Iowa with a come from behind 2-1 win last night over SD Gulls. A lot more chances than the score suggests- both Dostal and MacIntyre were good. Dewar one timer with the goalie pulled tied it up(assist Addison and Rossi). The Addison scored on a rebound after Dewar's shot hit the post(assist by Dewar and Shaw). First game back, and Dewar looks vg. Had an all round good game with excellent chances, some nice passing, and sent Jacob Perrault into his bench with a hit.
- Rossi is the best forward with the puck on his stick. Smart. Would like to see him with really smart offensive players like Boldy and Fiala. Seems to be able to wiggle out of trouble, but would like to see more strength from him. He gets knocked off the puck, even at the AHL level, and is only average in puck battles. Physical maturity might help him gain strength?
- Rau might not be a NHL'er, but is a vg AHL'er. He and Shaw are similar. Tough little guys, with some skill and good quickness. Probably tweeners, but won't embarrass themselves as call ups.
- Firstov's first game, I think. Did a couple of nice things, but overall, had little TOI- was adjusting to the speed , and strength of the AHL, as well as new teammates.
- Dewar is the best all round forward. Good on FO's, defensively, can make a pass, has a good shot, fast, reasonably strong and tough. if he was 2" taller and 10lbs. heavier he'd be a full time NHL'er. Kind of weird to say, but he reminds me of Spurgeon. Still like him better than Jost- or at least he is a better bang for the buck.
- Addison is the D version of Rossi. Excellent with the puck on his stick, gets his shot off quickly, aggressive offensively but smart about it. Not sure if he is a liability in the D zone, or just very average- he doesn't seem to make a lot of mistakes, and at least his skating gets him places quickly. Good on the breakout.
- McIntyre is best goalie I've seen in Iowa since Kahk.
- Swaney looks somewhat skilled and fast, and pretty smart. Not the strongest, average sized. Tweener? Not gritty enough to be an effective checking forward, but not talented enough to be a scorer in the NHL?
- Chaffee had an off game, but has been good recently. He's got to be consistently good to get Guerin's attention. Decent size, but doesn't use it.
- Beckman. Work in progress. Has to get better at just about everything, but is promising. Can see him being a secondary scorer in the NHL. The next Donato?
- Mermis is good enough to be a callup. Strong for an average sized guy. Good at just about everything, with no standout talent. Needs to use his feet more to close gaps, he's got the quickness, I think.
