Why 12.5mil? If teams like Stars and Avs, closer to the Cup than Leafs ain’t offering more than 12mil for Rantanen. Why should Leafs offering 12.5mil for MM, who is essentially the same level as Rantanen.Mitch doesn’t get a penny more than $12.5 million AAV on his next deal.

What Stars and Avs maybe even Canes are setting market price for guys like Rantanen, MM, and others who are a level below guys like Mack, Drai, AM.
Three teams won’t go to 13mil and at the end Rantanen settled for 12mil.
That’s a good indication that contending teams are reluctant to go over 12mil for a player
Taxes and the fact that the Leafs always seem to slightly overpay their stars when compared to similar players.
exactly what I thought would happen man, that 14 million number was BS from the start. Anyone thinking Marner is making that is delulu. Have always believed he isn't sniffing anywhere close to that. The ceiling for Marner was always going to be higher than Nylander and lower than Matthews.
I think holding firm at 12 is what Leafs should do.
Asking for 14 is fine as long as Leafs don’t offer that, lol.
Exactly. All depends on playoffs resultsI don't even think Rantanten or Marner has asked for that. I feel like that number was thrown out by an insider for clicks and they used the increasing cap and probably guestimated. But it worked like a charm, people spent the last 3 months on here screaming and shouting about a fake number.
Now the conversation comes to, at 12 or 12.5 is Marner still worth it? That's a more reasonable discussion point. At this time, it's hard to know... the playoffs will dictate a lot. If they get slapped in the first round, probably not. I think you just try something new and reallocate that money + the cap rise.
If this is true, we see a much firmer ceiling placed on salary expectations for Marner. Likely have to adjust for state-provincial taxes gaps to an extent
Marner’s the better player? Have you seen their playoff stats? It really just reinforces the floor. Marner was always going to get more as the better player.

Yes I have seen them, and yes, Marner is the better player.Marner’s the better player? Have you seen their playoff stats?
Rantanen has as many playoff goals and playoff points himself as Matthews and Marner have combined in their entire careers.Marner’s the better player? Have you seen their playoff stats?
if anything I think this kind of makes Kippers reporting of it not being about money more true, wouldn't you say? We know the ceiling is probably around 12 million and I'm sure Marner's camp is well aware of the market as well. If Rantanen isn't getting more than 12, I'm sure Marner's camp is well aware he is likely not getting about 12 or 12.5.So Ranta gets $12m. What team Mitch is willing to go to is paying him more than Mikko let alone Matthews? Forget the tax bullshit. Mitch has been overpaid for the last 6 years by over $1.5mx6=$9m and has delivered f*** all in the playoffs.
TSN who has long been accused of having a pro leaf bias, has Marner at 23 and Rantanen at 10. They have Matthews all the way up at 3. You may like Marner more than Rantanen but it seems the stats and the rest of the hockey world do t agree with you. This is good news, it puts Marner’s ceiling at around 12.5 x 8. We should be able to get him signed now.Yes I have seen them, and yes, Marner is the better player.
So at the end of the day Ranta leaves the Avs for $250k more than what the Avs offered. Hope he likes Dallas because he clearly did not like Raleigh.

Moving Ranta and Mittlestat and bringing in Necas, Nelson and Coyle is pretty good work for the Avs. Their problem is they may now have to face Ranta and the Stars. They better hope they face Carolina Ranta and not Colorado Ranta.I also said this when the rantanen trade happened, but this to me just reinforces what I said back then. They were planning on moving him all along. He wasn't really apart of their long term plans post cup. Now more than ever it feels like they had already made up their minds from the off-season or earlier in the season they were moving on from him. From the blindside trade, to Rantanens comments of he was willing to sign for less to sign with the Avs, from now him reportedly signing an extension with Dallas. Master class by a team on how to control the narrative and also acquire pieces that can contribute so that no one questions the move. Gotta give it to Sakic/McFarland
