Problem is we don't have any young and coming Defenseman. Foote looks is starting to develop well at least but Hedman and McD are getting to the wrong side of 30. Both could age well, but we do need some young blood on the back end. The team is getting old in general

A lot can change in 4-5 years. Wouldn't worry a bit about the "future." I'm eating crow about Foote lately. He's slow and there's absolutely no denying it but he's coming along. Doubt he's ever a #2. If he can become a steady #4 like cernak then awesome but I think we are a ways out there too. For the future;

Hedman - Cernak
McD - Foote

Is preferably our top 4 for the next few years. Plenty of time to develop for Foote and develop defenseman or acquire. Kind of pissing into the wind to make guesses but there is definitely one name I'm over seeing back there.

Me and @These Are The Days have been saying this for a while. Hes inconsistent, has little composure and takes so many idiotic penalties. Wouldn't mind him being shown the door. If he's the future replacement for Hedman and/McD then God help us.

We're rapidly approaching year 6 and he STILL does what he does. I wanted to see an improvement and a cut down in mistakes and though we can argue this might've been his best season defensively, he is what he is. This isn't going away. I know we're spoiled by the likes of Hedman and McDonagh but his constant mistakes make me believe otherwise he is fit to replace them.

At this point he's nice to have. I trust Cernak to grab the mantle in either McDonagh or Hedman's stead to lead a top 4 shutdown pairing.

If we keep him I want him chained to Hedman all of next year. You're not gonna justify his next contract so he can play sheltered 3rd pairing minutes while we hope and pray he wakes up one day and realizes he's Cale Makar

We have maybe 2 more good years left so who cares

Yes, lets get rid of defensemen, that will fix our problems.
Watch the games. At this point we’re better with an AHL guy playing 10 mins. How sad is that

Is it? The last couple games he’s been awful. At least a kid would 1. play hard 2. be ok playing 12 mins so we can load up MCD and HEDMAN

the last few games Sergy has been worse than our AHL d.
lets look at last night.
- goal #1 (tavares) - covered by serge, true, but that was a true deflection off of a purposeful deflection shot, and really nothing that could be done by the defense.
- goal #2 (reilly) - should have been covered by hedman/killorn. HORRID play by killer who was on the wrong side of the ice. oophf
- goal #3 (nylander) - really should have been better defended by bogo, since he had hedman backing him up, but i put this one on vasy. he needs to stop that one
- goal #4 (matthews) - golden boy McD coughs up the puck on center ice while skating on the wrong side of the ice and cernak and vasy do what they can but can't stop a well executed play for the GWG
BUT YEAH LETS GET RID OF SERGE REAL SPICY TAKE GUYS

i keep forgetting that most of you dont even watch the games for anything other than confirmation bias and you get that wrong, too

Serg also had two nice assists the two games before. His dumb penalty the other game (punch to the face with 4 refs close by) I didn’t like though.

It’s very up and down with this guy but he’s not terrible at all. Logs 21-23 minutes per game too. You don’t get to do that playing the same side as Heds and McD if you’re bad.

serge also gets the worst partner. and you can say he gets the easy minutes, but in an away game when they have the last change, you lose that benefit.

by my count, McD has cost us two games against the leafs. and i STILL love him. one of the best in the league at boardwork/puck retrieval. but he is not having a good series.

Serg also turns the puck over constantly and misses his breakout passes. It's not about the goals that went in last net. It's about his overall play during the game. His play was horrendous.

He's a good player that has bad Hockey IQ and seems to be in La La land all the time.

You can live with turnovers from an offensive defenseman (like Fox, De Angelo) but Sergy has zero offence to his game.

He has been terrible.

If you think MCD is worse than Sergy we have a problem. MCD is making plays all over the ice

i didn't stratify them, you did.

but it IS about the goals that go in. thats all that matters. and you don't even have any examples. just "HE SUCKS" *waves arms all around* so i guess i will just ignore you and let you post in bad faith ad nauseum

It’s a law of averages. Over time the more bad plays the more goals that will
Go in against.

Mcdonagh has been solid minus a few mistakes that unfortunately ended up in the back of our net.

Sergachev has been in la la land turning pucks over, missing his outlet passes, hesitating to shoot on the powerplay, shooting pucks at Cirelli’s face.

Is that enough examples? Or

He’s been so bad Cooper low key called him out and he’s rarely/never done that.

At the same time though, people probably agree sergachev has the better shot but McDonagh tied the game up. There are plenty of cases where he blindly zips passes around, ices it or coughs it up with very little pressure applied. If it happened rarely, we wouldn't have an issue. It's been happening regularly. I don't think we need to have time stamps to prove it, it's just a glaring issue. Not sure if the game is too fast for him this series or what, but he's been poor. Admittedly, our defense as a unit in the 3 losses has been poor. Team defense included.

Team defense included.
*taps nose* this is it. This is what I’m getting at. Everyone looks bad at defense. Including the forwards. And when the forwards look bad; the defenseman playing 20+ minutes a night look really bad. I’m just tired of reading the same boilerplate “serge sucks” posts when, objectively, he wasn’t even the issue for the past couple of games. So, no, I’m going to call posters out. Back up your shitty posts with some actual real facts.

The leafs are the deepest offense we’ve ever faced, and we’re at our shallowest in team defense. McD coughed the puck up, but no forwards covered for him. Cooper called cirelli off and put point on the ice and killorn Shit all over the ice for a 4-on-4 goal. The forwards need to be better. And the defenseman will look better when they have options.

And yeah if Paul could stop the Joseph imitation that would help too. We looked bad, let’s hope we can right the ship Thursday.

He’s definitely below both Cernak and Cirelli in terms of who is expendable this offseason. If JBB tries to extend them this Summer, I’d hope he offers Serg at most 6.25 aav(being generous), and if Serg wants more, JBB opens the bidding. There will be no shortage of interested teams, and Tampa can easily get a very good return for him.
