Minnesota Wild General Discussion - 2023-24

That loss last night might’ve been the straw that broke the camel’s back. We had some momentum and just handed the game to a team we need to catch. Feels like a 12th overall pick type of year, unfortunately. That stings because this draft drops off pretty hard around 10.
Yeah, winning against EC teams is fun but with the standings being what they are the Wild really need to bury the teams that are actually standing between them and a WC spot.

A sick part of me wants to bubble wrap Kap, JEE & Faber to engage the tank. I think this team is going to make a late bid for a wildcard spot and fall just short. Dickinson, Levshunov, Buium would be such a nice addition. Blueline is looking really thin with the stagnation of ROR, Hunt, Lambos & Peart

I'd love to bubble wrap the top players and let the Iowa players get some NHL time. Not going to happen unfortunately. EC wins are fun but there's no dent to be made in wild card wthout taking down teams in front. Nashville, KIngs, Blues.

Does anyone know why Peart’s scoring has fallen this year?

I'm not sure about that, after seeing Yakemchuk and Greentree, both of who are usually listed in the teens, as is Buium. Even Jiricek might end up being a fantastic pick.

I want to say he’s working on his defensive game but I doubt that is it. SCSU is scoring at a decent rate too. So I have no idea, maybe they have a new PPQB this year or something

I want one of the Big 4 D - Silayev, Buium, Levshunov or Dickinson. I think they all have excellent floors. Lev & Silayev probably are pipe-dreams but a man can dream

Agreed on Jiricek though. I think he could be a great value piece.

He seems a bit passive this year.

Declan Chisholm another LHS d-man. This one claimed off of waivers. 24 yo, 4 NHL games, and a lot of AHL games. Looks to be an offensive d-man by his AHL point totals.
Knowing very little about him I am already excited to see him play over our current guys.

Seems like a good gamble, we can certainly give him a shot at some nhl time and everything seems to suggest he can play bottom pair.

Maybe reading into things that arent there but this and the butcher pick up could be construed as gathering bodies to finish out the year with in the expectation of trading a dman or two out at the deadline. Middleton (not sure if he gets more than a 2nd or not) and bogosian (get a late round pick back) are prob most likely? Maybe someone wants merrill as a 7th d/ playoff depth for a late round pick (doubt)?

Middleton gets a 2nd minimum. Great contract, having a career year offensively, tough, with size...GM's LOVE that. FWIW, i think there is zero chance he is being traded.

I doubt it but we'll see. Jakes a great guy but overrated at this point. If you go to hockey reference and look at expected +/- (a stat thats basically corsi but adjusted for hiw dangerous the chances were both for and against) hes towards the bottom of the team in that regard. Its a stat i like both bc of what it is and what it takes into account and bc it matches my "eye test" of who the contributors are (faber, boldy, ek, kap, zucc, brodin all towards the top & merrill, goose, bogo, etc toward the bottom).

I do think he could have value to teams making a playoff run. *maybe* a late 1st (which ofc is what any good playoff teams 1st would be anyway) but more likely a 2nd imo

Didn't you say Addison would return a 2nd or 3rd? I could be mistaken. I think there is some serious overvaluation of players by posters here. Middleton isn't going to bring that much unless two or more teams sustain serious losses on the blueline and a bidding war ensues,

He should absolutely be traded imo. He's a decent #5/great #6 on a cup team. Get a true 2nd pairing defensemen in FA.

Addison isn’t even remotely close to the same value as Middleton. Completely different skillsets and how they’re perceived by GMs.

You’re overvaluing the value of draft picks.

My point was he overvalued Addison and is doing the same with Middleton. I am not saying they are the same player.

Yes, but I believe when that was worn it was before Addison had tanked his value. Going into the season, Addison still had a good amount of potential. With each game, his potential decreased (significantly)

Russo "sensing" that the Marat will be signed when the KHL season ends on 2/25 and he will make his NHL debut shortly thereafter.

Looks like Marat's team is comfortably out of playoff contention so it checks out as possible.

Can prospects from KHL come over immediately after KHL regular season ends, or how does it work?

Hope it's true because I'm curious to see how he looks in North America. Not as much from a KHL vs NHL/AHL angle as wondering if he'd do well with a change of scenery. I've only seen a handful of his KHL games (and no recent ones) but his skating's always looked great and he seems smart enough to think the game at professional speeds.

Maybe he fizzles, but the raw ingredients for some kind of NHL'er seem like they're there :dunno:

Yeah agree. If/when the wild are good again you ideally wouldnt want him on top 4. Given that hes under contract for one more season where the wild wont be good and will likely want a raise beyond what #5 D is worth, it certainly can make sense to trade now

I read in the Prospects forum that his KHL contract doesn't officially expire until 4/30, so I'm not sure how this is going to work.

I don't think anything has changed since last year. The KHL team needs to sign off on the player leaving if it's before the end of the league year (2nd or 3rd round of the NHL Playoffs). The norm for KHL teams is to not agree to this player release.

He's currently 6th on that team for FWD (16) points. Plays plenty on both the PP and PK, 2nd in overall ToI/game. 3rd on the team in FOs taken with a 47.2% win rate. The team is a bottom feeder.
