As much as this thread, the Matthews thread, and any other 'trade the core' thread may be to take part in, please know that they're simply gonna run it back.

They cannot help themselves with how much they overvalue their players, it shows in the contract and in the way they're coddled. It will take Shanny getting fired or one of the core leaving as UFAs for a change.

Unfortunately I think you are right……they must revel in failure

As of today, I will say they most likely will run it back.
You can't make a trade for the sake of a trade.

I do think if there is/are good hockey deals out there, one or two of the core 4 will be move though.

There are lots of teams that don't make the playoffs and have no chance at winning the Cup year after year. The thing that they all have in common is none of them have Matthews or Marner.
They are the bottom half of the league however the idea of having Marner and Matthews is to succeed but they are not necessary for that end as evidenced by the teams that go further then us every year.
Far to many posters thing they are mandatory for Leaf success

That's a much more reasonable post than the absolute statement I was responding to. I agree with all of this.

It's a shame we gave Tavares NMC ( we had to - man took a discount), otherwise trading Marner and JT would be the way.

Look. You can say this and I could name Patrick Kane to which you would say Marner didn't win cup to which I would say neither did Pasta and there goes the goals vs assists argument substituted for the most convenient excuses available to justify why a 2x 1st team all star, top point producer on a top team should effectively be paid far less than he was. The made up formulas that are exposed here make zero sense.
Pretending that Marners on ice impact is not significant in the league is totally ridiculous.
Gaudreau lead the league in ES scoring and got $9.75M x 7

Let's talk about this on-ice impact some more please. Because leading the league in ES scoring seems like more on-ice impact than Marner has ever provided.

And you're right, let's not touch Kane. The 2nd contract he signed compared to Marner's shouldn't be compared at all - Kane's deal was far more team friendly. Him winning 3 cups obviously factored into his 3rd one.

Marner could fix his own problem by taking a pay-cut on his next deal to stay.

If Matthews is already re-signed at this time and committed long term, and if Marner a local Ontario kid does not want to leave the Leafs then bringing his salary down and in line with the market giving Toronto a credit on his current deal that overpaid him by $2-3 mil should be an option. At the time a year prior he was asking for the Draisatil deal at 8 X $8.5 mil and even at that rate and comparing that directly to the player that Leon has become and rate at which he produces would still leave questions if this is a fair comparable for Mitch all things considered.

Something like 6 years at $9.5 mil (matching Kucherov, Rantanen etc who returned Cups at that rate) or even more current Matthew Tkachuk playing in the SCF and among the playoff scoring leaders with 5 GWG in the playoffs just signed for 8 years at $9.5 mil. Marner hasn't even earned that amount compared on those players playoff returns at that price point.

Trading isn't the only option on the table as market correction down in-line with the rest of the NHL also a possibilty to keep the gang together, but create more cap space to build around them.
If Marner would do this, he would change a lot of opinions thats for sure and I would certainly be impressed, but there is no chance in hell he does that, zilch, nada, no way no how.

I understand that your embellishments are an effort to not be boring, but it's simply not true that 7 consecutive losses equate to odds of winning that are practically zero.
It's not the regular season record, it's the style of play that doesn't give any indication that they'll someday snap out of it. They don't have a killer instinct, they're not all in. Go listen to the ROR interview on Overdrive, he himself said the players could have done more.

You're better off not getting your hopes up, enjoying the regular season success, and the eventual playoff ass kicking.

First on Kane...their cap % for their RFA contracts weren't far and Marner outperformed Kane.
Secondly...MM vs JG...any questions?

that team was led by Carey Price, Suzuki and Caufield have led them to the worst and 5th worst record in the league
......... And again. They beat the Leafs in the playoffs. So, what does that say about the Leafs? Especially considering that they blew a 3-1 lead to them.

GAR and xGAR? Why am I supposed to care about that stat? Were those some of the same stats that said Timo Meier > Marner a few years back?
