Well, I’m an Arizona fan. Our team is having an absolute crisis on defense. Middleton isn’t old yet and isn’t a UFA yet. And the Coyotes have 10 2nd round picks in the next the three drafts. I could see them offering a pair of them for him. But I didn’t expect him to be available. I thought maybe because Minny hasn’t started the season as well as hoped. But I didn’t really think Guerin would actually be selling.

Not so sure Middleton would help much anyway. He looks serviceable next to Spurgeon, but when Spurgeon was out and Middleton had to be the best defenseman on his pair, he completely lost the plot. Arizona is better off going for a more steady, defensive minded veteran imo.

The Coyotes are playing all of Stecher, Brown, Dermott, and Kesselring regularly. Dumba is about to be healthy scratched tomorrow in favor the Kolyachonok. Because Dumba has been worse than all of those minor leaguers I just named. The Coyotes probably have the worst blueline in the league. They need help badly. Ideally from anyone who can be called “solid” or “steady”. But I don’t think they’ll trade assets for anyone who’s older than Middleton or anyone who’s a pending UFA.

I would move Middleton in a heart beat if we had a reasonable replacement ready to play. But we don't right now.
I think Mermis/Hunt/ROR would do fine, considering the trajectory we are on. Middleton is ok for what he is, and worth his cap hit, but I'd rather have 2 2nds.

I'd do two 2nds for Middleton. He's not bad, just a bit of a plodder. He's actually got a few points this year, but that's actually not his thing. Good at clearing the crease, won't be pushed around.

Yeah no I know it's bad, but Middleton only looks any good when he's playing with Spurgeon, so I'm saying he may not stabilize or help much if you have to pair him with any of those guys who are worse than him. A guy like Tanev is a more sound defender who doesn't necessarily need to play with someone better than him to still be effective. Not sure who else is available like that, but that strikes me as more of what Arizona needs than Middleton is. And I don't think Tanev would cost too much more than the two 2nds you're willing to pay for Middleton.

This might be reassuring for some people here to read

Guess it depends on how we want to end the season. If we think we're battling for a PO spot, keep middleton easily. I don't think he's as bad as others here. If we are conceding, offload middleton IMMEDIATELY and get them 2nds.

Oh, I see. But I don´t think Midds would be a good addition on AZ, because he´s not a guy you would depend on leading your D. He´s a guy who needs a strong partner and Spurge is just that. I love Midds for what he brings, but I don´t think he´s anyone to place your bets on to do the heavy lifting.

I don't want to see any of them in our top 4 again for a while, ROR not included.
Trade Middleton for 2nd+3rd. Waive Merrill. Give O’Rourke/Hunt 5-10 game stints next to Spurgeon.

Bacon-Broccoli
Hunt/O’Rourke-Spurgeon
Mermis-Bogosian
Goligoski

When do our LD prospects get a legit chance to prove themselves at the NHL level? Like Faber was just gifted a spot and that has turned out well. What exactly do the others have to do to get a chance, even if it is a short stint? It’s frustrating watching the same terrible bottom tier players out there when we could be seeing young players trying to earn their spot.

You don't re-sign Zucc and then trade him before his contact even starts. Good luck ever getting another player to take a discount, sign without a full NMC, or re-sign before his contract is up. It's not like players are lining up to sign in MN as it currently stands.
It's not like this has never happened in the NHL before. Setoguchi re-signed in San Jose for a discount, only to be traded a month and a half later to us.

They had no problem with free agents after.

I know it's early, but not that early. We are near the bottom of the entire league, nvm the Central, and way out of a playoff spot. At best we'll squeak into the playoffs and lose in the first round.
Let's call it what it is, and trade for the future.

Seto was traded the day after he signed his contract.

Seto (24 yo, RFA) being traded is not the same thing as Zucc (35+ UFA contract).

I believe there's an agreement between Zucc and Guerin that he won't be moved, and that's why Zucc left a lot of $$ on the table. And Guerin seems to be a man you can trust.

I'm thinking there was a handshake deal between the 2 of them. Something similar to Goli a couple years ago and that was enough for Zucc not to push to get the full NMC added to his current deal (like Foligno did).

what would be the asking price for Eriksson Ek if say he was available?
