Mirtle says they need to get it done soon so they know what their needs are going into FA. I just hope they do not blow it like they did with Kadri.

Sharks won't be making the playoffs soon so he can help fill the arena for them until they can ice an NHL team.

San Jose would be a good landing spot. Live in California for half a year at a ridiculous salary and take the summers off. What's not to like?

Now the least Kyle could do is return the favor and fish Marner out of here. It's his boy after all.
He's put the Pens in cap hell with his acquisition of EK. No chance to bring in Marner unless Leafs retain 50% this year and they move off their big 3 the following year.

Exactly, he got paid for what was anticipated he would become as a player and offensive force. Instead, he stagnated and remained the same 90-99 point winger with the same muffin shot and no improvement on his skating speed or physical strength, so in reality he did not live up to the terms of his contract, especially if you factor in his wilting under pressure come playoff time.

Anyone willing to give him $12m+ can have him, for free.
I just hope we can get some prospects/picks for him and use that $11m to shore up the rest of the lineup.

Let me double down on your point of having him for Free after this next season.

Here is a list of the top UFA players after 2024-25.

Who wouldn't rather see Marner (if you can't trade him) simply walk away and recapture his $10.9 mil, and offer that to Mika Rantanen or Leon Draisailt as his replacements (if available), if you're looking at investing $12 mil or more in a player?
That would be a wise contract investment to expect a great return on your investment come playoff time, with proven playoff warriors worth every penny of that +$12 mil contract. :stanley:

Anyone without your hand raised is clearly just a Marner fan, and not focused on playoff productivity, if re-signing Marner for $12 mil + is your choice. IMHO

True dat. It ain't Kyle until he f***s up the cap by bringing in an unnecessary high priced player.

Rantanen likely won't be available... It's a long-winded post for a scenario that has almost no chance of happening.

They have a few years left until they rebuild... it is amazing how few people understand the context of that move... Karlsson was one of their best players last year and can be flipped at 50% for a decent return if they enter the rebuild before his contract is done.

Having said this... the obsessed Dubas people like yourself should probably go to the Pens board... it is a weird obsession and this is a Marner thread.

I'd rather see that $11 million spent on a Christmas bonus for Shanahan for the next 8 years. Which is my way of saying Mitch needs to get the hell out.

It's pretty evident there are many here that are blinded by their froth over Marner and don't really understand much of how the league works.

It's easier just to repeat the same stupid daily takes than it is to to formulate something meaningful.
Why yes, yes it is..... The Marner fan club is truly blinded.

I'm with you, if there's 1 well known gullible (sucker born every minute) GM out there, then Treliving should be calling Pittsburgh for his best return for Marner at the top of his to-do shopping list.

KD would have no problem giving Marner everything he wanted in his next contract, and even promise him he could ride shotgun to Sidney Crosby to ensure Marner productivity didn't drop. Getting Mitch to waive his NMC for this would be like taking candy from a baby.

There wouldn't be an easier mark, bar none out there, for BT to improve the Leafs at the expense of.

What do the Pens have to offer that would satisfy the Leafs?

As long as he stays away from Zito this time... Would suck if he ruined 2 franchises.

One more chance at the Cup with Crosby/Malkin and the brilliant Dubas addition of Karlsson for Marner @ 50% retention, all for draft picks that he doesn't really need. Just pretend its broken back Foligno, Marleau, or any of the others.

The more amazing thing is that the Leafs gave him a NMC for the last TWO years of his deal. Matthews didn't get that.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I think the difference is players become eligible for NMC’s at 25 or 26. So the Marner deal overlapped with 2 of those years eligible whereas Matthews’ deal was one year shorter.

Willie only had a NMC his last year. I wonder if Dubas purposely gave Marner and Nylander NMCs for the last year of his deal with the Leafs. It sure smells that way. What a fool.

You're probably right, these good and highly productive playoff performers like Rantanen and Draisiatl will likely receive new contracts from their current teams, because they EARNED them on merit, and as such their own teams have every desire to retain them, and pay them for their vital contributions to team playoff success.

Rantanen already has a Cup and Draisaitl is competing for one as we speak now, and are among the highest producing playoff performers. Everybody would want them on their teams.

Our Leafs are on the opposite spectrum and at a point where they want out of Cap Hell, and willing to part with an unproductive, disappearing playoff performer to change the dynamics of the team and try and improve on their own playoff aspirations of success. Losing in round #1 over and over and over seems to have finally reached its breaking point with ownership/management.

Leafs management have the same goal of wanting to compete for the Cup, unfortunately dealing from a position of weakness where moving out player(s) instead of keeping him/them seems to be current objective to reach the same finishing point but complicated by NMC landmines left by BT predecessor to navigate through.

That article Simmonds wrote yesterday titled "Leafs won't ask Marner to waive unless it's the right return" is basically just asking teams to not lowball and to come prepared with a decent trade and not to waste our time

Nothing wrong with this approach. Why ask him to waive for a 1st and B prospect.
When the time is right, you can ask him and let him know the other team is willing to meet his contract demands.

Well I would have started with their 1st from 2024 entry draft #14 overall, but of course Dubas :dunce:gave that foolishly away already to bring in Eric Karlsson and also miss the playoffs in the process.

So then It would have to be a 2025 1st round pick instead (which then wouldn't put pressure on competing a deal prior to this years draft).

Then I would ask for a top prospect (Pens pool is shallow) but either and in this order.

1718033177689.png
1718033230946.png

along with a roster player like 28 year old, 6'-3" Dman Marcuss Pettersson who caries a $4,025,175 cap hit. Who finished with a +28 +/- on a non playoff Pens team.

1718033557340.png

and I get him to toss in the rights to pending UFA Alex Nedeljkovic who is a 28 year old goaltender, who is coming off a $1,500,000 contract and played the 18 games straight for the Pens and almost clawed them into the playoffs while the massive 5 X 5.375 mil contract Dubas gave Tristan Jarry sat and watched.

1718034381997.png

So there you have it 1st round pick 2025 + either [Brayden Yager or Owen Pickering] + Marcus Pettersson + rights to pending UFA
Alex Nedeljkovic (to re-sign for reasonable amount) .
