He's the clear definition of the entitled brat. The Leafs organization and Paul Marner rewarded that entitled behaviour so bad on them, but at one point, it's up to the actual player to realize his deficiencies and learn to become motivated to always become a better version of themselves. Otherwise, he will never reach his potential ceiling. Considering his talent, that's a criminal waste.I would assume the real issue with his contract negotiation wasn’t money but more of a pride issue.
Marner saw the organization play hardball on Nylander and then roll out the red carpet for Auston Matthews’ extension like the Prince of Gotham. And in his mind his 94 point season and being hometown boy made him every bit the franchise player the Leafs were treating Matthews as. I think that false equivalency based on regular season points is what catapulted Marner from the Aho, Barzal, Rantanen and Point grouping to more of a McDavid, Matthews, Eichel salary bracket.
As skilled as Mitch is, his talent level is unevenly distributed and he doesn’t have a lot of the maturity, confidence and killer instinct a lot of other superstars have to thrive in these big moments. What’s worrisome is he doesn’t seem to have really worked on his shooting or physical strength over the past 5 years. Up to him to prove us wrong.
I have been pretty harsh on Marner more than any other Leaf simply because of his stark refusal to learn from his mistakes. I'm hoping that Marner can finally elevate himself in today's game, but forgive me if I roll my eyes in disbelief.
