Talbot isn’t just a throw in/cap dump. He may provide the Wild with cap relief if they decide to go with a cheaper option next season, but he’s been a decent goalie while here. He can be the starter for Chicago next year & be flipped too. He’s probably around a 3rd in value & McBain sounds like he’s worth at least a 2nd. 2nd + 3rd should be somewhat close for an expiring goalie with a NMC. It’s not like Chicago has any incentive to keep him if they can’t get a better offer than this.
I wouldn't trade a 2nd for McBain. A 3rd, sure but not a 2nd. You can still find high end talent in the 2nd round, it happens often enough.
He was drafted 63rd overall, which is a late 2nd now. With how often teams miss out on 2nd rounders, I think a 2nd round is probably around fair value for him. To be honest, I think his floor is a bottom 6 C & ceiling might be higher-end middle 6. Not sure where Chicago is at in their rebuild/retool, but he’s somebody that can jump in right away.
