of it not being about money more true, wouldn't you say? We know the ceiling is probably around 12 million and I'm sure Marner's camp is well aware of the market as well. If Rantanen isn't getting more than 12, I'm sure Marner's camp is well aware he is likely not getting about 12 or 12.5.

I hope you're right because your logic and reasoning is solid. :)

Here are the top playoff scorers from the past 4 years.

Marner has 11 goals and 50 playoff points in 57 playoff games his entire 8 year playoff career and ranks 40th in terms of last 4 years combined where he has 6 goals and 29 points in direct comparison above.

Marner is not even in the same ball park as Rantanen as a playoff performer.

Nate MacKinnon resigned for 8 years @$ 12.6 mil and Rantanen now re-signs for 8 years @ $12 mil AAV then Marner's ceiling < $12 mil.

Moving Ranta and Mittlestat and brining in Necas, Nelson and Coyle is pretty good work for the Avs. Their problem is they may now have to face Ranta and the Stars. They better hope they face Carolina Ranta and not Colorado Ranta.

If I'm an Avs fan, I still have to question why we trade him over $250,000. Maybe he wasn't great in the locker room or they didn't like his personality. But Necas has been a great addition, Coyle, Nelson, Lindgren also great moves too. I still like Dallas, EDM and Vegas more. But they are poised to make an upset

TSN who has long been accused of having a pro leaf bias, has Marner at 23 and Rantanen at 10. They have Matthews all the way up at 3. You may like Marner more than Rantanen but it seems the stats and the rest of the hockey world do t agree with you. This is good news, it puts Marner’s ceiling at around 12.5 x 8. We should be able to get him signed now.
TSN pro Leaf bias. Good one. Where TSN ranks players is irrelevant. Their rankings are usually horrific. Some media personalities might like Rantanen more, but the actual hockey world values Marner more, and recognises that he is the better player. Very unlikely we'd be able to get Marner for 12.5m, but fingers crossed for a discount.

wait you think Marner is going for more than 12.5?!

Speaking of horrific…your takes

So Ranta gets $12m. What team Mitch is willing to go to is paying him more than Mikko let alone Matthews? Forget the tax bullshit. Mitch has been overpaid for the last 6 years by over $1.5mx6=$9m and has delivered f*** all in the playoffs.
Whether he's produced or not to our liking Leafs still have to pay players more due to the tax situation. The problem was completely Dubas giving these guys huge contracts so early in their career. Add to that did he miss the boat by not signing them a year earlier?

It is so scary that a team with Mack, Makar, Toews, Necas, Coyle, Nelson and Blackwood is poised to make an upset. Just shows how stacked the other teams are.

I think Vegas' is just so stacked defensively and they are fast and big. Dallas might be the most well balanced team in the NHL. Edmonton has the two best players in the NHL. So those are my top 3.

The odds are here that the asking price by Rantanen was much higher than when reality set in and COL, and Car & Dal and he maxed out at $12 mil.. Avs dealt him knowing they were not going to pay him more than Nate Mac making $12.6 mil.

Marner might be sitting there asking +$14 mil from the Leafs, but if he hit the free agent market and GM's look at what Rantanen maxed out at as a pending UFA, then there might be a GREAT Awakening coming for Mitch.

Marner’s the better player? Have you seen their playoff stats?
A reasonable person couldn't even argue that using regular season stats.

Last (almost) 3 seasons among RW:

Marner is 15th in goals, 2nd in assists and 4th in points
Rantanen is 2nd, 4th, and 3rd.
Nylander is 3rd, 6th, and 5th, so there's even a reasonable argument that he's better.

(Both Rantanen and Nylander have more primary points.)

Guys you underestimate how much Chicago will throw at Marner this offseason.

(Not saying the leafs should give him 13m.) 12m or he’s gone but still
