marner deserves no blame, if he sat out like willy did maybe its a bit more grey, he asked for a number they accepted. hows that on him? would you leave money on the table at your job willingly?

but it’s so sickening how people are blaming him. He’s been benched for most of the 3rd period. But this is what we do in leafs land, we don’t appreciate how good we have it and turn on our players first chance we get.

McCabe, Kessel, Phaneuf, Gardiner, Nylander, Marner. Probably a shit ton more I’m missing. Just disgusted to be a leafs fan these days

He hasn't been benched most of the third period, Hughson is an idiot and was commenting on the fact he's played 3 shifts with Tavares in a penalty filled third

Marner was very public in his demands and what level of player he felt he was. That built the pressure and its on him. Team structure and supporting cast will be on Dubas. These weren't quiet or quick negotiations

You're laughably bad at defending Marner. Do you actually know how the very public, very controversial contract negotiation saga went?

He went public and said he was worth Matthews money. He drew a line in the sand and made the comparison, not just with the team, but publicly. And he's struggled with the pressure.

My job isn't a professional athlete, but people who overvalues themselves in negotiations are let go every day in corporate jobs. Your salary, especially when based on your demands, equal production. He won't be fired, he'll just face criticism, which hasn't been handled well to this point.

Bieksa's comments were spot on. Contracts = pressure. His negotiation was more public than most, and it doesn't help him at all. He asked for this and can't handle it.

Hey look who got benched. It was Marner and not Tavares. Looks like Keefe didn't believe JT was playing as bad as Marner.

Marner literally insulted the team through the media and said he was worth more then he was. He deserves a majority of the blame, but he keeps getting excuses which is not new.

lol, this fanbase is so angry. i take it all back, its ALL marners fault that we arent playing well. well, him and his contract.

I got excited when I thought he was benched . And found out his skate laces were not tied and his father was tying them for him
 
I loved Marner and used to watch him play in juniors before he was drafted. When we had the prospect poll (it was always between Hanifin, Strome and him), I would always vote for Marner because I thought he could be like our Claude Giroux or Patty Kane.

So much skill and talent, but now he looks mentally destroyed. I should say I feel really sorry for him, but I can't, after he willingly robbed the team to get himself a luxurious contract. Oh well, should definitely look to trade him because this team needs a change.

And how many playoff series did they win ? I’m a fan of the team not just a few players who didn’t win anything. Too many fans have low standards. At the end of the day winning is what matters.

It was obvious he wasn't going to live up to that contract. The safe move was bridge. The next level GM move would have been trade

It was obvious he wasn't going to live up to that contract. The safe move was bridge. The next level GM move would have been trade
 
He’s definitely struggling right now. The pressure is affecting him negatively. And I don’t think this coach knows how to help him through it.

could be a bumpy year around here.

Shouldn't have made his contract negotiations public and ask for the moon.

Stay out of the kitchen if you can't handle the heat.

Fkn idiot contract is a cancer on this team.

I don’t think any coach can help him through.
He is mentally too weak to get demoted to the 4th for easier match ups.
You kept playing him with top players but he seems to dragged them down.
He needs to figure it out himself and it is not a lucky bounce to get a goal or assist thing. Just look at JT, we all thought after he scored a goal, he will calm down and play better and yet he played his worst game of the season after he scored.
I really think a change of scenery will
be good for him but whichever team ends up with him, he will most likely be their highest paid player and expect to lead that team which is something he really can’t at the moment.
If only the Olympics is next week or so, where if selected, he can play and just be himself instead of being the top star and have other top players to rely on and win.
Sadly, that won’t be the case. The only thing left is for him to play like the top player he thinks he is.
