Chemistry between the two elevated him to the role is what I'm saying. Without Suter, he's fit FAR better on the 2nd pair than top.
He and Brodin would make a fine 1st pair. He’s a good #2 and a great #3. There’s a reason they’ve been able to throw anybody to the left side of him and have an effective D pair.

I guess what I'm saying is that I consider a #2 to be somebody that can play with a #1 (Suter, Heiskanen, Hedman, etc...) and not take much, if anything, off of the table. Which I believe that Spurgeon (maybe 27-33 year old Spurgeon) qualifies for.

A good #2 is just, by default, also probably an excellent #3. Same player. That's what I have Brodin as just as well.

Right now, I have Brodin, Spurgeon and Faber as 2/3's with Faber obviously having the best opportunity to grow out of that. Then I have Middleton as a 4/5, Bogosian a 6, and the rest 6/7's or 7's.

By anyone you mean Scandella, Suter, and now Middleton? There was a little time with Brodin too, but it hasn't really worked well IIRC. The Spurgeon/Goli experiment wasn't working so they went and traded for Middleton.

Going off of Stat trick d-pairs 5v5 (3 year blocks is the most they allow):
13-14 to 15-16
Suter/Spurgeon- 2285 mins
Scandella/Spurgeon- 1023 mins
Brodin/Spurgeon- 122 mins
Dumba/Spurgeon- 70 mins

16-17 to 18-19
Suter/Spurgeon-3222 mins
Brodin/Spurgeon- 479 mins
Seeler/Spurgeon- 71 mins
Scandella/Spurgeon- 61 mins

19-20 to 21-22
Suter/Spurgeon- 1635 mins
Goli/Spurgeon- 507 mins
Middleton/Spurgeon- 241 mins
Brodin/Spurgeon- 236 mins
Merrill/Spurgeon- 54 mins

22-23 to present
Middleton/Spurgeon- 1174 mins
Goli/Spurgeon- 116 mins
Brodin/Spurgeon- 105 mins
Merrill/Spurgeon- 60 mins

Anything under 100 mins is there for reference. I wouldn't count it as a true pairing if it wouldn't equal more than a handful of games total. For me that looks like normal crossover in games (line changes, in game injuries, penalties, etc)

Agreed, they do not work well together at all.
After Suter left, they tried to force them as a pair... but eventually split them up because it just didn't work. Thus the Brodin - Dumba top pair was born, which has now transitioned to Brodin - Faber pair.

The Goligoski/Spurgeon pairing had the best 5v5 xGF% among the main pairings during the 21-22 season.

Middleton/Spurgeon led that category last year as well.

Yet they separated Goli/Spurgeon and their crazy 70% GF% (better than the xGF%). It was a good stats paring but not good eye test pairing. They also were playing sheltered minutes. Heavy o-zone starts, weaker competition, and the least amount of 5v5 ToI. Goli was in the pressbox shortly after the trade. There was that chart from the Athletic that was linked on the forums here showing the QoC.

I was just responding to the Spurgeon can be paired with anyone remark. He really has only been paired with a handful of players. He hasn't had to play with the Addison, Benn, Folin, and Prosser quality players post lockout.

The Merrill/Addison pair was 2nd on the team at 53.09% xGF% last year. Goli/Dumba top pair (ToI) was 3rd with 52.24%. I can't say I'd want to see either if these pairs again, no matter what the x(stats) say.

How long will it take for Digitalbooya to admit that Boldy is better than Caufield?

How many years must a mountain exist, before it is washed to the sea?

I'd say that the franchise moves to Hudson and those 4 all ask to be traded simultaneously.

What are you even on about?

1) I haven’t brought up Caufield in a quite a while because people on here get so butthurt at the sight of his name. It’s actually kind of funny, but also really sad. Does Caufield live rent free in your head or do I live rent free in your head?

2) Is this because I jinxed Boldy into scoring a goal yesterday? Completely different ulterior motive for that not relating to Caufield at all.

3) I’ve already said Boldy is better. Those who are not blind and/or ignorant know that.

That loss last night might’ve been the straw that broke the camel’s back. We had some momentum and just handed the game to a team we need to catch. Feels like a 12th overall pick type of year, unfortunately. That stings because this draft drops off pretty hard around 10.
