What is the point of this team over the next few years?

It's rather naive to think they will compete at a championship level with one hand tied behind their back due to cap penalties.

Yet, they have an actual star player in Kaprizov, and perhaps enough good youngsters to weather the storm.

Worst time to tank, and worst time to be competitive.

Still, a total tank over the next few seasons might have been the formula to get more than a star player.

Hold serve and hope some of the young guys are impact players by the end of it.

That's fair. I was hoping that all this work they're supposedly putting into the PP would result in something other than just rolling the normal lines on the PP, and we'd see something like:

Kaprizov-Ek-Boldy
Zuccarello-Addison

But that's probably expecting way too much out of Dean.
expecting a competent PP is asking too much.

What about a competent PK?
There's a little part of me that wants to see Kaprizov and Boldy on the PK, and just say "Screw the PP, it's going to suck anyway. Might as well try outscoring them while we're shorthanded." Who's the center on that PK line, you ask? Probably a defenseman.

Boldy would probably be a very good penalty killer anyway, I'd guess Kaprizov would be as well. Both have very high hockey IQs, could give the PK some counterpunch ability.

I dont see any reason besides possible injury to keep them off the PK but same can be said for not letting them touch the ice while protecting a lead in the final minutes if you simply fear injury.

I'm with AKL and the Dr.

Endure and hope. The prospect pipeline looks as stacked as it's ever been and figures to add another 2-3 impact prospects so who knows? But at 53, the Wild clock is ticking for me as a fan. Not sure how many more rebuilds I have in me. I unapologetically like cheeseburgers so I'm not going to live forever.

I wouldn't worry about it. You want your best players on the ice as much as possible. IMO, that includes the PK.

I agree, injury is the only reason i can think to not put them out there which if that is the case we shouldnt even have a net front presence. bottom 6 forwards should be used when the top 6 is gassed not automatically thrust into the PK role. Kap with Boldy and let them both take draws. Kap could be surprisingly good at it who knows.

I may have said it tongue-in-cheek, but there's a reason I said Boldy and not Zuccarello. I think it would be a sweet PK unit. If our PP is gonna suck anyway, might as well make the PK be good.

Both should be good, and both units should have them on the ice.

No excuse for a bad PP with these guys. That's on Do nothing Deano.

Thinking about future roster construction...
Assuming Rossi and another ELC fill out the forward spots this year....

For next year, we will have 2M extra in buyout costs
We will have to pay Boldy more...perhaps 6M, so that's a 5M increase
That makes 7M in total savings that needs to be found

For 23-24, the following are possible places to gain cap space:
1- Dumba resigns for less than 6M (maybe 3 @4.5?). Savings: 1.5M
2- Jost disappears, replaced with another ELC defenseman. Savings: 1M
3- Kulikov is replaced with an ELC Defenseman. Savings: 1M

4?- Cap rises by 2M: Savings: 2M

This would be 5.5M of room found, and presently we have 2.5M of cap space to spare (I'm counting on Rossi and another ELC as the 13th forward).

How much wiggle room does Guerin want? This gives him about 1M extra to use during the season, but that might be a tight squeeze.

Anyone esle want to chime in here?

Jost is a forward, just FYI.

The buyout dead cap goes up by $2m next season.

Here are the numbers (cap friendly) with an $83.5m cap. A $1m cap raise is pretty much guaranteed, anything higher is a bonus. IMO the GM shouldn't be counting on anything more than the $1m increase happening when planning his roster for next season.

Dead cap: $14.75m
7 FWDs: $28.85m (Kap, Hartman, Zucc, JEE, Foligno, Greenway, Dewar)
5 D: $19.255m (Spurgeon, Brodin, Goli, Middleton, Merrill)
1 G: $3.5m (MAF)
$66.32m tied up in 13 players (and dead cap)

$17.18m in free cap space.
RFA: Boldy, Jost, Duhaime, Gustavsson
UFA: Dumba, Freddy G, Kulikov
Any ELC will cost roughly $900k per roster spot. (just to keep it simple round numbers)

5 FWD, 1D, 1G, and pressbox spots need to be filled. So between 7-10 players are needed to fill out the roster.

I have for the 23-24 season:
-Rossi, Duhaime, ROR/Faber/Addison, and Gus/Wallstedt at 900k each ($3.6m total), filling 4 of those open roster spots for the 23-24 season.
-Boldy + Dumba for $10m combined filling 2 more roster spots.
-That puts the team with 10 FWDs, 7D, and 2G and $3.58m in free cap space. They'll need to fill 2 FWDs and probably 1 pressbox FWD spots with that money.

Jost is a $2.25m QO (his base salary for the 22-23 season), just something to mention.

A different numerical approach, but very close to what I was looking at. Thanks.

The big question I think is the Boldy + Dumba equation.

Dumba pretty much has to be gone, which is why it would have been prudent to trade Dumba this summer. I don't foresee him getting traded at the deadline, so I guess we'll use him as a rental and he'll walk for nothing?

I think that Russo(?) mentioned that BG had been floating Dumba's name out there before the draft, and that there wasn't a lot of interest. I do think there will be interest at the TDL, assuming that he has a decent (30 point) season. Much easier to deal with his cap hit at the point, and for us to retain if necessary.

By the TDL we should have a better idea on how well Addison, and possibly Faber and SJo, can fill on on RHD.

I wonder if they trade him at the TDL and then sign Faber to fill in his spot after the college season ends.

I think this is the likely scenario. I like the idea of a Brodin/Faber pairing. Not much offense but should be solid defensively.

Addison will also have a shot at filling Dumba's spot.
