Redeemed himself in the OT, though. I was (along with commentators) fooled by that late 3rd sprawl, but replay showed it actually hit the post. Still, overall a good game by him; definitely see the potential in there, just needs to clean those flubs up.
It doesn't help that he has dmen who can't handle the puck properly or predictably, but those concentration lapses(or whatever they are)just won't fly.

Iowa making a comeback against MB. 3-3 in the 3rd. Shaw 2g, 1a, Rau 1g,1a, Staal 1a (hit bar on wide open net), Rossi 1a.
In general, not a very impressive showing.

Shaw scores with 30 seconds left, getting his first pro HT. Staal with another assist...he just looks so smart out there. Rossi playing well, but not dominating. Beckman...ok... Shaw can certainly play 4th line NHL. Small, but thick, and feisty.

One of my sleeper favorites, Chaffee, out due to covid protocols, after just coming back from an injury.

Beckman with the only goal for Iowa late in the 3rd. Snipe coming in on the off wing on a break. the man can shoot. Unfortunately, they are playing him on the L wall on the PP, with Rossi on the other side. Seems like they should have the shooter on the other side?

Lizotte takes a retaliation penalty with 38 seconds left in the O zone, while Iowa has the puck with the goalie pulled. Stupid, selfish stuff.

1-0 Iowa v Rockford. Goal by Rossi(one timer from slot) assisted by Rau and Addison. Beckman rang one off the post later in the period. They still have him playing with McLeod and Sucese. Makes no sense to me. Chaffee back, Khovanov not playing.

Wild being very undisciplined. Addison 5 min for fighting, and later on a misconduct for lipping off. Lots and lots of other silly penalties. Army needs to get them under control. Addison, Rossi( 2 penalties), and Shaw shouldn't be sitting in the box for extended time. Meanwhile big dudes like Ottenbreit are doing nothing but watching.

I am not crazy about the play of Iowa. PP is 1 for 23, Skilled players are taking fighting, misconduct, and other penalties while the big, untalented lugs look on, the breakout scheme is outdated. Sloppy, sloppy play...coaches are letting things get out of hand.

So the bad PP is a complete organizational problem... fantastic... :shakehead

Rossi and Addison with PP assists on Shaw's goal (tip on Rossi's slapper). Beckman keeps firing the puck, but would like to see a bit more versatility in his game. He might be an interesting player next year, though. JEE's brother was in the opposing team's net. He's pretty big.

IOwa 6-1 against JEE's not so little brother, who came on in relief.
Chaffee- 3g
Rossi - 1g, 2a (looking better and better. Very good puck handler and not a hesitant shooter. Between him, Boldy, Kap, Fiala...not enough pucks to go around! He is looking more and more comfortable with the puck battles and physical side of things, though not a BA like Shaw and Addison)
Addison - 3a (calm with the puck, a bit of a headcase down here. I think he's bored/frustrated with some of the clowns down here)
Shaw - 2a(he can play nhl 4th line. Small, but tough.)
Beckman - 2a(can pass, and mainly, shoot. Looks promising, but needs time.)
Khovanov - 1 a

I am visiting a buddy in Cincinnati this week and it just so happens the Heartlanders are in town. Anybody I should be watching particularly? Haven't followed this team too much but am excited to watch some hockey. Also it's dollar beer night :naughty:

I don't like what is going on down in Iowa. Beckman is separated from Rossi, for some reason. Players like Addison, Rau, and Shaw (who are some of the most skilled, smaller players)get double minors for roughing, misconducts, etc. while the 4th liners and big, untalented Dman stand around with their thumbs up their butts. This has happened multiple times this year. Undisciplined, unfocussed play, and there's seems to be confusion as to their roles. A guy like Addison has to be pulled aside and told that his road to the NHL is not to be a tough guy. Same with Shaw... it's fine to play hard, not fine to be in the box repeatedly, especially if you will NEVER be an enforcer type player in the NHL.

I am wondering about the coaching down there.

Delayed reply but from watching AHL Wild games… I have seen Rossi score a few of these types of goals now. How good is his shot? If Rossi’s best skill is his IQ and ability to be in the right place at the right time and make quick decisions… it would really unlock value from that skillset if his shot was a different maker.

To be fair guys like Rau and Shaw only ticket to the NHL is to have that physical edge to them. They are looking at maybe being the 12th FWD as an energy/checking/whatever line. It's hard for non-elite small FWDs to get into the NHL.

