I think the Dougie thing is just a tribute. A is something I don’t mind as both AM and him are supposed to lead the Leafs for the next decade.

He just needs to keep his game simple instead of wanting to make a highlight reel play in order to win fans and praises.
I actually think he picked the Leaf with the highest jersey number, so that he can milk the Leafs further in negotiations. If it was Sundin it could have been just 10.13 ... but with his trick he almost got 1 more million.

Keefe has the same dilemma Dubas saw himself in. Dubas could've let him sit the season and we would've been without one of our best players. Keefe can bench him, then we're down one of our best players. Do you let him play himself out of it? I think he comes from a generation where a benching might make things worse.

He'll sulk on the bench and pout. Not sure it will set a fire under him. Seems like only money was his motivating factor.
He is NOT one of our best players. The core forwards right now are Spezza, Kase, Nylander and JT. The 3 and 4 lines played great last night. Our best centre is 38 years old. Maybe play Spezza with 34.

Yes it is totally that and not the horrible housing market, shit pay, flooded job market, the amount of debt you have to pile up just to have a chance at a job, climate change, constant stress and pressure from social media and peers etc.

You sound like a clown.
Random Gen Z goes to school like they were told. Gets that fancy degree and comes out with fresh 30-40k in debt and the only job they can get is paying $16/hr on a temp contract while housing has gone up over 20% in a year annnnd gotta listen to out of touch old farts talk about how lazy you are while they sit in a house that is only going up in value that you won't be able to afford until you are 45! I have gotten somewhat lucky myself in falling into a decent company after losing my job I got out of school because of Covid but it is mind numbing how out of touch some people are with reality of just how f***ed young people are in trying to build a stable future in the same way that previous generations have been able to. This is all wildly off topic though lmao.

His supporters on this board are starting to sweat.... they're banking on you Mitch, and your reallllly making them look bad. They can only say "just you wait, Marner will make you eat crow" for so long you know.

LOL I’m not sweating shit. Marner playing well or bad has no bearing on anything in my life. I do not care that much. I like him as a player, I always will through the good and the bad and that’s it. Some people don’t like him respectfully so. Some of you guys take HF Boards and hockey way too seriously & get a weird high by taking a shit on players here daily. Take it easy brother, it’s just a hobby.

This guy shook right now.

Dom from the Athletic said he hasnt had a 1 pt in 5 game stretch since January 2018 lol.

doesn’t this only demonstrate how good he’s actually been and the crazy overreaction people have been having?
Easily the worst stretch of his career but lots of top players have slumps.

It’s really too bad Marner was so “entrepreneurial” against the Leafs in negotiations. Plenty of guys from his cohort have had individual and team success to ask for that kind of money but stopped just short of taking their franchises behind the woodshed.

Splitting hairs on what’s worth what exactly, but if he’s not even able to produce regular season numbers this year you can kind of see the end of the marriage on the horizon. Don’t think MLSE can ice a miserable player in front of a miserable crowd for the life of the deal.

im so tired of this narrative. That’s on the organization. If they didn’t want Marner to make 10.93 million all they had to say was no. You think other guys in his cohort said oh you know I’m just gonna ask for 9 and that’s it. Give me a break, it’s really a load of shit. They definitely used Marner as a comparable. But guess what the organizations said no. Take this or sit for the season. That should have been the approach the leafs took. Has nothing to do with Marner.

only thing he should be criticized for is not playing up to the contract he agreed to.

EDIT: also those organizations had one thing we didn’t. Their best players were already signed to team friendly deals so it was hard for RFA’s to command what Marner/Matthews did because how can Rantanen really ask for 4 million more than MacKinnon, how could Point ask for a ton more than Stamkos/Kucherov. The Organization did not have the proper internal cap structure to flex in negotiations.

It's really asinine to ask for something like that in your contract salary and think it's some kind of actual tribute to Gilmour. If that doesn't scream narcissism to you, then I have nothing more to say.

God forbid that "A" or 11M contract actually be earned after proving to be a real winner. Make no mistake, Matthews is to be criticized too but he plays centre and I'm realistic.

so is Crosby a douche too? Because he wanted the number 87 in his contract

Marner is empty calories. He'll end up with 90 points on the year somehow and then have more puck over glass penalties in the playoffs than points.

I don't think I've disliked a Leaf star player more.

I love that analogy!

Trading marner for Depth is the smart and easy move rn.

Look at the teams trying to trade for Eichel, ask them for the same package of players. 1st + 2 Roster depth players + ELC prospect who is close to breaking in. See if anyone bites on this.

It depends on whether you want to win the battle or the war. Benching is exactly what Marner needs. If he sulks, too bad. He felt he was worth all that money, as did Dubas, but guess what? He isn’t.
Saw this on Maple Leafs Hotstove, and I totally agree:

I can't really imagine a player like Mackinnon, Matthews, or McDavid being as invisible as Marner has been to start the season. He's getting crushed with criticism because he held out to be paid like he's in that group of players. He just isn't at all.

Like I'm not trying to pile on. Things won't stay this bad. But that whole negotiation was about how Marner thought he was a tier above guys like Aho, Rantanen, Point, etc. Absurd from the outset.

oh no, I'd hate for him to not score goals, play well, or.....oh wait, he already is

You'd prefer to completely destroy the kid's self worth, further reduce his value, and poison the relationship to where a trade demand is likely just to send a "message" he's already aware of?

Great idea :sarcasm:

One point in five games is simply unacceptable from a 10+ million dollar player.

It doesn't help that Matthews has been off in his first couple games back and Tavares' 3 in 5 seem like empty calorie points.

He poisoned the relationship when he was demanding 9 million and not showing up for training camp.

He has no self worth or future worth if he keeps not producing. What's he going to do, score less than the 0 goals he is now?

I'll be honest, I think he has no future worth, and it's in our best interests to move him now before we're stuck with him. We should be sending a message. This nonsense is unacceptable.

I am sure that it's Paul Marner and he has multiple accounts to support his son. No sane person can believe that he deserves that contract.
When he pulled his stunt off with the team should’ve been traded at that point he’s a big crybaby no one is bigger than the team if you allow that then you’re re-creating the Muskoka five

For all the stink emanating from one Mitchell Marner, there's always another story in the NHL world ready to overshadow it.

All of us Leafers whether you're from the Nation or you're from the pyromaniacal LeaFland take note. Without being asked by anybody St Paddy Roy has stated out loud and without shame that he is definitely interested in the Canadiens top job, but and it's a Kardashian sized but, "would consider any other top job in the game."

So I know there's a small but very loud contingent that 1. Wants Marner gone. and 2. Wants Dubious gone with him.

Given the information available I would say to be careful, and I mean really careful as to what you wish for.
