Except in terms of goal scoring and playoff production.

Marner may very well and try to use free agency offers to test your argument this summer, but I'm not confident he's going to find teams falling over themselves to pay him noticably more than Rantanen, unless he's potentially willing to go to an absolute bottom feeder like the Ducks, and then he's free to throw away the rest of his prime
Hawks might be where MM is signing.

They need to keep Bedard happy and interested.
They need to make a big splash.
They have the cap room

Well this could change if Marner has a monster playoff this year and the Leafs go on a deep run. Like the ECF or even SCF.

But yeah if they crash and burn in the 1st round again and he looks as bad and disengaged as he has looked in the last 3 or 4 playoffs then yeah he's definitely gone.

I think the Blackhawks will offer him 13m. but It really depends on how much he wants to win.

Sigh..

I tend to agree Rantenan was bumped up playing in the situation he was with the Avs but I’m curious about the sample size without Mack besides the handful of games in Carolina.
If he does not produce in Dallas, he is likely a product of MacKinnon. Although the Stars do not have a bonifide #1C like MacKinnon, McDavid or McMatthews.

Last 3 full seasons:5v5

Rantanen with Mackinnon GF% 60.87
Rantanen without Mackinnon GF% 42.50

Rantanen is a byproduct of Mackinnon.
what is marners with matthews vs tavares in the same span?

They'll probably offer him a generous 7 year contract, but I'm skeptical it's going to be dramatically higher in terms of aav than what we saw today.

GMs tend to have group think over these things

To take 7 x 13 with Chicago and reject 8 x 12 from Toronto who you claim you want to play for would be insane.

But I would not put it past Paul.
I think. Especially after how the last contract situation went. We have to take Marners "really" wanting to play in Toronto as just words.

To add to this Matthews signed both times, there wasn't a worry. Nylander held out, signed and then his most recent contract he took 8 years. Both of those guys have pretty much always shown they've wanted to be here.

As we've seen in the past, Paul isn't interested in a hometown discount.
Oh well Dubas awaits, some nice neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. Trump’s a hockey fan, best of luck other than when he plays us ofcourse.

Some of Pittsburgh's wealthiest neighborhoods, including both within the city and in nearby suburbs, include Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Fox Chapel, and Downtown/Strip District.

After what Florida picked up we'll be lucky to get past them.

TSN who has long been accused of having a pro leaf bias, has Marner at 23 and Rantanen at 10. They have Matthews all the way up at 3. You may like Marner more than Rantanen but it seems the stats and the rest of the hockey world do t agree with you. This is good news, it puts Marner’s ceiling at around 12.5 x 8. We should be able to get him signed now.
Why would we sign this playoff non performer?

It's also likely a bit of signalling from the front office to Ferris/Marner's camp that the Leafs aren't afraid to consider other options if the two sides stay far apart.

Pucks on Mitch's stick now until July while.he makes up his mind

Through the (almost) 3 seasons prior to signing...

P/GP (no EN)
Marner: 1.17
Rantanen: 1.12
Nylander: 1.08

5v5 P/60
Marner: 2.67
Nylander: 2.39
Rantanen: 2.18

PP P/60
Marner: 7.67
Nylander: 7.02
Rantanen: 6.18

Marner also brings defensive and PK impacts that the other two dont. It's not surprising that Rantanen had trouble even getting the same contract as Nylander, let alone Marner.

Marner is a better producer and primary producer and defensive player in every single game state, and he plays more game states. Rantanen is better at getting empty net points, and being on a team that gets more PP opportunities and faces worse playoff goaltending. Many teams would pay good money to get Marner. Hopefully we don't let them.

Can you see him doing anything different playing against Barkov, Tkachuk, Bennett and Marchand?