Going the JT Brown 4th line pest route gives them a better chance than trying to be the next Zucc or DeBrincat in the NHL.

It's one thing to have an edge. It's another thing to get fighting majors and misconducts, especially when you are 5'8" and 5'9" respectively(and that's being generous). Rau is a vg AHL player, but has proven that he can't make a dent in a NHL lineup. Shaw is a different case- much younger- and I thought he looked ok when he was called up. His claim to fame will be quickness, two way play, winning puck battles, and IQ- not being some hot headed fighter. Not saying that he is a sure thing to make the NHL, but what is happening with him, and others, down in the AHL team gives me pause. Addison will never be looked at to fight, or be anything but a skill guy(nothing wrong with a bit of jam), and he certainly should not be getting game misconducts for dissent- I think he's had two in the past couple of weeks.

They look frustrated, and confused about their roles. I put that down to coaching. Why is Beckman consistently put with Cody McLeod and Nate Sucese? McLeod is a 37 yo goon with hands of stone, and 5 pts. in 32 gp. Sucese is a 25 yo with 6 pts. in 31 gp this year, and will NEVER become a NHL'er. Army couldn't do a better job of burying Beckman if he tried.

His shot looks vg. Both wrist and one timer. Nice release, accuracy, and power. NHL average quality, at least.

Rossi with a nice goal. Snap shot from about 35' away. Nice release, just flat out beat the goalie. Addison, for those who might've been wondering, has a nice point slap shot. Reasonably fast and accurate, but the best thing is that he can get it off quickly, making it more difficult to block.

Hard slappers are nice and all but a well placed and timed shot is almost always better IMHO

2-0 in the 1st against GR. Chaffee assist by Rossi. Then McLeod from Beckman and Addison. Beckman had a very nice shift...before the setup on the goal he toe dragged on a 2 on 1 and had a nice rip that just missed...had the goalie beaten.

Chaffee...good speed, shot, size and a RHS. I think Beckman will end up the better player, but Chaffee is 3-4 years older, and thicker.

Rossi continues to look vg. Seems to be processing the game faster and faster. His decisions are vg, and always seems to have an escape plan.

now 2-1. Keaton Thompson inexplicably passed it in front from the corner with 20 seconds left. Khovanov surprised, got his pocket picked, then the puck was in the net. IMO, not on Khovanov....ill considered breakout pass, IMO.
Khovanov centering Beckman and McLeod.

3-1. Very nice wraparound goal by Addison. Assist by Chaffee. Both with two point nights.

Rossi with a clear break. Went 5 hole, Pickard closed it down. Nice pass by Shaw to set him free, and physical play by Mermis to create a turnover.

Absolutely horribad ending early in 3 v3 OT. Rossi wins draw back to Addison who goes behind net. Shaw goes behind net at speed and zigs when he should've zagged, totally wiping out Addison and himself, while the puck goes out to a man all alone out in front. Hammond makes 1st save, but can't make the next.
I don't know what Shaw was thinking. Addison got destroyed.

Rossi from Mermis and Shaw in 1st period. Nice deflection in front.

Rossi from Chaffee in 2nd. Nice one timer from 35' out- excellent keep in and set up by Chaffee.

One more period to go for Rossi to get a HT, but I suspect that they are going to call off the dogs. It's 5-1 already.

I really like that Rossi seems like he can score all these kinds of goals that come within the flow of play so to speak.

Ya, he scores with one time slappers, wrist shots, backhands, and deflections. Versatile. VG+ puck handler. Not as flashy or dominant as a guy like Kaprizov or Fiala, but has the knack of showing up on the scoresheet.

1-1 end of 2nd against Rockford.

Miller from Rossi and Linhart on a delayed penalty. Nice find by Rossi to Miller coming in from the point. Linhart has only had a few games, and he has 4 assists. He looks pretty good with the puck.

Now 2-1. MacIntyre looks good. 1 goal on 28 shots, and has an assist :walrus:

3-2 in SO. Cramarossa, Rossi, and Rau all skunked. They seem to be marginalizing Beckman, not having him on the SO, and playing on a grinder line(McLeod is a common linemate), while Shaw and Chaffee get better minutes. Makes no sense to me.

Khovanov now wants to be known as Sasha rather than Alex.
