Now that I've seen the video of the Adam Johnson incident, not on purpose, "freak accident" might be the wrong term used. I was expecting him to be on the ground and accidentally get cut, he was coming across the blue line with the puck and the dude pretty much karate kicked him in the neck...dude should be in jail for murder

As much as I want justice any time someone is killed, I don't agree with your description of the incident. It looked like he was trying to hit the player in front of him and kind of side-swiped him causing his body to spin and his leg to come off the ice and whip around like a helicopter blade right at his neck. I do think it was reckless to but I think freak accident is still the right way to describe it. Don't think we'll see any charges here.

Yeah, I don't think you can put someone in jail for that, but it was 100% reckless. Sad thing is, and it probably wouldn't have made a difference due to the speed everyone was moving, but the play looked offside.

I unfortunately saw a quote tweet of the video and it’s definitely worse than I expected. Feel terrible for his friends and family. Nearly impossible to say there was intent there but it’s not very common a skate blade makes it up to the neck level like that.

Accidents like this and Clint Malarchuk are scary even at a professional arena setting. The medical staff available are capable of some incredible life saving care. One of my rec league games I had imagines of something like that happening and knowing that the random guy working the pro shop had no shot of saving somebody in the same scenario. Please wear the protective stuff people

Leagues should probably start making neck guards mandatory.

Most of the guys also let their ears hang out of their helmets even after Carlson's injury last season. The peer pressure not to look wimpy is intense.

Here he confirms his ear stayed on, but he wears extra protection

The 90 mph slapshot had hit Carlson straight in the side of his helmet. That impact pushed the helmet into Carlson's head, which severed his temporal artery and fractured his skull.

Strome and Ovechkin grabbed Carlson and rushed him to the bench, where Erik Gustafsson was ready with a towel. Carlson pressed it to his face and made his way down the tunnel under his own power.

He couldn't imagine what was coming next as the medical team got to work.

"You don't know what's happening at the time," Carlson told The Hockey News in an exclusive 1-on-1 before the season came to an end. "Honestly, for me, I was just thinking that it was a pretty big cut and getting stitched up. It's not like they were telling me, 'Oh man, this is a bad artery here.'"

That was exactly the case, though. Jason Serbus and the team's medical staff had to rush to stop the bleeding before Carlson was stretchered out of the arena and taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Just a guard on the right side? Even a guy who's gotten terribly injured hasn't learned his lesson.

Leagues should probably start making neck guards mandatory.
full cages, too. Football and lax players make it work

Which of the 19 outdoor games is this?

I haven't seen it, but I remember Zhitnik I think on the Panthers got cut standing upright too. The dude flipped basically, and the skate flipped up and got him. Was this not the case?

Little different. Was more of an open ice collision where Zhitnik was a slice from an errant skate. Seems like the force of the wound led to a fatal amount of blood loss. Honestly my original post makes it seem like it could’ve been preventable if he got medical treatment. I really am not even sure. It looked terrible

Seider on the redwings is lucky the league he played in before coming to NA had mandatory neck guards. He took a blade right to the jugular and the guard probably saved his life.

I just switched to one of these after a stick to the cheek last month left me with 4 stitches and likely a permanent scar in a prominent location on my face. Transition hasn't been bad so far. A little harder picking up passes in my feet but i'm adjusting.

I’m gonna give the guy the benefit of doubt that he didn’t intentionally try to murder someone on ice because that would utterly insane. Utterly stupid & reckless absolutely though.

The more I look at it, the more I can't understand how his leg flung up like that. I don't even think he could do that intentionally. It's so unnatural looking. Looks like right as his clipped Johnsons teammate he made the decision to try to blow up Johnson. I just don't know what could have caused the leg to fling up like that. It's so bizarre. f***ing tragic.

The only thing I could think of is he stuck his leg out in attempt trip & he got it up higher than he imagined. I don’t know it is apparently being investigated by the police there but I’d imagine that would be really hard to prove intent in a court of law.

Yeah it could have been that he made a last second decision to make contact no matter what and felt Johnson was going to avoid it and tried to stick out his leg, but there are some strange physics at play here. I'd like to hear a physics professor give their opinion on this.

The guy will have to live with it for the rest of is life. He doesn't need airheads like Chris Therien calling for his head. Everyone with a bit of sense knows that was a tragic accident.
The amount of online abuse he's receiving now (many of them racist - what surprise) shows what world we live in.

@Appleyard would know best but I believe when pugilist/goon type of players started cycling out of the NHL they naturally trickled down to the leagues below that. But then the KHL & AHL put rules in place with games played requirements & such in their leagues to curb that trickle down effect. After those leagues cycled out a lot of those type of players entering their league a lot of these guys took refuge in the British Hockey League.

They’re kind of the last really pro hockey league in the world that has a 90’s like hockey element to it. I don’t know if that was done by design to kind of build interest in a country that doesn’t have much history in & it’s not you’re getting the best non-NHL players anyway.

So that neck slash was totally not an accident. You don't accidently Sweet Chin Music a guy when you're trying to hit him. Add the player's history into the equation and he should be sent to jail
