I like but not realistic because Mitch and JT are up in two years. Marner gonna start at 12m. If you are not prepared for that, you have 17 days to move him.
Marner has a NMC right now. The management will never get their heads (out of) or around moving someone in 17 days. It’s over.
Expect to pay Matthews/Marner both over 12 million.
They own the Leafs now.

Since they can't extend Mitch now all they can do is feel out his intentions. Best case is his agent communicates he will not be asking for more than Pastrnak money. He isn't quite worth that but he won't be taking a pay cut. Now if Matthews leaves and Mitch leads the club in production the way Pasta did this year thats a different story but I don't think he is likely to.

I know Mitch is apparently attached to the Leafs at the hip but does the club feel the same way? If they re-sign Matty and Willie would the team try to squeeze him in again? I kind of want 2 of the big 3 back with whoever is the the greediest getting dealt.

Who is the Habs replacing in the playoffs, or have u played out this delusion to the end yet?
Lol. WTF are you talking about? Where did I say that the Habs were going to make the playoffs? I am just saying hypothetically if they do and they play the Leafs, my money is on the Habs to beat them again because their team is more suited for playoff hockey.

I would let Matthews have a say in the outcome of the Marner decision.

Brad Treliving ultimatum to Auston ... You want the money or do you want Mitch, you decide?

If he wants max money then he can kiss his pal goodbye, and then its on him if Marner is traded or not.
&
If he takes less money on an NHL comparable contract then Mitch-a-roo can do so to.

I'm not sure why, but Matthews comes off as a tad bit spoiled to me. Something tells me if Bad said something like that to him it would rub him the wrong way and he'd leave town "why are you putting Marner's signing on me?" Is what I see him thinking. Sure it might be true, but I don't think theses guys would take kindly to questions like that.

Didn't he sign a few years ago with underwhelming numbers?

Yes, but that was a mistake by Leafs former GM.

If Treliving gave Marner a 6 year at $9.5 mil offer take it or leave it offer from the Leafs would Marner take it or say I'm moving on to test UFA waters to get more money.

Is the new GM obligated to double down or would moving him break that streak in trade or face him waking away for nothing?

Going to be interesting to see how all these core 4 contracts unfold and who stays and goes.

Which former GM?
Wasn't it Chiarelli?

Discussion start:
Claim: leafs can be competitive with the cheap contracts of players on Montreal and Ottawa.
Me: not too worried
You: should be worried
Me: how will they make the playoffs
You: didn't say they would
Me now: what the f*** are you talking about then?

Well his current contract is lower than his previous contract despite being in his prime.
His numbers didn’t really decrease from when he signed his second deal
I would hope so, he's had a pretty disappointing career until recently.
Not really a similar situation.

marner's deal is going to be easy ... he gets whatever is left from the cap after everyone else is signed.

If it isn't enough he can leave.

Leafs existed before and will after.

He is hardly a franchise savior.
He and Tavares are up at the same time, right?

“If they sneak into the playoffs“

Obviously I dont know how they will sneak into the playoffs. What I was saying was if they do and the Leafs have to play them, I would be worried.

Yes.

I think bringing up specific other teammates in Matthews’ contract negotiations would be offside on the part of the team. That’s actually a reasonable response. Sell Matthews on the concept of leaving a bit on the table for the team overall, yes, but telling him the deal he takes now will dictate whether Marner stays or goes is not only untrue, it’s manipulative

Naw, it is good to threaten people, everyone is always very understanding with threats.

I am sure a lot of people would want a higher number if threatened.

I agree and that really should be the basis then for Leafs current management to make a good business decisions on behalf of the organization on..

If you give Marner that opportunity in discussions with him and his agent, and they double down (which I think 98% of people would expect) that he is looking for a raise not paycut then the path becomes clearer that keeping him becomes simply making the original contract mistake larger.

Were the Leafs do have some leverage, is they know Marner wants to remain a Leaf as a local kid & with the switching of the GM the new guy is no longer obligated to the past GM evaluation and can provide his own.

Its a pipe dream to believe these players are going to be reasonable this time around.
And if that’s the case, then they need to be traded. It’s time to take a stand. If they really want to win here in Toronto, then they will take a hometown discount. If they want all they can get, they obviously don’t want to win nearly as much as they want the money. Enough is enough!

And Tavares isn't a Double Digits at that point.

Not an issue, other contracts will be done and then marner will be addressed unless he signs in '24, or does a sign and trade.
I don't see a need to re-up Tavares once his deal is up. He'll be two years older/slower, I don't see a need to sign a guy who'll be useless 5v5.

He doesn't fit in a bottom 6 checking role, let him walk.
