Happy for Zach that he is able to finally cash a big payday. Wonder who gets him.

Outlook for the leafs doesnt look to be getting better, hopefully robertson and Sandin can bring some excitement.

You like Vesey, how about Thornton? Spezza is an exception rather than the norm, but even he is old and needs to be used sparingly...even Simmonds cost $1.5 million...to say a flat cap helps is ridiculous...if it wasn't for the pandemic, the cap would probably be at $85 to $86 million now...enough to sign a couple of decent 3rd/4th liners, not over-the-hill or fringe NHL scrubs.

i mean the Leafs got Brodie for 4 years 20 mil when he was probably a 6.5-8/year player before the pandemic ..

Time to face reality that this team is not winning next year and start giving Robbie, Sandin and maybe Lily a serious shot.
I’m all for it, maybe if the Leafs are sucking bad by Thanksgiving we can get new management?

I’m actually thankful the big 4 got paid or else players like Hyman would get overpaid and be a legit anchor to our lineup going forward.

missing 20ish games each of the last two seasons and nearing 30? Can only imagine his health getting better .. .. ..

Also amazing how he had 1 point in the playoffs and avoided criticism. But sign him immediately!!!!!

Because this board is overrun by Dubas and Shanahan haters atm. They would rather be right than have a good team.

Or maybe it's because we're sick and tired of seeing this team go 1 and done in the playoffs year after year after year after year after year........

Let me guess. If the Leafs miss the playoffs next year, you're the kind of fan who will come in here and say "Hey. We are progressing. At least we didn't lose in the 1st round this year" right???

anytime you have a chance to pick up a tavares you do it.

As long as you have a plan as to how to accommodate that $11M cap hit without having to make unreasonable sacrifices.

"We can and we will" is not a plan, it's arrogance mixed with ignorance.

Too bad but this is probably prudent. I imagine the UFA term and AAV he's looking for is significant and just not doable here. I'm also concerned with his knee injuries.

There were so many posters confident that Hyman would take a hometown discount. Not gonna happen it looks like. I guess overpaying does have consequences. Excuse me for getting some satisfaction out of that. That's a lesson the team needs to learn.
I can’t blame Hyman for wanting a good payday, look at the divas who took Dubas to the woodshed, now think how much effort they put in compared to Hyman. He probably wants out for this very reason.

Okay. I am 100% convinced that you're not a Leafs fan and you're just trolling.

This is the darkest time to be a leaf fan

A guy like Hyman walking sucks. Thought he'd take a 4 year 4 million deal.
Why should he take a discount when the 11 million dollar club bent Dubas over and fed it to him dry

And the pipeline is about to go dry, these lack of picks are going to catch up with us in a couple years. Every which way you look, the future is challenging.

sandin, liljegren, Roberson, Amirov, among others.. oh ya drying up

Fortunately for them Kakko and Lafreniere have not met standards. But imagine if they did.

I guess the leafs really screwed themselves by going for good greedy players. They should blow it up and go for players who are not that good greedy next time.

Fixed

The writing was on the wall for these kinds of losses before the ink was dry on the contracts for Matthews and Marner.

I remember immediately wondering why they would want to paint the team into a corner by eating up so much of the cap. Didn't they want the team to be able to surround them with a decent supporting cast so they could go on long playoff runs? Well I guess it's now become abundantly clear that was never a high priority.

In no scenario, is Zach Hyman worth 5+ million dollars. He's a good player who I'd like to keep , but if he thinks he's worth 5 million on the open market(as some suggest), then he can leave. Sorry but this isn't even the Big 3's fault, this is a case of inflated self worth because he plays on the a line with Matthews a lot. There's no one on this board, that would be happy with what he signs for in the open market because his 10 empty net goals and hard work, isn't worth it.

The arrogance of Leaf Nation really is comical some times. Why would any player on those successful teams want to sign in Toronto? Really, give your collective heads a shake......

Maybe it's a bit strongly stated but is Toronto really a desirable destination any longer? I suspect it isn't. You'll get nickel and dimed on the contract then you have to watch your team's studs mail it in post season. Toronto may still attract a hometown boy or two but I don't think it's going to be a destination for a Cup seeker.

do you make minimum wage? When your work offers you a raise do you go “no! I need to make less for the company”. Like get real and don’t worry about what other people make.

sports fans who go to 1 game a year and spend like 200 have a lot of nerve telling professional athletes who pay 50% in taxes, 10% in agent fees and 16% in escrow, how much they should make.

The puck will now sit in the corner or along the boards in the offensive zone with no Leaf jersey in sight. Hyman was the only Leaf that would go near that dangerous part of the rink. GL to the team, more regression with even the hope of the playoffs looking further and further away.
Come on, it’s not all doom and gloom, we still got Willy’s elite zone entries to look forward to? :sarcasm:

Yep, cap wise makes sense with our terrible predicament. But, the bottom line is the team is worse off without him, I doubt you’re finding a status quo or upgrade for 2.25 mil in cap space, and there is no in house replacement. So, we can comfort ourselves thinking whomever signs him over pays, but that doesn’t detract from the point, we’re worse when he leaves.
Hyman is worth around 4-4.5MM in my opinion. If he signs above that number, I'll be happy for bot him and the team. If he signs within that range, then the team dropped the ball.

Brodie is not a $8 million d man...he doesn't provide enough offense and it's not like he's young...he's probably around $6 million in a normal year as a UFA...so the Leafs save $1 million, but lose out on about $5 million due to flat cap...that's still a big loss.
