Marner's contract is one of the main reasons Leafs can't afford to re-sign Hyman even if they wanted to, because they don't have the available cap space.

Which makes sense because you had to clear cap room first, before you could sign another player using that new cap space created. So Marleau and Leafs 1st had to go.

If the Leafs cleared out Marner's cap hit first they would have plenty of room for re-sign Hyman, however instead because Marner is staying that means Hyman must go.

The Marner contract continues to pile up casualties as assets go out the door to be able to keep it and remain cap compliant.

Is it Marner's fault also that we are still paying Kessel $1.2M?

The flat cap is really making things difficult. It will probably be our undoing.
It is going to be the factor that makes keeping Hyman and Rielly difficult.

reminds me of the time we bulked up with all those big names only to lose a season to the lockout…
Blame the GM, his cap projection was wrong. Incoming pandemic excuses in 3....2....1....

Come down from your pedestal and stop telling people how they should think. Just cause you think and say it doesn’t make your opinions anymore right.

well let’s see. Tampa won the championship last year with help from tax exemptions. How about sitting out one of their top players all year this year. You’re ignoring the fact that the taxes helped them. Dubas and the leafs had a plan with signing bonuses that would help them if they had to but COVID happened a the cap flatlined.

I understand why people are upset but use a little common sense.
I’m not telling you how to think, I’m explaining reality.

The Lightning exceed the cap with a championship winning team that could go back to back. They maintain this strength with a very talented and deep team made a little deeper with some fancy footwork on the cap ceiling. I ain’t mad at that. If you ain’t cheatin’ you ain’t competin’.

How do the Leafs beat that, though?

Its unfortunate but if the big 4 are staying intact, there isnt room to sign Hyman plus bringing in another name player that is being rumored all over the place. It's one or the other. My hope is that the player they are targeting will come in at the price of 7 million per with the team trading him eating some of his contract to bring his cap hit down to 5 million per. This is the number rumored to have been turned down by Hyman already. But if we can get a player at that number which is bigger, tougher and more skilled then Hyman. It is the way to go.

Evander Kane anyone????

I’ll play your silly game.

no it’s not. Nothing is ever his fault. He can do no wrong.
It was a shitty negotiation all around. Marner tunnel focused on Matthews as a comparable rather than his actual comparables. Dubas for folding like a glove and giving into the unreasonable contract. Very shitty all around and Marner is wearing that contract like an anchor right now as he should.

My 2 cents on this is it’s Dubas’ fault period, he overpaid Marner. With that being said, if Marner doesn’t live up to his contract he’s got no one to blame but himself. Want to be paid elite? Perform elite and if you don’t, accept the criticism you entitled twerp.......

Everyone will try and be more gentle with our comments because you are so sensitive ... How about we say " In my humble opinion ..." before all statements , will that make you feel better ??

People have different opinions .... Not everyone agrees ... Don't be so sensitive .

Yes, we agree it’s reality, you say taxes, I say a bit of that mixed with some astute management.

I asked you how the Leafs compete with that.

And why are you setting the bar with middle of the pack teams? Aren’t they trying to be the best?

they compete by making insane bonus clauses... other than that, they have nothing they can do.

Take a walk man. I know you want to jump on sparxx band wagon cause he wants to bash Dubas. Go get your own opinion if you want to have a conversation with me and stop jumping in with me while I’m talking to sparxx. You look like a lost puppy.

I suppose they could refrain from signing very expensive UFA's for 2nd line positions, and force their RFA's into taking market rate contracts? But aside from that, yea, not much they can do.

Say marner took the rumoured $10m x7 deal that was apparently on the table all off-season. Is 893k really the difference in keeping Hyman? Surely you can come up with that by pinching off of whoever replaces Simmonds 1.5 and maybe shaving a few hundred grand off your earmarked 1b goalie budget.
No which is why we said you can’t pay 3 forwards double digits instead of saying only pay the 3rd forward 9.99 million.

We committed to Matthews and Tavares.
Two 5/6 million wingers.
