Not sure but I hope the cap doesn’t go up significantly after this season.

Stamkos is a UFA at seasons end as well, thing could get interesting.
It's supposed to

Why would the Flyers want Stamkos? Rebuilding teams don't go for older players with inflated contracts on the downside of the aging curve.

Edmonton is gonna be a mess in two years cap wise thanks to Holland. Bouchard & Draisaitl coming up for deals at the same time.

Even if the cap goes up to like $90M+ or whatever they’re speculating. These guys are gonna eat that space up between the two of them. They really don’t have anything big coming off the books in that time either.

Kyle Dubas is a moron. Again!

It's almost like Matthews can dictate what contract he wants. He will be 30 signing his next contract, and I'd wager that's when he goes max term. He's maximizing his annual salary now, while still getting top dollar on his next contract with a likely higher cap. If he signs 8 years now, he's not getting this type of AAV at age 34. Hockey culture is in shambles -- and if I was a Leafs fan, I'd much prefer MacKinnon's deal -- but he's maximizing his earning potential.

Draisaitl signed his contract in 2017 coming off a 77 point season. MacDavid signed in 2017. MacKinnon is the direct comparison.

Matthews true value is probably something like 16 million. The NHL underpays its best players and relative to that, overpays their middling players. It's a dumb league. Flyers management isn't totally on an island by being unhealthily obsessed with Laughton.

This. It's basically impossible to overpay the truly elite. Will the league ever adjust?

Cap%, not AAV. I'm begging. It's lower than McDavid even after cap stagnation.

Matthews came in at 15.87%. McDavid signed for 16.67% and everyone laughed that he didn't take enough. MacKinnon's over 14. So is Panarin. Pastrnak's just under. So is Marner. Feels about right on the in practice scale.

Huh?

He only got a 1.6 million dollar raise. So they can't sign a Hathaway and instead play an ELC instead. Seems like a great plan.

McDavid apparently passed up a deal that would have had him paid like $1.5-2M more a year. He took those savings for the team & their GM’s used that money to sign mid & low tier players to bloated contracts.

Just today we saw the effects of that with them being unable to sign Bouchard to something greater than a two year bridge deal even if they wanted to.
