If the Leafs really wanted to create some cap flexibility and change the makeup of the team, they should've looked at moving on from Rielly, not re-signing him to a raise.

He is the actual worst player defensively on the club.

Because comparing the current Leafs cap troubles to a pre-cap dynasty makes so much sense...

Especially since that Red Wings team lost in the Conference Finals to Gretzky's Oilers only 4yrs into Yzerman's career...
Point was to not trade an elite young talent because of early playoff failures. Trading Marner isn't the answer. They're still a top 5-10 team in the league with the current roster, management just needs to get them stable goaltending and another top 4 D. The core is fine. If we're talking salary and they want to move someone, they should ask Tavares to waive his NTC and make a trade. That contract is looking ugly as hell right now.

His contract is front loaded, he's owed like $16 million for his final three years in actual cash after July 1st. Less than $6 million a year for a 90+ point player in his prime, it definitely works for teams with internal caps.

It would be hilarious if a cheap team traded for him after July 1 when his $7.2m bonus is paid.

Then paid him his regular $750k salary for the season.

Then traded him again before his next $7.2m bonus and NMC kicked in on July 1.

You could actually get him for less than $10K a game and sell some tickets somewhere for a season; though I'm not sure fans anywhere will be kicking the door down to see Marner.

The issue with that deal (I'd think) is that there's no way Marner produces as much on a bottom feeder, so you might be giving up a haul to get out of paying that last $16m. But owners are pretty stupid so I could see Melnyk or Pagula doing something like that.

Which Detroit did when they traded Primeau. Its a gamble but sometimes you have to gamble to win. Now Marner is better than what Primeau was but hes also worse than what Yzerman was.

Not saying trading Marner is the solution but you're not gonna be able to trade Tavares either.

As for stable goaltending and a top-4 D I guess you have to hope for the prospects to shine there for you cant afford to pay for both.

Just for fun, Oilers miss the playoffs and McDavid wants out :

Marner + 1st 2022 + 1st 2023 + Knies

For

McDavid
McDavid will be coming home once he is a UFA. Book it. 100%. No need to trade for him. Tavares contract expires 1 year before McDavid’s. It is already planned. Matthews and McDavid will team up in T.O

Toronto will keep Marner. Nylander will leave though.

I'd be looking at moving JT or Willie but not Marner. Besides, his cap hit is just too big given a flat cap and the return would never justify moving him.

I'd rather have a conversation with JT and see if it's possible to move him first

Please give us a sample of how you would begin that conversation already knowing the Leafs are his favorite team and Aryne wants him close to home .

Then I can use your answer to try and get my mother in law out of my house . Stay safe

I don't think Matthews will sign that short of a deal in Arizona to make coming back possible, maybe after?

Now that you have the core, you have to keep trying to shuffle the support guys and hope for a hot goalie and good matchups.

You’ll never get enough value from trading any of your top four forwards.

I think if he leaves the Oilers, he'll want to go to a team who gets them further than the Oilers in playoffs. Sorry that was too easy.

What Tavares did is pretty rare though. I think he'll go where the money is. Will be fun to watch when the time comes.

I would expect a three quarters for a dollar type trade, similar to the Eichel return. Tuch+Krebs+1st.

LA seems to be the most likely landing spot if he were traded. Rapport with Blake, out of conference, lots of cap space and need to bridge the age gap between the Kopitar generation and the Byfield generation.

Something like Kempe/Iafallo+Turcotte/Kaliyev+1st as a base
Don't think he's a good fit for LA. Kings need size & shooters. Plus Marner's contract is one year longer than Mathews & would make taking a run at him very difficult from a cap perspective.

No idea what an acceptable package that works for both teams would look like, but I’d love him on Chicago. We desperately need a high-end forward and will have a ton of cap room.

Wouldn't mind having him, he's a really good player. No way in hell the Flames can afford him though without sending out enough players that they would be a worse team.

Cant see it. Why would he agree to a trade? Also Leafs would have to retain.
He'd likely not waive but it's worth the try. I think this is something a new management group can ask him considering they're not tied to him like Dubas is. Have an honest conversation saying this isn't working out like we expected and see if he'd be open to potentially moving on.

Marner has something very in common with the big 5 in Kucherov, McDavid, Matthews, Mackinnon and Draisital, in that those 5 players (and Marner) are the only 6 players in the entire league who are career point per game and under the age of 30.

Yah. Of course it doesnt hurt to ask. None of us really know what JT would or wouldnt be ok with. If he was being traded to Vegas, Florida, Tampa maybe he would say yes. The problem is I dont see how any of the really good teams could make the cap work.
