Marner should be traded. Not as knee jerk reaction either. He's done in TO. He needs a fresh start soewhere and we need the cap space and a shakeup.

This team is going nowhere with Marner on it. Especially in such a crucial role and with a letter on his jersey.

I dont think any team will touch that contract now. Not unless the Leafs have to retain a portion.
Management is a joke, Shanahan, Dubas, and Keefe, all learning on the job. Basically with no NHL experience coming into their positions.

the good thing is that the real dollars left to be paid is low. there are teams that are trying to artificially meet the cap floor (i.e., contracts with high AAV cap hit but low real dollars out).

will probably need to sweeten the pot with a 1st round pick like the Marleau trade, and maybe even other assets given how Marner and his dad are terrible people.

Reminds me of Jeff Skinner

retain half if you have to but time to move him before you are eating 11 M next 4 years m

let go Dubas & Keefe and bring in Burke & Sullivan

What a joke of a "leader"

I can tell by posts who’s actually been a high level athlete or has been around high performance and people who have no idea about high performance or the mentality athletes need to have day to day. This is standard, this is what we teach athletes (I’m saying we because I work with high performance athletes daily). Move on to the next game, you have to let go of bad performances, no use dwelling on it. What more do you want him to say in his press conferences.

At this point a lot of you are just being assholes, I thought this was his best press conference to date. He was honest, he answered the question, direct quote “I need to create more second chance opportunities, I need to get to the dirty areas. We need to get guys in on shots” so to say that he isn’t willing to change is just a bullshit made up HF narrative. At this point I hope he leaves the leafs and wins multiple cups like Kessel did and we never see the light of day. The so called “fans” of this team make being a leaf fan worthless. Y’all suck.

Moving on to the next game is not the issue. It’s moving on and doing the same dam thing over and over. He has repeatedly said he didn’t need to do anything different.
Finally he says what he needs to do different……..maybe it has finally sunk in that he simply hasn’t been good enough.
Time will tell I guess

League cap flexibility now vs a few months ago is WAY lower, and Marner isn't helping his trade value.

The time to move him was in the offseason. Now you'd get significantly less than a few months ago.

THAT IS WHAT YOU TEACH HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETES. JFC

it is a standard theme that is taught so Marner is correct, you have to stay patient with your game. When you are a high performance athlete or pro athlete, You do NOT make drastic changes in your approach to the game… at least not in season. That is panic and it usually results in you being a less effective player. You can make minor adjustments like he talked about. But you don’t completely change your approach and how you play the game during the season.

he also isn’t lying. They are creating a ton of offense but they need to finish and make very fine adjustments to actually hit the target and bury in an open net.

please do some research on the art and science of coaching. I don’t want you to take that as an insult. But I’m seeing a lot of posters criticize Marner’s press conference but what he’s repeating is probably the conversations that he’s having with the coaching staff and the mental performance staff as well.

I take no insult. I was thinking more along the lines of his intensity and compete level.
I have watched him since he played in London. When he first became a Leaf he was electric and relentless with the puck. He hated to give it up. The last year or so he has not been like that.
One example from last night was one of his zone entries, he has the puck and simply skates along the boards until the defender rubs him into the boards and skates away with the puck.
No evasive movement at all. This happens way to many times.
He used to be dynamic on the PP…..now he is not.
Unfortunately for him and the fans the optics’s are that this level of play coincided with his signing his new contract.

Marner needs to be better, but we're into confirmation bias where a bunch of people hate him and now parse words, body language, and random on ice plays for things that aren't there. Media interviews are what they are, and trying to glean something from them about the player are pointless. If he says "We're confident, gotta move past it" he gets slammed, if he says "we have to be better, and learn from this" he gets slammed for being repetitive, if he says "it's unacceptable" he gets slammed.

Marner tries. The issue isn't effort, it's the opposite. He tries to do too much on his own. I don't know how, but someone needs to just calm him down. Playing down the line-up may help because he's got decent defensive instincts and uses his skill and stick well in those situations. Yes, he's overpaid, but he's put up more than a PPG the last three years, let's not get carried away with nonsense comparisons or retaining salary.

Nylander is rightly getting praised, but boy is it something else to see 3 years after the fact when Nylander was the whipping boy and Marner was the golden child.

Last night sucked. The best players on this team need to figure it out and get out of their heads. If they don't, the changes will be on them.

i agree with you. He used to be so electric. but I think the pressure has gotten to him. Even in his press conferences he’s not looking like he’s having fun. It’s just sad to see. I know fans don’t want to accept accountability but we kind of did this to him. Of course it’s on Marner to perform but the hate he took this summer was overload. & anyone who thinks that it’s not affecting him now is either a robot or doesn’t understand how emotions work. To constantly be cut down and you can’t escape it because of how much access fans have to players in terms of social media, he’s from the city. It’s just bad. We have not helped at all. I don’t think he reads HF Boards but I’m sure he has friends or team that reads message boards and tweets. As fans we need to be mindful of what we say. Even if you think it doesn’t impact it absolutely does.

I'm sorry but he didn't do himself any favours during his contract negotiations. This is where it all started to stem from. Now he's failing to live up to the over paid contract that he demanded, and people aren't happy. This is Mitch Marner problem (and the leafs) through and through. Jokes you would try and blame the fans for his performance

I’m disappointed at Marner the hockey player but not Marner the person, if that makes any sense. The real tragedy is that we have this young guy that was so happy to be a Leaf, probably a lifelong dream and that dream is turning to dust.
The reasons are many and varied. Some of it is his own doing some are just being chewed up by the machine.
For many fans it started with the contract negotiations and is spiraling from there. Part of it is the make up of the team, paying 50% of the cap on 4 similar forwards is a recipe for failure and the players are taking the heat for that.
I’m a Leaf fan first and foremost not individual player fan but where this mess ends is anyone’s guess

The blame goes on his agent, and his father, and also Dubas for caving to those "adults in the room" ridiculous recompense demands. Mitch is paying for THEIR greed and outright stupidity at creating insane expectations via the contract. He was basically a naive child sacrificed at the commercial altar by adults who should have known better.

How come these shysters aren't running interference for Mitch now that he needs protection until he figures this out?

And please don't exhort us fans to lay off. The aforementioned gang created the optics that Mitch is a saviour superstar. We bought in, spent our time and money on him, now we are justly reacting to the disappointment of the failure of those expectations.

He did it to himself. The way he went about his contract negotiations, he forever tarnished his career in Toronto. A lot of people, including myself, haven't liked him since. Don't get me wrong, if he can help bring a cup to Toronto then of course I want him on the team, but generally speaking, I'm not a fan of his anymore.

Furthermore, his performance in the playoffs was abysmal. That's unacceptable and when you're getting paid as much as he is, he deserves to be criticized. That's the nature of pro sports. If you don't want to be criticized, don't be an underperforming star player on a massive contract. He bent the Leafs over the table with his contract and he hasn't lived up to it. So I disagree that fans need to be easier on him. We are fans, he's the pro athlete, and while I understand he's still human, criticism comes with an $11 million contract, particularly when you don't perform.

For the life of me, I can't recall the last time he's impressed me or stood out. I didn't even notice he was playing yesterday, so by time he got benched, it didn't even click in. I don't think he's done anything positive this entire season.
