The reality is that we just cannot stay competitive when our divisional rivals are locking up players like Caufield, Stutzle, Norris, Tkachuk, Suzuki for significantly cheaper for a similar game impact. We can't be 30-40% higher in salary for a 10% better player, and expect to match up with these teams elsewhere in our lineups.
To put it another way to the "We need superstars" people. Ask them if they think we can be competitive with a cap that is 30% less than the league and see what they say. You make a great point.

Marner was never going to get 8.5mm unless they signed a year earlier. Even in retrospect, the last 4 years, he is 7th in the league in scoring, has 2 1st team all Stars and is a selke finalist. This take is brutal.
Yup he's a great regular season player, I hear they even might make a statue in his honor for that. :)

He’s their best player, but he‘s not designed for the playoffs. Maybe if he had some help

I would let Matthews have a say in the outcome of the Marner decision.

Brad Treliving ultimatum to Auston ... You want the money or do you want Mitch, you decide?

If he wants max money then he can kiss his pal goodbye, and then its on him if Marner is traded or not.
&
If he takes less money on an NHL comparable contract then Mitch-a-roo can do so to.

The funniest thing is Clark in his profile. I don't know why it just makes me laugh considering the two players are so diametrically opposed. If Mitch played in the PO with the same determination that he defends him, we'd be in the cup finals.

All three of them need to.
Completely agree. People say it took Yzerman so many years to win, but he was told by the greatest coach ever to change or go.
Ovi and the Capitals were told by Trotz to change. What you do with the puck is your way, what you do without it is mine.

If these four remain this will fall on Shanny. He will be known as the guy who protected his job by not rocking the boat, ensuring the failure of the team to coddle yet another entitled group in Toronto.

This team will not win a Cup.with Marner on this roster. Maybe if the Core Four were making half of what they make, but definitely not with their skillset and salaries.

The coddling for decades has ensured this franchise is the laughing stock of losing in professional sports. A country club for the yacht owners who never win the annual yacht race.

lol the people aggressively in the "trade" camp are going to be the same ones crying and whining on this board for years about how much they hate the return and how we should have kept him (because most of you are like that).
I am not 100% in the “aggressively trade” group. But, I understand where they’re coming from.

Its been 7 years with this core and they’ve won 1 (ONE!!!) playoff round.

Let’s not pretend that they’ve knocked on the door to the Stanley cup at any point in that timespan.

I'm torn and I voted "other". Clearly his skills are useful in the Reg. Season: Playmaking, PP, and PK. Yet he gets a lot slower, smaller, and ineffective in the playoffs. Matthews can be guilty of the same issue. The thing is that Matthews' 2-way skills are still there in the Playoffs, and still takes faceoffs. Given time and space Matthews can still kill you if given the chance. Marner doesn't have as much "nose for the net".

I doubt I'm contributing much here. I'm so lucky I don't have to be the one who decides.

It’s not their fault theyre not knocking on the door. It’s not the type of players they are. For them to succeed they need more talent on the back end and some natural leaders around them.

Marner gets us comfortably into the playoffs via his regular season work, but has limited value once in a playoff series where he's targeted. I have a difficult time imagining him maturing to the point where he's taking control of series like the VGK, FLA one, so it's a judgment call whether you think he'll actually be an impact playoff player ever in his career or if you need a supporting cast that can carry him through.

11games this year

MM 3-11 14 points +7 and 18 hits
AM 5-6 11 points +3 and 38 hits
WN 4-6. 10 points -4 and 3 hits
JT 4-4. 8 points -1 and 26 hits

And posters on here think marner is the problem lol

100 per cent matthews is our problem
He is our highest paid player
He is anointed as our best player.
He may not be the captain but everyone
Looks to him as being the best player to lead us.

Playoff failure all 7 years is on him more than any others. Cant score the big goal when needed and cant take the team on his back like other top players in the league.

I don't care about MM point totals. He can't score when you need it.

Matthews is probably responsible for our failure but he got the potential to score 20 in playoffs and win you SC.

Can you say the same about Marner?
