one year of missing the playoffs and he breaks down and needs to leave? interesting I didnt know he was going to be so fragile not to mention getting a taste of the 2nd round just to get blown out and go home somehow is going to help this entire team improve? We need much more than 3 players to "taste" playoff success

i will take the odds of us moving up 10 spots over us making the 2nd round.

If anything, showing Kaprizov that we have a bright future here (in the form of good youth/prospects who can support him) by the time they're negotiating his next contract will go at least as far as making the second round once and getting swept. Losing in four games in the second round this year isn't gonna be a moment Kaprizov looks back on and says "wow, yeah, that was fun, let's do more of that".

Except that Fiala was healthy, Zuccarello was not. How many times do we have to remind people about that. Zucc should be respected for trying to help the team despite being hurt, not bashed :thumbd:

If Zuccarello can't produce because he's hurt every year come playoff time, he's no longer a player we need on this team, certainly not in a premier position across from our best player.

sometimes you help more by doing less.

I agree, I dont see how always being a 1 and done team and then occasionally making it to the 2nd to get wrecked is better than obtaining prospects who give you a glimmer of hope more than " well, we tried again but... same old same old".

And what are the odds of us moving up 10 spots? And if we did win the lottery, how soon would that pick be able to contribute to playoff success?

I would rather watch some playoff hockey THIS season instead of wishing upon a star for someone that couldn't help us for another 3-4 years, if ever.

Do you ever aspire for more? Like the last decade of first round exits makes me wonder if continuing to just scrape and claw our way into the playoffs so we can "watch some playoff hockey THIS season" is really the way to do it. Seems more like a need for instant gratification to me.

He's hurting the team by playing poorly while hurt.

Trade him then, many teams would love to have him.
I'd like to if possible. Sooner the better, as he can still get a decent return right now... the longer we wait the lower the return will be.

Except Zuccs has been non existent the three years Minnesota made the playoffs.

If we get routed in four games losing 7-1, 6-2, 5-1, 6-0 is that the exciting playoff hockey you want?

Have we been routed a single time this year for 4+ goal differential? The first two games were abysmal throwaways, but this team has been competitive in pretty much every game this season, I don't see a single team we could face that would do that to us this season.

NYR 7-3
SEA 4-0

And plenty of 3 goal differential games

Well maybe you shouldn't trade Zuccarello.

According to the media, Kaprizov asked Zucc to join him on the All-Star trip. Sure...Zucc with family has arrived, uncle Kirill's mentor and translator. The bond between those two is something else.

Also...I'm sure Fiala had other options, but he wanted to hang out with Kap & Zucc today. That's cool.

I don't care about their bond, Zucc is in the twilight of his career anyway. Kap is going to be playing LONG after Zucc is retired.

Colorado and Chicago and Pittsburgh found a way to tank at the right time.
Stanley Cups!
The Wild have been annoyingly competitve, and miss out on superster draft picks, almost always(Kaprizov).
Chicago just might repeat the cycle, just as the old school gets long in the tooth.
I can't fault the Wild for being competitive.
Luck is real, and seems to favor certain franchises. Small sample size really though. 2200 suddenly all the cosmic tumblers will fall in Minnesota's favor.

Sure...but let's say Guerin re-signs Zucc a couple of years, then offers him a coaching job. Should help a lot if you want Kaprizov to re-sign here. Sounds like a plan?

Amazing that they put up with such a bad locker room guy.:sarcasm:

Seeing Kaprizov, the Zuccarellos and Fialas hanging out at the allstar game makes my heart happy.

But yeah, it’s just a shitty spot to be in where we’re at. Winning a playoff round does nothing for me. Drafting 10-14 probably yields about a 1/5 chance of getting a real impact player (top line / top pair), and that’s what we really need. Our system is flooded with middle of the lineup guys. We need to snag a guy like Oliver Moore who could be the next Dylan Larkin.

I am leaning towards the we're not making the playoffs side of things right now, up until this point of the season, we have had the 3rd easiest schedule in the league and while it doesn't get horribly worse, Colorado/LA/St Louis/Calgary/Edmonton/Seattle/Dallas all have easier schedules going forward. Plus we are just not very good.

I haven't watched much this season, we are not entertaining in the slightest, and while having a slight chance at moving up in the draft is intriguing, part of me hopes they sneak in.

I still watch, but with nowhere near the interest that I watch a team like Newcastle. I quite often miss periods, or parts of games. Last year was different…they had so many improbable finishes, and watching Fiala and Boldy developing their own brand of magic to add to Kap’s and Zucc’s was a lot of fun. The GREEF’S were dominant… a fun time, up front. Was so disappointed in the playoff result, even though the odds that we could beat a CO team were slim.

I do think that they make the playoffs, though I have small hope that they win a round, and none that they will get to a Cup final. If the team move/sit a couple of players out of Greenway/Hartman/ Foligno/Reaves and replace them with Rossi and Walker I will get more interested, even if they lose.

After last year, I got angry. This year, I’m trending towards apathetic.

It's definitely about being bad at the right time to get guys like Crosby, Kane and MacKinnon, but the other half is they actually committed to being not good.

I'm not even advocating for a full blown tank now, I'm just asking to move on from pieces that serve no long term purpose (Dumba, Zuccarello, Greenway, maybe Foligno, previously Spurgeon when he was due for an extension) and to not be deadline buyers with a fringe playoff team. That's a pretty simple and harmless way to build up the prospect pool and give yourself more chance at getting lucky in the draft. At the very least, you give yourself more prospect capital to make trades down the line when your team actually is ready to be a buyer.

Of course I aspire for more postseason success. I just dont think think tanking while Kaprizov is in his prime years is the answer.

Seems like a bit of a strawman argument. Worse Wild teams have done better than this against teams that have gone on to the Cup finals. These are scores I'd expect from the 1980s Oilers teams in the first round. In fact, even they didn't beat teams this soundly. I can understand why you may not want to see the Wild get bounced in the first round again, and I don't blame you for it, but some games will undoubtedly be competitive and exciting if they make it there.

I could see the blues easily destroy us in the playoffs. If you don’t like those numbers fine shrink it to 4-1, 3-0, 5-2, 6-3. Does that make jt better?

Wild have lost:

7-3 NYR
6-3 COL
4-0 SEA
5-2 EDM
5-2 SJS
4-1 DAL
5-2 CAR

So 40% of our regulation losses by 3 or more goals
