Growing up I was told alternate captain is correct and people who think it’s assistant captain are mistaken.

Ha. I do that all the time. I am not happy unless I am mad.

Having said that how old are you?

I am about to turn 58, American, been involved with hockey since 1972, and to me it has always been assistant. (and it was also off-sides)

It always was alternate...the player(s) was/were named in case the captain was injured or penalized and unable to fulfill his duties....

This is one of those things where if you want to call it a jersey or a sweater, it's all good. Means the same thing, and everyone knows what you mean. Don't be a pedant and try to relax. It's good for you.

It has always been alternate, but I've even heard Getzlaf refer to them as "assistant's" in an interview once. I'll keep saying alternate because it's correct, but at the end of the day it doesn't really matter, I suppose.
