Much as I believe Niskanen was a superior player and had his best case year (singular) with the Flyers…..Gudas is doing this 5 years later. And you can’t divorce the colossally bad Risto/TDA trades in trying to bandaid Niskanen’s retirement.

isnt it weird how players leave the Flyers and go on to have better results everywhere else..

very strange. 🤣🤣🤣

And very rare. Ghost has been a 3rd pair D-man on every team but Arizona. Has never played as well as he did for his first few seasons in Philly.
Gudas has been a 3rd pair D-man most of his career since leaving Philly, very good in that role, but not good enough to be promoted without injury.
NAK is on his 4th team in 4 years.
Myers is on the AHL shuttle, Patrick is pretty much gone, etc.

The bad period was a couple decades ago when they let Sharp, Justin Williams and Seidenberg walk for peanuts.

The problem isn't good talent leaving, it's the lack of good talent, period.

No he hasn't been a 3rd paring d-man every team. This image is Gostibehere's icetime (all situations) throughout his career.

And as ES, this is the first year he's averaging less than 2nd pairing minutes in his entire career.

The image below is his sG model from hockey viz.

Ghost has been a phenomenally performing defenseman over the majority of his career. When he's on the ice, his team is generally better.

Trading Buchnevich for a low 2nd and a 4th liner (who was traded back to St. Louis!) to free up cap space for Goodrow and Reaves has to be up there with the worst sequences of moves in recent memory. The worst? Obviously, The Ristolainen Sequence (my 4th favorite spy novel) is up there, but they didn’t gift away a prime age top liner who wasn’t asking for much money.

The Rangers are a team that have never quite grasped the whole Cap Era and need for efficiency over brute spending thing. They tried to do things right, but got completely short circuited and went right back to their old ways because of a freakout over Tom Wilson. I'm betting the Leafs will be viewed the same way soon.

Fear not, though. I have been assured the Flyers aren't like that.
