FJo was way more absurd of a pick IMO.
Stramel has NHL traits written all over him. He just has to put it all together.

Early in the season he wasn’t assertive enough. Now he’s assertive but doesn’t make the right decision once he gets the pucks.

It’s a slow build. 10,000 piece Lego set and we are maybe at 500 pieces put together.

Not to alarm anyone, but Filip Johansson has 11 points in 37 games with Abbotsford this season. Not sure what that means for his NHL potential, but it's something I guess.

He has quite a bit more value than future considerations.

If I were calling the shots, I trade Zucc, Bogo, & Duhaime. I’d purposefully make it more difficult to win 2023-24 games while retaining the ability to tell the loyal fan base “It’s all about winning!”

Meanwhile, I’d re-focus on building a future Stanley Cup contender by giving Wallstedt, Beckman, Khusnutdinov, and Hunt real opportunities.

AND I’d high-five the people that recognize modern Cup contenders are generally built around premuim draft picks.
EDM is doing well this year, but have had years of futility and high draft choices. Getting a McDavid, or even a Draisaitl is extremely rare. TOR has also had years of the same. Then you have teams like BUF, ARI, OTT, CBJ, NJD. Year after year of high draft choices, and are still struggling to make the playoffs let alone contend for a Cup. It looks like DET might finally make the playoffs this year, again after years of futility. We'll see about CHI.

Bottom line is that tanking for high draft picks is no guarantee of future success. I think it's more strategic tanking, holding onto draft picks, competence, and luck(Aho 35th, Pastrnak 25th, Kucherov 58th, Point 79th, etc) that determines how successful a team is.

It's worked for like 2 teams, CHI and PIT. I think there may have been a 3rd but I'm overtired and can't think.

Then there's the list of teams you provided that drafting high hasn't worked out for. Odds are, tanking for a high draft pick will NOT net you a Cup. It's a mix of things, mostly drafting well - hitting on the high picks and finding real gems in the late picks as well as supplementing that with savvy trades to fill in the gaps.

Tampa and Colorado. Maybe LA.

How do we tank with Kap, Ek, Boldy, Faber & Brodin? This year we’ve had zero depth, no Spurgeon and <0.900 SV% from both goalies and we still are in late lottery territory

Take a look at the record under Evason this year. You tank by allowing that rot to continue. Not changing your coach

Definitely a glass half full take. Kinda like saying "he'd be good if only he was better"

The picks that were taken later (say after pick #10) and amounted to being top 5 picks are not plentiful. I'd say roughly one a year, depending on where you draw the lines. Percentages would tell you that you will get one once every 32 years.
Bottom line is there is no one path to building a team but higher picks help. JEE was a GREAT pick for where he was taken but he isn't in the top couple of tiers of NHLers. Those guys went earlier by in large.

I guess it’s a good thing most prospects get better over time. Will it be good enough to make the NHL? Maybe, maybe not. I do expect him to be a lot better next year and hopefully we see a lot more growth with more ice time.

If I understand you correctly, wouldn't Boldy fit this description? Picked 12th in 2019, but is widely considered one of the top 5 best players picked in that draft, maybe even top 2?

So anyway what does Kaprizov, Faber, Boldy, Rossi and even new stud Chisholm think moving forward? Put yourself in these guys shoes.
3 of the 5 guys you listed don't even have a seasons worth of games under their belt. They should be happy to be getting playing time. You think they have any kind of sway to make demands?

Why don't you tell us what you think they're thinking?

Well they did hire a worse head coach
Well the record shows a significant change in trajectory from the moment he took over without any substantive roster changes so the new coach honeymoon is a real thing

I'll be at the game on Tuesday again, I hope he plays by then. I can't imagine Guerin is going to want to wait as long to get him in as it took for Shaw.

I'd say top 2 or 3. Hughes is better, and probably Seider. After that i'd definitely keep Boldy over Caufield and Zegras.

Now we can trade Zucc because his new BFF is coming over to play Center between him and Boldy.

Does this mean Khusnutdinov plays Thursday? Maroon and Foligno back? Beckman gets a chance? Paper move?

Never mind
