Hampus Lindholm just got 8x6.5, Dumba contract comparable?
IMO he is a better Dman than Dumba. I don't think that Dumba should get as much as Brodin, but that's the problem with Dumba's previous cap hit (6M). How can he perceive an offer of anything less than 6M as anything but an insult?

Because he never achieved the ceiling that was possible when that contract was offered and now he is a known quantity and fairly easy to value. I’d say 5x5 or something is fair or he can move on

I think Dumba will negotiate a reasonable deal to stick around with an AAV less than his current one. This has more or less been his team for a while from an emotional perspective and has roots now in the area.

If Brodin is valued at 6M, Dumba shouldn't get anything over 5.2 maybe. Any higher and he should be traded.

It would absolutely floor me if Dumba comes back for less than $6M.

Guerin gave Spurgeon $7.5 and Brodin $6… I highly doubt he’s going to nickel and dime Dumba.

They’re going to run the same deal back again, and probably tack a an extra year or two onto it.

It's not nickel and diming Dumba, it's just not handing out bad comtracts. But Guerin has shown a willingness to give bad contracts to guys he deems as character guys, so you're probably right.

Under $6M is definitely team friendly for the role that Dumba plays, and would be him doing us a favor.

Anybody talking about under $5M is completely out to lunch.

The market is the market, no matter what our own cap situation happens to be.

I think the problem is paying guys for the role they fill and not for the player they are. I don't really care if he's playing on our top pair, he should not get as much as Brodin did. That contract he currently has was after a 50 point season. Since then, he's been a 33 per 82 player. And his defense has improved, surely, but it's still nowhere near Brodin's. So unless you're gonna make the case that Brodin is worth 7+, Dumba shouldn't be getting 6. And for the record, RNH went from a 7x6M contract to an 8x5.125M contract, so there is precedent for guys taking pay cuts in this situation.

When did this happen?

In my opinion, he took a meaningful step forward starting last season from my recollection.

Point production aside Brodin’s ability to handle the puck and make offensive players that impact the transition game and the Wild breaking the puck out is much better than earlier in his career.

And Lindholm just signed his deal after basically being a ~30 point defender for his entire career. And it's not like he laps Dumba defensively or anything.

A good top 4 defenseman costs you more than $5M when the cap is up over $80M. And that's what Dumba is.

I'd give him more than 5M. Just not more than 6.

The interesting thing about Dumba to me is that I still have people mention the offensive upside being so valuable, and often times is in comparison to Brodin, but Brodin has added more offense since Dumba was hurt in 2018-2019.

All Strengths Points

2019-2020

Brodin - 28
Dumba - 24

Dumba - 14

2021-2022 (Current)

Obviously Jonas is the better defender, PKer, and by statistics adds more or less the same offense. Do we give Dumba $6M+ based on these numbers and attributes? Probably. Should we? Different conversation.

Dumba does not bring enough to his game to justify $6M. He’s a great locker room prescence & energy guy, but I really think this team will have an easier job replacing him instead of Fiala. Dumba has not turned into the Burns-like defenseman we hoped he could be. If he’s not going to get prime #1PP time, then I really don’t think he’s being properly utilized here. Brodin absolutely carries that pairing & I think he’ll be able to perform nearly as well if we bring in someone else that makes <$3M. If Dumba takes a crazy paycut like down to $4M AAV, you find a way to make it work. However, Brodin & Spurgeon have both shown that they can carry a pairing. Give them some capable defensemen & roll with this offense.
