"How dare they think they know better" while accidentally admitting that they knew better.

Is there any other sport that features teams stubbornly f***ing themselves over just to spite their own fans? There's Rutherford, there's the whole MacDonald thing (and basically every single bad acquisition), there's Edmonton's existence in general.

It’s hard to really feel bad for those guys (MacDonald & Johnson) because they’re making a lot of money they don’t really deserve but it does paint a huge target on their on their back.

Like I’m sure MacDonald probably didn’t even care about taking a pay cut on the buyout this past year to just get out of here towards the end.

I would take virtanen on this team easily if he could be aquired for cheap/he wasn't looking for a large contract. He's at least an upgrade over most of the bottom 6 currently in the lineup.

Rutherford is hilarious. The man ALWAYS gets his guy. If he's rumored to be in on a player, he will acquire that player. Carolina was in on Liles back when he was still with Colorado. He wound up going to the Leafs, but three years later JR trades Tim Gleason to acquire him. (Side note: Gleason played half a season with the Leafs, was bought out and immediately signed again by Rutherford. Gleason was also one of the players JR acquired when he traded JMFJ to the Kings).

But yeah, JMFJ refuses to sign with Carolina, gets traded. JR waits 12 years and eventually is able to sign his guy with a different team.

JR. ALWAYS. GETS. HIS. GUY.

This is amazing. Borderline obsessive.

Wait till I get going!

He also loves recycling players, as I touched on above.

The summer after Carolina won the cup, he trades Vasicek for Scott Walker. Six months later he trades Eric Belanger (The other player he acquired in the JMFJ trade, btw) to get Vasicek back.

He acquired Joe Corvo THREE TIMES. JOE CORVO. He traded Corey Stillman and Mike Commodore for Corvo and Patrick Eaves. (Side note: he reacquired Stillman three years later in a deadline deal). Eventually Corvo is traded to Washington in a deal at the deadline. Re-signed by JR that offseason on a two year deal. He played one year of that deal and was traded to Boston. He played the year with Boston and was re-signed by JR that offseason.

Erik Cole was traded to Edmonton for Philly legend Joni Pitkanen one offseason. That trade deadline JR facilitates a three way deal that sends Philly legend Justin Williams to the Kings, Patrick O'Sullivan to Edmonton, and brings Cole back to the Canes. (Side note: O'Sullivan was signed as an UFA the following offseason).

He traded for Anton Babchuk who went to Russia twice and returned to sign a new contract with Carolina both times.

He signed Matt Cullen to a one year deal when we won the cup. Cullen walked in free agency, signed with the Rangers, played one season with them and was reacquired by JR the next offseason. Five years later JR was the Penguins GM and signed him there.

In 2007 he drafted Brandon Sutter in the first round, and in the few years following that, he drafted or traded for 2-3 more Sutters.

Having already acquired Jared Staal from the Coyotes, he picked up Jordan Staal from the Penguins, and at the end of that season called up Jared from the AHL just so the three brothers could get announced as the starting lineup in a couple of meaningless games in a lost season. (Side note: Jared wound up playing hockey professionally in Scotland, couldn't hack it there and is now retired as far as I can tell)

I typed all this up just so you people can appreciate what I mean when I say JR ALWAYS GETS HIS GUY

Just know it’s nowhere near comprehensive.

I forgot about JR bringing back Aaron Ward during the 2009 offseason for ‘toughness and experience’. (side note: the canes defeated the Bruins/Ward in game 7 overtime in 2009. During the series Ward was on the ice for an overtime goal against in game 3 and got his lights punched out by Scott walker in game 6). I also forgot about him picking up Thomas Kaberle a couple years after his brother Frantisek moved on from the team.

And I didn’t even get into the guys who had a good game or shift against Carolina and were afterwords (Tim Brent, Steve Goertzen, and like 1/4 of the 06 Edmonton Oilers-Samsonov/Dvorak/Bergeron/Spacek/Raffi Torres on a PTO)

That’s also not even touching him identifying a player to pick up them paying way too much to do so. His first ever trade as the gm of the Whalers way back in the day was three first round picks for glen wesley (side note: one of those picks wound up being Samsonov, it all loops back in on itself, man).
