Carolina just dumped Calvin De Haan and his $4.55m cap hit to Chi for prospects....$24.6m free now.
Maybe they snagged our 1st rounder because they will be sending us their next 4? Which they have available btw...
The plot thickens.

I don't believe there will be an OS, but that would be mastermind level of Canes if they did OS Marner.

The fact they they got our 1st so Leafs couldn't counter OS Aho lol.

I would be thoroughly impressed lol...

They offered Aho 6M apparently, now does that seem like a team that's going to throw 11M+ at Marner?

I've got doubts

It doesn't. Just because a better player than Marner signed a contract doesn't mean that Marner must sign the same.

With the attitude of the Marner's the team will be better off without them.

You mean the attitude that says the guy with more points, who plays in every situation and who isn't injury prone is better?

And what's wrong with believing in yourself?

You're channeling your frustration in the wrong direction.

Reports were he was offered top dollar. If he wants to be overpaid then he can do so elsewhere.

The Leafs can actually counter, theres a loophole (apparently) in the cba that allows you to use 4 1sts starting with the following season. So they'd be giving up 2021-24 1sts instead of 2020-23 ones.

Edit: they're also allegedly trying to sign Aho for 6x8 mil lol. Think they're still on a budget

I don't think anyone who sees this from all angles thinks it's wise to trade marner.

The Marleau move is proof. If you plan to trade marner for picks, you can keep your pick.

What do you mean trade Marner for picks, you mean in the way of OS?

If yes then I agree. Mind you, I don't see an OS coming, so the picks wouldn't come into play if he doesn't get an OS, it would be an actual trade.

Whether people think it's wise to trade Marner or not isn't really my point though, it can be used as leverage but in this case it can't if you don't believe Dubas would have the stomach for that.

Marner isn't going out to brave the local supermarket for the best Thanksgiving turkey he can find while anticipating a scuffle at the checkout. He and his agent are negotiating his annual Lotto 6/49 compensation. Whether it's $9M a year or $11,161,345M a year, standing up to say, "can you blame the guy for wanting what's best for him and his family" is intellectual oblivion.

Marner produced 95 point pace with Kadri and Marleau. Not sure what point you’re trying to make exactly...
That Kadri and Marleau were way better performers than what Matthews had to play with?

You might be the only one who is "not sure of the point".....

Ah ok, didn't know of such loophole.

Yeah OS from Canes is a joke. Marner ain't taking a discount, and it would sabotage Aho's contract negotiation if his camp got a HINT that Canes will OS Marner.

Neither did I, but saw a couple hockey writers discussing it on Twitter today. Dont think it's common knowledge

Good point. I guess we will see if he gets offered more. But the 11 x 8 is a pretty damn good offer.

$11M x 8 was not offered. That comes from a Friedman quote:

"My belief is that the leafs have told Mitch Marner that if he wants the big number - like 11 or whatever it is - they want him to go to 8 years, and I think that at this point in time Mitch Marner is not prepared to do that."

The context is that he thinks Marner doesn't want an 8 year contract. The Leafs have not officially offered Marner anything. Not the wording Friedman used. "My belief" and "I think", not "sources say". Toronto Media at its finest, doing whatever it takes to generate those clicks, and Toronto fans being Toronto fans believing it as absolute truth and freaking out over it.

Reportedly. I get what ur saying. I didn’t mean it or take it as official. I shoulda have used original quote as it’s was a belief. I’m not so good with knowing how to add the attachments.

I agree Marner is looking at five years max. I don’t think he deserves Mathews contract. In fact Mathews didn’t deserve that contract either but he is closer to it than Marner for all the reasons stated on multiple threads
