@MyBudJT curious about your opinion. do you think Rantanen deserves more or less than Marner?

I DOnt watch a lot of Colorado, but I did benefit from having Rantanen (and Marner) in my hockey pool! Prior to the season, I would have suggested Rantanen deserved more. Now I think it is Less.

I think Rantanen probably benefited more playing with Landeskog and MacKinnon, than Marner did with Tavares and Hyman.

Without actually looking at numbers, I’d expect Rantanen also benefited more on the PP and with 2nd assists.

Has anyone come up with an updated list of teams that could offer sheet him? Like teams that have the 4 first rounders and the cap space? Last one I saw, the first rounders had the potential to be very high based on how they finished last year. It would be delicious to see him run for the money and see him floundering around at the bottom of the league while the Leafs take the picks and turn them into a solid team

Leafs $10 mil X 8 years vs Marner/Ferris $10.5 mil X 5 is miles apart is these numbers being reported are accurate.

3 years extra UFA years being bought at less money than selling off just 1 is huge.

What term ? Dubas wants 8 and Mitch wants 5.
I can’t solve all the problems can I, lol.
And that’s a good question. I don’t see Marner wanting to go longer than Matthews/Nylander. Is the new wave ELC, 2nd big contract right to UFA?

I feel like we'd be fine doing 6 years, even 4, but 5 is out of the question.

The whole offer sheet bluff by Ferris is a complete joke.

List of teams that have their next 4 firsts, are willing to give them up, and want to pay Marner 10.5+M for a 5 year deal.

CJ says on the 31 thoughts podcast that he doesn't think an offer sheet on Marner will happen. Thinks on a scale of 1 to 10, Leaf fans should be at a 3, which surprised Friedman

There was a lot of chatter last summer that Mitch wanted to bet on himself. If you think about it too it makes complete sense. He had 2 seasons at opposite ends of the 60s, but that doesn't tell the story of the way he ended that second season. The pace he put up in the last 33 with Kadri/Marleau and also the playoffs. He wasn't gonna get paid as if he'd now arrived, he was gonna get paid on the overall 2 year body of work. Then we sign Tavares July 1. There just never was any incentive for Marner to sign before playing this year out and doing what he believe he could do, and ultimately did.

This is imo the reality of the situation Dubas found himself in with negotiating with Marner.

This is precisely what happened. I personally think Dubas should have seen it coming and accepted whatever ridiculous deal they were offered that now seems like a bargain last summer. The writing was on the wall with where these contracts were going after the Eichel and Draisaitl deals. I'm not trying to dump on Dubas but he was sold to us as some type of new age wunderkind. Wasn't there an analysis that showed this would happen? Caveat: I understand the complications it would have created trying to sign Nylander after caving to Marner.

Start shopping him. If there is a deal to be had it needs to be done before July 1st. I would gladly take a #1/#2 RHD or 3 firsts and a second or something equivalent and have some money to go shopping on July 1st.

As it stands now, Dubas does not have much wiggle room to improve the team further this year.

Friedman says he doesn't think Marner and Marner's camp were happy with Dubas' comments about not automatically matching an offer sheet.

CJ says Marner's camp does felt slighted about the bonuses on the ELC stuff with Lou, and the lack of ice time in his first year. CJ says on some level, this is what is driving the Marner's camp hard negotiation

They don't necessarily have to give up picks, a deal could be worked out.

** I don't think it will come to this either but it's not impossible.
