I can't believe I'm saying this, but here we are. If the Flyers are dead set on a relatively quick turnaround, a monster Pettersson offer sheet next summer makes some sense.

Look, I'm not advocating for it. I think they need to go long term. I'm just saying that it's one of the few players in the league where you can give up 4 1sts and talk yourself into believing it will work out.

McDavid apparently passed up a deal that would have had him paid like $1.5-2M more a year. He took those savings for the team & their GM’s used that money to sign mid & low tier players to bloated contracts.

Just today we saw the effects of that with them being unable to sign Bouchard to something greater than a two year bridge deal even if they wanted to.
At least the Flyers don't do that.

Oh shit

Sure, why the f*** not. We are overdue for some carnage

Offersheets need to be used more.

Holmgren Intensifies

Something to keep in mind with the Matthews contract.
It's true, but in Crosby's case, the $8.7m on his first contract was also sky-high in terms of Cap Hit %. 17.3% under the current $83.5m cap hit = AAV of $14,442,346.

It also took him straight to UFA after only five years.... kind of like this Matthews deal.

I'm no Ratcliffe fan, but it was stupid that he wasn't given even half an honest chance after he didn't fully suck in his appearance the year before. I do remember being assured he would be on the opening roster, of course.
I felt the same way. He looked like he had potential as a bottom 6 in his short stint in 21-22. Definitely deserved a longer look next season. But we all know it's more important to play players like Deslauriers, MacEwen, Brown, Lemieux, Bellows, etc...

You loved him and called him a UNICORN.....just like you loved UNICORN Myers.

Oh, and said that guys that size just take longer.
They do take longer, but at some point longer becomes forever.
I'm come to accept that any player above 6'4 is a long shot, probably b/c it's harder to puck handle and lateral agility on skates is harder when you're that big.
There are always exceptions, but same with players smaller than say 5'10 180, odds are against you.

He didn't blow everyone away in practice a few months later so obviously that should cancel out actual NHL play

This is up there with the "Ghost is bad because slapshots are obsolete and nobody uses them anymore" take

I never cared for Ratcliffe, but if you want to defend Flyers development, a player instantly multiplying his AHL production by 5x after a trade isn’t a ringing endorsement.

This is where I need to say that it doesn’t always matter what a player becomes. What matters is building or maintaining value in the present. You can be skeptical of a player and still do that, especially in the AHL. But Fletcher called Ratcliffe an untouchable prospect upon his entering the professional ranks. If that’s your internal valuing, there’s no way you should let his value depreciate to “future considerations.” And then see a production spike.

No mistakes though.

I was always understood that Ratcliff’s skating is what will hold him back from being a effective NHL player

Funnily enough, if you went back in time you'd see his three best attributes identified as: power forward, plus shooter, good skater for his size. All of which were dubious then projecting to the NHL.

I could write a term paper on skating being the most misunderstood part of skill evaluation. That Robertson's skating was concurrently (and questionably) maligned could form my thesis.

Was Ratcliffe a decent mover at 6'6? Sure, superficially, even if it was never more than above average. Ratcliffe is a better pure skater than Foerster, for example. But not in any effective way; he'd skate a lot and do little. He skated in straight lines, with little lane creativity, and was bad at skating with the puck -- he noticeably had choppy feel and struggles 1v1. He was always a mediocre passer too. How do you transition play like that? You can't. He just didn't have to work for contested entries in the OHL. He was always too upright, especially in tight, with bad balance and more choppy puck handling, even if his feet were decently quick. There goes short area work. It was always about skill and functionality.

Or maybe it was just a SSS fluke, given that Nashville let him walk after watching him play for a month.
